You can convert some mini and bench lathes to CNC, but there is no universal kit: fit depends on the exact lathe, its screw and mounting geometry, and the kit’s electrical and control components. Before ordering, identify the machine’s manufacturer, model and configuration, then check what the kit replaces, what it reuses, and what you must supply. A 7×12 label alone is not enough to confirm compatibility.

Start by checking whether a kit fits your lathe

Write down the lathe’s manufacturer, model, revision if known, and any nonstandard changes. Compare that information with the kit maker’s compatibility statement and installation documentation. Machines with similar nominal sizes can differ in mounting points and leadscrew geometry, so do not assume that a kit for one mini lathe fits another.

Before buying, measure the mounting points, screw-end diameters, bearing spacing, available axis travel, and clearance around the carriage and cross-slide. Check whether motor mounts and couplers can fit without interfering with handwheels, guards, the chuck, or the work. A kit may require drilling, tapping, or other machine-specific work.

  • Confirm the exact base-machine model and configuration the kit is intended for.
  • Find out whether the design motorizes the existing leadscrews or replaces one or both of them.
  • Check what machining, new mounting holes, or other modifications installation requires.
  • Verify that the converted axes retain the travel and clearances you need.
  • Ask the supplier about documentation and replacement parts if fit or serviceability is unclear.

If you cannot verify the fit from the kit documentation or supplier, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than inferring it from the lathe’s nominal size.

Understand what the conversion changes

A typical two-axis lathe conversion adds powered movement to the Z axis, which moves the carriage along the bed, and the X axis, which moves the cross-slide toward or away from the spindle centerline. Stepper motors turn the axes under controller commands; the kit’s mounts, couplers, screws and nuts determine how that motion reaches the machine.

There is no single mechanical recipe. An older mini-lathe conversion design uses direct motor mounts and flexible couplers on the existing X and Z axes. Sherline’s documented conversion instead supplies a new Z-axis leadscrew and reuses the cross-slide screw; Sherline says converting an existing lathe involves drilling and tapping mounting holes. A Myford Super 7 listing includes ballscrews on both axes. These are examples of different product designs, not interchangeable instructions.

Some conversions replace Acme screws with ballscrews and anti-backlash nuts; others reuse a screw. The correct choice depends on the machine and kit. Do not buy replacement screws or nuts until you have confirmed the required geometry and what the conversion already supplies.

Compare kit scope before comparing prices

“CNC conversion kit” can mean mechanical parts only or a broader package with motors and controls. Read the bill of materials and exclusions so you know what remains to be sourced and integrated.

21Pcs Indexable Lathe Turning Tool Kit,3/8" 10mm Shank and Carbide Inserts
  • Seven Holders, Four Machining Jobs — External turning, chamfering, grooving and parting, 60° threading on both the outside and the inside, plus boring are covered by seven indexable holders: SCLCR1010H06, SDJCR1010H07, SDNCN1010H07, SER1010H11, SNR0010K11, MGEHR1010-2, and S10K-SCLCR06.
  • Sized for Small and Bench Lathes — A 10mm square shank is the practical middle ground between 8mm micro tooling and heavier 12mm bars. It suits 7x10 to 8x14 bench lathes and metric quick-change tool posts, and keeps cutting forces light for hobby-scale workpieces.
  • External and Internal Threading in One Box — A matched 60° pair handles both sides of threading jobs: SER for external threads, SNR for internal threads. Internal threading bars are the piece most kits at this price leave out, so repair and one-off work stays in-house.
  • 10mm Shank for Metric Tool Posts — The 10mm (0.394") square shank is built for 10mm tool posts and metric quick-change holders, including most QC posts with interchangeable shims. It is not a drop-in for a standard 3/8" (0.375") English opening, so verify your post size before ordering. Boring bars additionally need a workpiece bore large enough for bar plus insert.
  • Fourteen CVD-Coated Inserts = Two per Holder — Worn edge becomes a quick index or swap instead of a reorder, and a matching wrench ships with every holder so the swap needs no extra tools. The CVD-applied titanium-nitride (TiN) coating adds a wear-resistant layer over the carbide body. Positive-rake geometry targets the metals a home shop actually cuts — 6061 aluminum, 360 brass, 12L14, and low-ca

