Elmer’s publishes two ways to make paint crackle: a quick craft activity using White School Glue, and an antique-look method using Glue-All over a dried base coat. In both, acrylic paint goes over glue that is still wet; the cracks form as the layers dry. Choose the method based on the look and sequence you want, and allow the project to dry fully rather than relying on Elmer’s 10-minute activity estimate.
Choose the right method and surface
Elmer’s instructions describe two distinct methods, not interchangeable steps. The simple activity uses White School Glue on a paintable surface such as canvas or wood. The antique-look instructions use Glue-All over a dry acrylic base coat, then call for a final coat of Glue-All after the crackled paint dries.

Elmer’s general material guide describes Glue-All for paper, wood, fabric, leather, and ceramics, and White School Glue for paper, cloth, and crafts. Those broad material descriptions do not establish that every finished surface will be durable or suitable for heavy use.
Materials
- Elmer’s White School Glue for the simple activity, or Elmer’s Glue-All for the antique-look method.
- Acrylic craft paint. For the antique-look method, choose two contrasting colors so the base coat shows through the cracks.
- A paintbrush for applying the glue and paint.
- A paintable object, such as canvas or wood, for the simple activity.
Method 1: Simple crackle with White School Glue
- Choose a paintable surface, such as canvas or wood, and prepare acrylic paint and a brush.
- Brush on a generous layer of Elmer’s White School Glue.
- Let the glue sit for a few minutes, but do not let it dry.
- Brush acrylic paint over the still-wet glue.
- Leave the layers undisturbed until they dry and the crackle develops.
Elmer’s gives this activity an “Activity Time” estimate of 10 minutes; that is not a guaranteed total drying time. Its directions do not specify a fixed drying duration or a sealer for this version.

Method 2: Antique-look crackle with Glue-All
- Paint the object with acrylic craft paint to create the base color. Let that coat dry.
- Cover the dry base coat with Elmer’s Glue-All.
- While the Glue-All is still wet, brush on a different acrylic color for the topcoat.
- Let the layers dry fully so the crackle can develop.
- After the crackled layer has dried, apply another coat of Glue-All as directed in Elmer’s antique-look method.
Use a contrasting topcoat if you want the base color to be more visible through the cracks. The instructions do not give a precise drying time, so judge dryness by the surface rather than assuming the project is ready after a set number of minutes.
How to influence the crackle
Bob Vila’s general DIY guidance says a thinner layer of school glue tends to produce finer cracks, while a thicker layer tends to produce larger ones. Treat this as a general craft guideline, not a measured setting or a guarantee for Elmer’s products; the brand’s simple activity itself calls for a generous glue layer. A commercial crackle medium is another option if you prefer a purpose-made product.

Drying, sealing, and expectations
The effect develops as glue and paint begin to dry, but Elmer’s published instructions do not state a fixed total drying time. Allow the full layers to dry before handling or applying the final Glue-All coat in the antique-look method. Only that method specifies a final coat; the simple activity does not.
Neither set of directions establishes that the finished surface is waterproof, furniture-grade, or suitable for frequent handling. Use the technique for a decorative finish, and do not assume the final Glue-All coat makes the object suitable for heavy-use surfaces.
