Yes—you can usually control a soundbar with a TV remote by connecting the soundbar to the TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port and enabling HDMI-CEC on both devices. This commonly provides volume and mute control and may synchronize power. The exact functions depend on the TV, soundbar, remote, connection type, model compatibility, and software version.
For the most reliable setup, connect the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s HDMI port labeled HDMI OUT, TV ARC, or eARC. Then select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output and turn on the brand-specific HDMI-CEC setting. The instructions below cover Samsung, LG, Sony, TCL, VIZIO, Roku TV, Hisense, and Panasonic.

How TV-remote soundbar control works
Two HDMI features are involved, and they do different jobs:
- HDMI ARC or eARC sends audio from the TV to the soundbar through the HDMI cable.
- HDMI-CEC sends control commands between compatible devices. It is what can let the TV remote adjust the soundbar’s volume, mute it, and sometimes turn it on or off with the TV.
ARC/eARC and CEC often work through the same HDMI connection, but they are not the same feature. A TV can sometimes send sound through ARC while the control connection is disabled or incompatible. In that situation, you may hear audio but the TV remote will not operate the soundbar.

CEC has different names by manufacturer: Samsung calls it Anynet+, LG calls it SIMPLINK, Sony calls it BRAVIA Sync or Control for HDMI, and Panasonic calls it VIERA Link or HDAVI Control. Menu names can change with the TV model, operating system, and software version, so search the settings for “CEC,” “ARC,” or “external audio” if the listed path does not match your screen.
Recommended setup: HDMI ARC or eARC
- Find the HDMI port on the TV marked ARC or eARC. A standard HDMI input is not the correct port for the TV’s audio-return connection.
- Find the soundbar’s HDMI port marked HDMI OUT, TV ARC, ARC, or eARC.
- Connect those two ports with an appropriate HDMI cable.
- Turn on the TV and soundbar.
- Set the TV’s sound output to the connected soundbar, external audio system, HDMI ARC device, or equivalent option.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV and the corresponding control feature on the soundbar.
- Set the soundbar to its ARC, TV ARC, or HDMI ARC input if it does not switch automatically.
- Press the TV remote’s volume-up, volume-down, and mute buttons. Then test whether the soundbar powers on and off with the TV.
When the connection works, the TV may display a volume indicator while the soundbar changes level. Some combinations show the soundbar’s own volume display instead. Neither behavior alone proves that every remote function is supported.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSamsung TV: use Anynet+
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV ARC port to the Samsung TV’s HDMI ARC or eARC port.
- On the TV, open Settings > Sound > Sound Output.
- Select the Samsung soundbar or connected audio device.
- If needed, open Settings > Connection > External Device Manager > Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) and turn Anynet+ on. The path can vary by Samsung model and software version.
- Put the soundbar in D.IN or TV ARC mode if it does not select ARC automatically.
- Use the Samsung remote to test volume, mute, and power.
Samsung says compatible Samsung TV remotes can control soundbar volume and mute, and compatible setups may synchronize power. For Samsung’s connection-specific instructions, see Samsung’s soundbar and TV support guidance.
Samsung optical alternative
For a Samsung TV and compatible soundbar without ARC, connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input, select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output, and set the soundbar to D.IN. Samsung also documents Auto Power Link for optical connections when power synchronization is desired. Optical volume and mute behavior is model-dependent; it does not carry HDMI-CEC commands.
LG TV: use SIMPLINK
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI ARC/eARC output to the LG TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port.
- Set the soundbar’s input to ARC, eARC, or HDMI ARC.
- On the TV, open Settings > Sound > Sound Out.
- Select the HDMI ARC connection device or the equivalent external-speaker option.
- Turn on SIMPLINK, LG’s name for HDMI-CEC. Depending on the webOS version, it may be under connection, general, or device settings.
- Test the LG remote’s volume and mute buttons, followed by power.
Some newer LG menus use wording such as Use Wired Speaker > HDMI (ARC) Device. If your path differs, look for Sound Out, HDMI ARC, and SIMPLINK rather than expecting an identical menu on every LG television. LG describes the ARC connection and SIMPLINK behavior in its ARC soundbar instructions and its external sound-system troubleshooting guide.

