To create custom wall storage, start with the wall and the items you need to store, then choose a system: French cleats for rearrangeable holders, pegboard for hooks and project-specific attachments, or fixed shelving when the layout can stay put. Before building, plan how the system will attach to the wall—especially where its cleats or backing meet the studs—and do not assume a universal load rating.
Choose a wall-storage system that fits the job
Compare options by how often you expect to rearrange them, the size and weight of what you will store, the wall area and backing involved, the tools and skill available, and the appearance you want. Project guides show workable examples, not a controlled strength comparison, so choose by fit rather than an unsupported claim that one system is strongest.

French cleats
A French-cleat system uses paired angled pieces: one is mounted to the wall and compatible holders hook onto it. Wickes describes a plywood cleat layout whose dimensions can be adjusted to suit the space, with accessories such as shelves, boxes, hooks, and holders. If the wall surface is uneven, its guide suggests cladding the mounting area to create a straight surface. See Wickes’ French-cleat tool storage guide.
Pegboard
Pegboard suits layouts that use a hole pattern for hooks and other attachments. A Home Depot Canada example makes a panel from MDF with drilled holes, dowels, and shelf pieces; its project uses six-inch hole spacing and hangs the panel on a French cleat. Those are choices in that particular build, not standard dimensions for every pegboard project. See the Home Depot Canada pegboard-and-shelves project.

Fixed and modular shelves
If you do not expect to move the storage often, a fixed shelf layout may be simpler. For a closet, a modular plan can let you adjust component size and shelf count while keeping the overall system organized. The Home Depot’s guide covers wall-shelf construction, while Ana White’s modular closet plan illustrates adjustable components. Plan the layout around what you will store
- Measure usable wall space. Note the width and height available, then account for obstructions and the room needed to reach items and move attachments.
- List the items and their storage needs. Decide which need a shelf, hook, bin, or dedicated holder. Keep larger or heavier objects in mind when deciding where shelves and supports will go.
- Sketch the arrangement. Mark the approximate locations and sizes of shelves, hooks, and holders. Leave practical access between items instead of filling every part of the wall.
- Choose the system. Pick cleats if you want compatible holders that can be moved, pegboard if a hole pattern and hooks fit the contents, or fixed/modular shelves if the layout is likely to remain stable.
- Plan the wall attachment and surface. Identify studs and decide whether the design needs a backing panel or surface preparation before you build. The attachment method must suit the actual wall and intended load.
Build and mount with the wall in mind
For a French-cleat system
- Use the measured wall dimensions to set cleat lengths and holder sizes; the Wickes guide recommends plywood and allows dimensions to be adapted.
- Make the wall mounting area straight. For an uneven surface, Wickes suggests cladding the area before mounting the cleat.
- Locate studs and plan to fasten the wall cleat into them. Baird Brothers’ plan says to anchor the finished shelf to a stud, and Ana White’s closet plan calls for fastening its wall cleat to multiple studs. See the Baird Brothers French-cleat wall system plan.
- Build holders to engage the cleat securely and place them according to the layout. Confirm they sit properly before loading them.
For pegboard
- Choose the panel material, hole pattern, and accessories to suit your intended arrangement. A drilled MDF panel with dowels and shelves is one documented approach, not a required specification.
- Plan how the panel will be supported. The Home Depot Canada example mounts its pegboard using a French cleat; that mounting detail belongs to that project.
- Do not assume a panel or shelf is adequately supported just because it is attached to a wall. Lowe’s pegboard shelf project attaches the shelves to 3/4-inch plywood backing rather than directly to drywall. Follow a design’s attachment details for the actual wall and load. For fixed or modular shelves
- Set shelf heights and component sizes from the items you will store and the available wall area.
- Use the chosen plan’s specified construction and attachment approach, and locate studs where the plan calls for stud fastening.
- Before loading shelves, check that the assembly is firmly attached and that each component is seated as intended. The Home Depot wall-shelf guide includes construction and safety guidance.
What load can custom wall storage hold?
There is no universal safe load rating established for French-cleat walls, pegboard, or custom shelves. Capacity depends on the specific design, materials, wall, backing, fasteners, and installation, so do not transfer a project example’s number to a different build.

For context, Home Depot Canada’s undated pegboard project page, retrieved in 2026, claims 200 lb for its example French-cleat-mounted pegboard. That figure applies to the page’s example and setup only; it is not a rating for other panels, walls, or storage systems. The same project chose six-inch hole spacing, while Lowe’s undated pegboard shelf project specifies 3/4-inch plywood backing. These are project details, not general requirements. Use the plans and attachment details appropriate to your own wall and intended contents.