Older mini-lathe conversion guide Direct motor mounts and flexible couplers for X and Z; describes a screw-replacement approach using ballscrews and anti-backlash nuts. Describes connecting motors to their drives; a spindle indexer is suggested for CNC threading. The guide warns that nominally similar machines can vary. Confirm the exact geometry and instructions for your lathe.
Sherline CNC conversion kit Motor mounts for both axes; new Z-axis leadscrew; reuses the cross-slide screw. Conversion of an existing lathe may require drilling and tapping. Includes two standard motors, a four-axis driver box with power supply and cables, and Linux/EMC control software. The user supplies a computer. These details describe Sherline’s kit, not the contents or fit of another brand’s kit.
Myford Super 7 basic kit listing Includes ballscrews for both axes. Excludes motor controllers, computer, CAD/CAM software and emergency stop. The listing says a spindle speed sensor is needed for screw-cutting and excludes the sensor. Confirm the exact Myford configuration and controller support; the listing does not establish compatibility with other mini lathes.
MicroKinetics 12×36 and 13×40 listings Lists complete kits and separate mechanical-only kits. Complete kits are listed with motors, ballscrews, drivers, controller, software, limit switches, cabling and manuals. These are larger bench-lathe examples, not evidence of mini-lathe compatibility.

For any product, check whether the quoted package includes the mounts, couplers, screws or ballscrews, nuts, motors, drivers, power supply, controller, cables, home or limit switches, control software, and manuals. CAM software—the toolpath-generation stage—may be separate from machine-control software. A computer may also be required but not included.

Match motors and controls to the machine

Before selecting components separately, inventory the kit’s included parts and exclusions. A typical system may need stepper motors, compatible mounts and couplers, motor drivers, a suitably rated power supply, a motion controller, cabling, a computer, and CNC control software. Match motor current, shaft, mounting pattern and coupling to the driver and machine documentation; torque alone does not establish compatibility.

Sherline specifies NEMA 23 motors for its CNC-ready equipment. Its standard motor is listed at 0.775 N·m holding torque and 2.0 A per phase; its high-torque version is listed at 1.35 N·m and 2.0 A per phase. Sherline says the high-torque motor requires its updated coupling. These are Sherline product specifications, not a universal motor-sizing rule or a measure of conversion accuracy.

Plan for threading separately

CNC threading needs more than X and Z motor movement: the controller must coordinate tool motion with spindle rotation using compatible spindle sensing. Check the exact kit’s documentation for the sensor or indexer, its wiring, and supported controller functions. Do not assume a spindle sensor is included. For example, the Myford Super 7 basic kit listing says a spindle speed sensor is needed for screw-cutting but excludes it; an older mini-lathe guide suggests a spindle indexer for CNC threading.

Prepare the mechanics before installation

Follow the conversion kit’s instructions for the exact lathe. Before fitting motors, inspect the carriage and cross-slide for smooth movement, adjust the gibs as directed by the machine manual, and check that the screws and supports are aligned. A leadscrew support should limit unwanted movement without making the screw bind. Do not use a generic adjustment as a substitute for the lathe and kit manuals.

Keep notes and label removed parts as you work. If the kit calls for drilling, tapping, or machining, confirm the locations and procedure in its documentation before altering the machine. Installation steps from one conversion—such as removing gears or handwheels and fitting a particular coupler—may not apply to another.

Install and commission in controlled stages

  1. Review the kit instructions and bill of materials. Identify which parts attach to each axis, which screws are retained or replaced, and what electrical components and software must be supplied separately.
  2. Fit the mechanical parts as specified. Use the kit’s procedure for mounts, screws, couplers and any required drilling or tapping. Check alignment and free movement before connecting or energizing motors.
  3. Connect the control system according to its documentation. Verify motor-to-driver wiring, power requirements, controller connections and software configuration against the exact component manuals.
  4. Test movement with the spindle off. At low feed, command each axis through a small movement. Confirm that the displayed direction matches the actual direction and that movement is smooth.
  5. Check travel, homing and stopping behavior. Verify that each axis homes and stops correctly, and that commanded travel cannot drive the tool into the chuck or work. Test any switches and emergency-stop arrangement before cutting.
  6. Make a cautious first cut only after checks pass. Follow the machine and kit manuals, use appropriate guarding and eye protection, and stop if motion, stopping behavior or safety is uncertain.

The mini-lathe conversion guide recommends an emergency stop that cuts spindle power rather than only stopping controller commands. Treat the emergency-stop design and wiring as a safety-critical part of the installation, and follow the machine and control-system instructions.

Know what a kit listing does not establish

A kit’s parts list can establish what that supplier says is included; it does not by itself establish a particular conversion’s accuracy, success rate, typical cost, or suitability for every machine carrying the same size label. The cited product specifications and kit examples do not provide independent conversion-performance results. Base the decision on verified fit, scope, installation requirements, control compatibility and the work you need the lathe to perform.