Sony TV: use BRAVIA Sync and Control for HDMI
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI OUT ARC/eARC port to the Sony TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC input.
- Choose the soundbar or audio system as the TV’s audio output.
- Enable BRAVIA Sync or the TV’s HDMI-CEC setting.
- On the soundbar, enable Control for HDMI.
- If the devices do not discover each other, power-cycle the TV and soundbar, then test the Sony remote again.
Sony states for the applicable soundbar models that TV-remote operation requires an HDMI connection with Control for HDMI enabled. Supported functions can include volume and coordinated power, but the available functions depend on the particular products and operating system. Sony’s Control for HDMI support article also notes that non-BRAVIA televisions use the television manufacturer’s own HDMI-CEC setting.

If sound is present but the Sony remote does not control the bar, confirm that the soundbar is on the correct HDMI input and that the TV has selected the external audio system. For the Sony models covered by that support article, optical does not provide the same TV-remote control function.
TCL TV: enable HDMI-CEC
- Connect the soundbar to the TCL TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port and connect the other end to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT ARC port.
- Enable HDMI-CEC in the TCL TV’s settings. The label and location vary by TCL platform and model.
- Set the TV’s audio output to the connected soundbar or ARC audio device.
- Confirm that the soundbar is using its ARC input.
- Test volume, mute, and power with the TCL remote.
TCL notes that not every HDMI cable supports ARC or CEC and that different soundbar models may offer different functions. If the remote fails, check both ARC-labeled ports before replacing the cable. TCL’s remote troubleshooting guidance explains why volume and power control can vary between compatible combinations.
VIZIO TV: enable CEC and ARC
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI ARC output to the VIZIO TV’s HDMI ARC port.
- Enable CEC in the TV’s system, device-control, or connected-devices settings.
- Enable ARC if it appears as a separate setting.
- Set the TV’s audio output to the external audio system or ARC device.
- Put the soundbar on its HDMI ARC input.
- Test volume and mute with the VIZIO remote, then check power synchronization.
VIZIO soundbar documentation identifies HDMI ARC and HDMI-CEC as the relevant features for using the TV remote to control volume. Exact settings differ across VIZIO TV generations and software. If volume works but power does not, the TV and soundbar may support only partial CEC functionality; recheck the ports, input, CEC setting, and cable before concluding that the remote is defective. Consult the VIZIO soundbar manual for the exact model.
Roku TV: use CEC or a Roku TV Ready soundbar
- Connect the soundbar to the Roku TV’s HDMI ARC port.
- Open Settings > System > Control other devices (CEC) and enable the relevant audio-control option. Wording varies by Roku TV model.
- Select the soundbar or external audio device as the TV’s audio output if Roku prompts you to do so.
- If the soundbar is Roku TV Ready, complete the on-screen setup and update the soundbar software if an update is offered.
- Use the Roku remote’s volume and mute controls.
A Roku TV Ready soundbar can expose additional controls such as sound modes through the Roku TV interface, but not every Roku remote directly controls every soundbar. A Roku player remote is also not automatically a universal soundbar remote. Roku recommends checking ARC, enabling CEC, and reconnecting the ARC cable when communication fails. See Roku’s guidance on remote control of soundbars, TV controls, and Roku TV Ready soundbar troubleshooting.

