The approach works in a compact courtyard as well as a larger garden. Start with the space and its growing conditions, then decide how formal or abundant you want the planting to feel.
What makes a garden feel Paris-inspired?
Begin with structure. A route through the garden, a focal point and repeated shapes make a small space feel composed rather than crowded. Formal French garden design uses balance, symmetry, straight lines and geometric forms; box edging is one traditional way to mark planting compartments. Roses, ground cover or seasonal planting can soften those edges. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes these formal-garden principles in its formal garden plants guide.
For an urban garden, restraint is useful: repeat a few forms and colours instead of collecting many unrelated pots and plants. The RHS notes that repeated patterns and minimal design can work well where a small garden must serve several purposes. Its garden style guide also distinguishes formal geometry from the profuse, scented planting associated with English cottage gardens. Those are different looks, but they can be combined: keep the path and edges orderly, then let selected flowers bring softness.
How to plan the garden around your site
1. Check light, drainage and exposure
Before choosing plants, note where sun and shade fall, whether you have open soil or paving, how quickly water drains, and how exposed the space is to wind and winter weather. These details matter more than a plant’s look in a photograph. For example, lavender is a poor choice for shade or wet, heavy soil; it needs a sunny position with well-drained soil. The RHS lavender growing guide sets out its preferences and limitations.

2. Set a route and focal point
Decide where you want the eye to land and how you will move through the space. A doorway, bench, urn, specimen plant or framed view can serve as the focal point. In a courtyard, align a few containers or planting areas with that route; even a simple axis gives the space intention.
3. Choose a level of formality you can maintain
Clipped edges and geometric planting create a more formal effect and need upkeep to retain their definition. A looser display of scented flowers spilling toward a path feels more romantic, but is closer to cottage-garden abundance than formal French geometry. Repeating a limited palette or using a consistent edge helps a relaxed planting scheme still feel coherent.

Which plants suit a romantic, structured garden?
Choose a small palette that fits your conditions, then repeat it. Lavender can contribute fragrance, grey-green foliage and summer flowers in a sunny, well-drained position. Where winter hardiness is a concern, English lavender cultivars are generally hardier than French lavender, which may need replacing more often. Roses bring a classic flowering accent and can also be trained on a wall or fence.
For vertical greenery, star jasmine offers evergreen foliage and fragrant flowers, subject to local climate and growing conditions. The RHS includes it among options for urban gardens in its urban garden plants guide. Box is a familiar formal-garden choice, but it is not essential: use it only if the site and the pruning it needs suit your plans. Formal compartments can also hold roses, ground cover or bedding.

How to make a courtyard or balcony feel larger
When paving leaves little room for beds, use height and group containers deliberately. Climbers can cover suitable walls or fences while preserving floor space. For a climber in a pot, choose the largest container that fits; a larger soil volume is more practical than a small pot for this purpose. Balconies and other exposed positions need plants suited to their wind and weather conditions. The RHS explains these small-space approaches in its guide to planting small garden spaces.
Rather than scattering many small pots, group a few generous containers. Larger pots dry out more slowly than small patio pots and are easier to manage, according to the RHS. Shelves, tiered displays and rail planters can add growing space, provided the plants can tolerate the conditions where they will sit. For a paved courtyard, a large outdoor planter can also provide a strong visual anchor; choose its size, drainage, material and weight to suit both the plant and the site.

How to keep the garden manageable
- Match each plant to the light, soil, drainage and exposure available rather than choosing by appearance alone.
- Repeat a few varieties and forms instead of building a long, mixed plant list.
- Use hardy shrubs or evergreens where you want lasting structure, and select formal edging only if you can provide the pruning it needs.
- Where bare soil is suitable for it, gravel or bark mulch can help reduce weeds and water loss. Gravel also appears in Mediterranean-style garden design, but it is not appropriate for every plant or soil.
The RHS covers these practical choices, including generous containers and simpler planting, in its low-maintenance garden guide. A well-planned garden can reduce avoidable work, but containers and plants still need care suited to their individual needs.
