You cannot convert square feet to linear feet without knowing the material’s usable width. If the width is in inches, use Linear feet = (square feet × 12) ÷ width in inches. If the width is in feet, use Linear feet = square feet ÷ width in feet.
For example, 300 square feet of 6-inch-wide material requires (300 × 12) ÷ 6 = 600 linear feet before waste, packaging, or layout adjustments.

Square feet versus linear feet
Square feet measure area: length multiplied by width. Linear feet measure length only. A linear foot covers different amounts of area depending on the material’s width, so there is no single square-feet-to-linear-feet conversion.
| Material width | Area covered by 1 linear foot |
|---|---|
| 3 inches | 0.25 square feet |
| 4 inches | 0.333 square feet |
| 6 inches | 0.5 square feet |
| 12 inches | 1 square foot |
| 24 inches | 2 square feet |
A 12-inch-wide material covers one square foot per linear foot. A 6-inch-wide board covers only half a square foot per linear foot.

The square-feet-to-linear-feet formulas
When width is measured in inches
Linear feet = (Square feet × 12) ÷ usable width in inches
The factor of 12 converts the width from inches to feet. This is the formula commonly used in flooring and lumber calculators, including POWERNAIL’s flooring tools and Linear Feet Calculator.
When width is measured in feet
Linear feet = Square feet ÷ usable width in feet
For the reverse calculation:
Square feet = Linear feet × usable width in feet
How to use an online calculator
- Calculate the total area. For a rectangle, multiply length by width in feet. For an L-shaped or irregular space, divide it into rectangles, calculate each area, and add the results.
- Find the material’s usable coverage width. Check the manufacturer’s specification, product label, supplier quote, or the exposed face of the material.
- Select the correct width unit. Enter inches if the calculator asks for inches. If it asks for feet, divide the inch measurement by 12.
- Enter the square-foot total.
- Add waste once. Use the calculator’s waste field, or multiply the raw result by
1 + (waste percentage ÷ 100). - Round up to the selling unit. That may be a whole linear foot, board, roll, bundle, or box.
- Check product coverage. Box coverage, roll width, overlap, installation direction, and package size may change the amount you actually order.
Online calculators use different labels and controls, so confirm whether the displayed result is theoretical coverage or a waste-adjusted purchase quantity. Tools such as the Farnsworth Lumber calculators and FigureCalc commonly ask for area, width, and waste information.

5-inch flooring planks
For 240 square feet of flooring with a usable width of 5 inches:
(240 × 12) ÷ 5 = 576 linear feet
With 10% waste:
576 × 1.10 = 633.6 linear feet
Order at least 634 linear feet if the material is sold by the foot, or calculate the number of complete boxes from the box coverage and round up to a whole box.

5.5-inch deck boards
For 350 square feet using boards with an actual coverage width of 5.5 inches:
(350 × 12) ÷ 5.5 = 763.64 linear feet
With 12% waste:
763.64 × 1.12 = 855.27 linear feet
If boards are sold in 12-foot lengths:
855.27 ÷ 12 = 71.27 boards
Round up to 72 boards, then confirm that the available lengths and the deck layout support that quantity.
12-foot-wide carpet
For 360 square feet of carpet from a 12-foot-wide roll:
360 ÷ 12 = 30 linear feet
This is a theoretical result. Carpet is constrained by roll width, room orientation, seams, pattern matching, and offcuts. Twelve feet is common, but roll widths vary; verify the actual product and have the cut plan checked by the supplier or installer. See the Square Feet Calculator carpet guidance and Flooring Clarity’s carpet conversion explanation.
Use usable width, not automatically the nominal width
A product’s advertised or nominal dimension may not equal its coverage width. A nominal 2×6 board, for example, may have a smaller actual milled width; verify the specific product rather than assuming the nominal number.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For tongue-and-groove flooring, the tongue may enter the neighboring groove, reducing the exposed coverage width. Siding and shiplap may overlap. Deck boards may have gaps, and interlocking products may have an effective coverage dimension different from their overall width. Use the manufacturer’s finished face, coverage, or usable width. Farnsworth Lumber notes that overlap can affect siding and flooring calculations.
How much waste should you add?
Waste is a planning allowance, not a universal rule. It accounts for end cuts, defects, damaged pieces, unusable remnants, installation direction, and layout efficiency.
- Simple rectangular layouts: approximately 5%–10% may be a useful starting range.
- Typical plank flooring or decking: approximately 10% is commonly used as a planning starting point.
- Diagonal, herringbone, highly irregular, or complex layouts: often 10%–15% or more may be needed.
- Patterned carpet or seamed materials: calculate the allowance from the actual cut plan rather than applying a fixed percentage.
Follow the product instructions and installer’s recommendation where available. Do not add waste twice: if the calculator already includes 10%, do not multiply the result by another 1.10.

Baseboard, crown molding, and other trim
Trim is normally measured by perimeter or by the length of individual runs. If a room needs 68 linear feet of baseboard, its floor area should not be converted using the trim’s width. Measure the walls, subtract openings where appropriate, and allow for cuts and corners.
Board feet
Board feet measure volume and include thickness, width, and length. They are not interchangeable with square feet or linear feet. Use a board-foot calculation when the supplier quotes lumber that way; see this board-foot guide for the different measurement method.
Carpet and sheet goods
Area divided by roll width gives a theoretical linear length. Fixed roll widths and seam requirements can make the actual order larger.

Siding and shiplap
Use the exposed coverage width after overlap, not the full physical board width. Product-specific coverage data is essential.

Troubleshooting an incorrect result
- The result is far too small: check whether an inch measurement was entered as feet. A 5-inch width is 0.4167 feet, not 5 feet.
- The result is 12 times wrong: if width is in inches, make sure the formula includes
× 12. - The result changes unexpectedly: check whether waste is already included and whether the calculator rounds automatically.
- The quantity seems excessive: confirm that you used usable coverage width rather than a physical or nominal dimension, and that the area was not entered twice.
- The room is irregular: calculate separate rectangles rather than using a bounding rectangle that includes space outside the room.
- The material is sold in packages: divide the required coverage by the package coverage and round up to a whole package.
Perform a reverse check
To catch unit errors, multiply the raw linear-foot result by the material width expressed in feet:
Calculated linear feet × width in feet = original square feet
For 576 linear feet of 5-inch material, the check is:

Calculator logic
if width_unit == "inches":
width_feet = width_inches / 12
else:
width_feet = width_entered
raw_linear_feet = square_feet / width_feet
adjusted_linear_feet = raw_linear_feet * (1 + waste_percent / 100)
A reliable calculator should reject blank, zero, or negative values; identify mixed units; make waste optional; and show raw coverage separately from the adjusted purchase quantity. Keep the full precision during calculation and round up only the final order quantity.