Hisense TV: enable CEC and ARC
- Connect the soundbar’s HDMI OUT ARC port to the Hisense TV’s HDMI ARC port.
- Open the TV’s system or device settings and enable CEC Function, or the equivalent HDMI-CEC control setting.
- Select the ARC or external-audio output option. Some Hisense models show an option such as TV Speaker & ARC.
- Set the soundbar to HDMI ARC.
- Test volume and mute with the Hisense remote.
Hisense manuals show CEC and TV Speaker/ARC as part of the setup, but Hisense menu names vary considerably by model year. If the exact path is different, search the TV settings for CEC, ARC, or external audio. Hisense describes the relevant settings in its soundbar manual.
Panasonic TV: use VIERA Link or HDAVI Control
- Connect the soundbar to the Panasonic TV’s HDMI ARC port.
- Enable VIERA Link or HDAVI Control in the TV’s settings.
- Set the TV’s audio output to the connected audio system if it does not switch automatically.
- Confirm that the soundbar is set to its ARC input.
- Use the Panasonic remote’s volume controls and test mute and power if supported.
Panasonic documentation says that compatible televisions and home-audio equipment using VIERA Link/HDAVI Control or HDMI-CEC can allow the TV remote to adjust the audio system’s volume over HDMI ARC. Compatibility still depends on the exact TV and soundbar models. Panasonic’s VIERA Link support documentation provides model-specific details.
Optical cable: the fallback when ARC is unavailable
Use optical when the TV or soundbar lacks ARC, when the HDMI-CEC connection is unreliable, or when an existing optical setup is the only compatible option.
- Connect the TV’s optical audio output to the soundbar’s optical input.
- Select Optical, D.IN, or the equivalent input on the soundbar.
- In the TV’s sound settings, choose optical, digital audio out, external speakers, or the equivalent option.
- Test volume and mute with the TV remote.
You may need a digital optical audio cable for TV and soundbar if ARC is not available. Optical carries audio, not HDMI-CEC commands. Some manufacturer combinations can still pass volume or mute commands through infrared or proprietary remote-learning features, and Samsung documents compatible optical volume/mute control. Other combinations do not; Sony specifically limits the applicable TV-remote function to HDMI. Treat optical remote control as model-dependent rather than guaranteed.

Troubleshooting TV-remote soundbar control
The TV remote changes the TV speakers’ volume instead
- Open the TV’s sound settings and select the soundbar, external audio system, or HDMI ARC device instead of TV Speakers.
- Check both ends of the HDMI cable. The TV end must be in the ARC/eARC port, and the soundbar end must be in the HDMI OUT/TV ARC/eARC port.
- Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV and the matching setting on the soundbar.
- Set the soundbar to ARC/TV ARC rather than Bluetooth, optical, or another input.
- Power-cycle both devices and test again.
If the TV is still set to its internal speakers, the TV remote may only be changing the TV’s own volume even though the HDMI cable is connected.
The soundbar plays audio, but there is no soundbar volume indicator or remote response
This usually means the audio path is working while the control path is not. Re-enable CEC, turn both devices off, disconnect and reconnect the ARC cable, and power the devices back on. Roku specifically recommends reconnecting the ARC cable and power-cycling the TV and soundbar when HDMI communication breaks down.

Volume works, but power synchronization does not
Power control is not guaranteed for every TV/soundbar pair. Confirm the soundbar’s CEC, Control for HDMI, Anynet+, SIMPLINK, or equivalent setting. Then power-cycle both devices. With optical, check whether the soundbar offers a feature such as Samsung’s Auto Power Link; optical itself does not provide the HDMI-CEC control channel.
There is no sound after switching to ARC
- Confirm that the soundbar is on ARC or TV ARC.
- Confirm that the TV’s audio output is set to HDMI ARC or the external audio system.
- Check that both devices use their ARC/eARC-labeled ports.
- Try another suitable HDMI cable if the current one is damaged or does not support the required ARC/CEC communication.
- Temporarily change the TV’s digital audio format to PCM or Stereo, if that option is available. This is a compatibility test; it may disable some advanced surround formats.
If PCM or Stereo restores sound, the problem may be an audio-format compatibility issue rather than the remote. LG and Roku both recommend basic stereo/PCM testing in relevant no-audio situations.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The remote still does nothing
Check the exact TV and soundbar models in their manuals. Some remotes control only volume and mute, some also control power, and some require a TV Ready or brand-specific soundbar. Do not assume that a TV remote can switch every soundbar input, change every sound mode, or open the soundbar’s full menu.
If the remote uses infrared, make sure the TV’s IR receiver and the soundbar’s receiver are not covered by furniture, a soundbar grille, decorations, or a cabinet edge. Roku identifies a blocked IR receiver as a possible cause of control failure. If you need a replacement for a lost or defective original, look for a replacement remote for your exact TV or soundbar model and verify the model number before purchasing.
When HDMI-CEC is incompatible or only provides partial control, a universal remote for TV and soundbar may be a practical fallback. Check its compatibility list and confirm that it supports both the television and the soundbar; it is not a substitute for correctly configuring ARC.
An IR obstruction is the unusual problem
If the setup relies on infrared and the soundbar is inside a cabinet or positioned where the remote signal cannot reach it, an IR repeater for TV remote may help. This is not a first-line fix for an HDMI-CEC problem: first use ARC/eARC, enable CEC, and confirm that the devices are compatible.
What the TV remote may—and may not—control
| Function | Typical result | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Volume up/down | Common over compatible HDMI ARC/CEC setups | Some optical and infrared combinations support it; others do not |
| Mute | Common, but model-dependent | It may work even when power or input switching does not |
| Power synchronization | Often available over compatible CEC connections | Not guaranteed across brands and models |
| Input switching | Sometimes available | Many TV remotes do not control every soundbar input |
| Sound modes and detailed settings | More likely with TV Ready or brand-specific products | Usually requires the soundbar remote or its own app unless explicitly supported |
Bluetooth should not be treated as a universal solution for TV-remote soundbar control. Bluetooth may carry audio, but it does not create the same predictable TV-to-soundbar control path as HDMI-CEC, and support varies by equipment.
When to check the manuals
Use the generic steps above first, then check both manuals if any of these conditions apply:

- The TV has no ARC/eARC port.
- The soundbar has HDMI but no HDMI OUT/ARC/eARC port.
- Only some remote buttons work.
- The TV and soundbar are different brands and power synchronization is important.
- The soundbar is an older model, a Bluetooth-only model, or a model designed for a specific TV platform.
- The TV’s software has different audio-output or CEC labels than the paths above.
The model manuals are the final authority for supported functions. Manufacturer compatibility statements commonly say “compatible,” “supported,” or “applicable models” because HDMI-CEC behavior is not identical across every device.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I control a soundbar with a TV remote over an optical cable?
Sometimes. Optical carries the TV’s audio, but it does not carry HDMI-CEC commands. Certain TV and soundbar combinations support volume or mute through infrared or manufacturer-specific features, while others require the soundbar remote. HDMI ARC/eARC is the better first choice when both devices support it.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does my soundbar have sound but the TV remote cannot change its volume?
The audio connection is working, but the control connection may not be. Select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output, verify that both ends of the HDMI cable use ARC/eARC ports, enable HDMI-CEC on both devices, and set the soundbar to ARC/TV ARC mode.
Do I need an HDMI ARC cable specifically?
You need a suitable HDMI cable connecting the TV’s ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/ARC/eARC port. If a cable is damaged or does not support the required ARC/CEC communication, replacing it may help, but it cannot fix an incompatible TV and soundbar.
Will every TV remote control soundbar power, inputs, and sound modes?
No. Compatible setups commonly provide volume and mute, and many also synchronize power. Input switching, sound modes, and detailed menu control vary by model and may require the soundbar’s original remote, a compatible replacement, or a universal remote.
The Bottom Line
For the best chance of one-remote control, use HDMI ARC or eARC—not a regular HDMI input—select the soundbar as the TV’s audio output, and enable the correct HDMI-CEC feature on both devices. Optical is a useful fallback, but its TV-remote control functions are model-dependent. If volume works but power or sound modes do not, the devices may simply support partial control rather than indicating a defective remote.
