1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo connect passive speakers to a receiver or amplifier, switch off and unplug the equipment, match positive to positive and negative to negative at both ends, secure the conductors in compatible terminals, and check for stray wire strands before restoring power. Terminal layouts and speaker-impedance requirements vary by model, so follow the manuals for both devices.
What you need before connecting speaker wire
- Speaker wire long enough to reach between the amplifier or receiver and the speaker.
- A wire stripper if you are preparing bare-wire ends.
- Optional banana plugs or pin connectors, only if the terminals on your equipment support them.
- The manuals for your receiver or amplifier and speakers, to confirm terminal instructions and impedance requirements.
There is no single connector or wire gauge that suits every system. Choose based on the terminals on both devices, the cable route and length, and the receiver’s model-specific requirements.
How to connect speaker wire, step by step
-
Switch off and unplug the equipment
Turn off the receiver or amplifier and disconnect it from the AC outlet before wiring. Yamaha’s receiver instructions also direct users to disconnect speakers and the subwoofer from the outlet before making connections; Crutchfield advises completing speaker connections before plugging the receiver in. See Yamaha’s receiver manual and Crutchfield’s receiver setup guide.
-
Identify the positive and negative conductors
Speaker wire has two conductors. One may be marked with a stripe, ridge, printed text, or a different color. Choose one identifiable side as positive and use it consistently. The usual terminal convention in the cited instructions is red for positive (+) and black for negative (−). Check the wire and terminal markings rather than relying on memory; see Klipsch’s speaker-wire instructions and Crutchfield’s speaker-wire guide.

Amazon Basics 16-Gauge Speaker Wire Cable, Polarity Marked, 100 ft, Bronze- IN THE BOX: 16 gauge speaker wire cable (100 feet)
- CLEAR AUDIO: Plastic jacket helps ensure high-quality undistorted signals to and from audio equipment
- CONVENIENT: Connects audio speakers to an A/V receiver or amplifier
- SIMPLE INSTALL: Black line on one side of wire indicates the polarity for a proper audio system set up
- EASY DISPENSING: Comes wrapped around a hard plastic spool for simple dispensing
-
Prepare the bare-wire ends, if needed
For the bare-wire method, Yamaha and Klipsch specify stripping about 3/8 inch (10 mm) of insulation and twisting the exposed strands together. Follow the instructions for your terminals, as preparation can vary. If using a wire stripper, take care not to cut through the conductor strands. Yamaha’s guide is How to Install Speaker Wire.
-
Connect the wire at the receiver or amplifier
Match the conductor you identified as positive to the red or positive terminal, and the other conductor to black or negative. For a binding post, loosen it, place the bare wire in the opening intended for wire, then tighten the post. For a spring clip, press the matching clip, insert the conductor, and release it. Use the terminal’s marked wire opening; do not assume all posts accept the same connector.

Amazon Basics 16-Gauge Speaker Wire Cable, Polarity Marked, 50 feet, Transparent- IN THE BOX: 16 gauge speaker wire cable (50 feet)
- CLEAR AUDIO: Plastic jacket helps ensure high-quality undistorted signals to and from audio equipment
- CONVENIENT: Connects audio speakers to an A/V receiver or amplifier
- SIMPLE INSTALL: White line on one side of wire indicates the polarity for a proper audio system set up
- EASY DISPENSING: Comes wrapped around a hard plastic spool for simple dispensing
-
Connect the other end at the speaker
Repeat the same polarity at the speaker: the positive conductor goes to positive/red, and the negative conductor goes to negative/black. Secure each wire using the speaker’s spring clips or binding posts as directed by its manual. Keeping the same conductor connected to positive at both ends preserves polarity.
-
Inspect the connections before restoring power
Check that the conductors are firmly held and that no loose copper strands bridge the two terminals or touch exposed metal. Yamaha warns that incorrect speaker-cable connections can cause a short circuit and damage the product or speakers. Prepare cable away from the equipment so loose strands do not fall inside. See Yamaha’s receiver manual.

Install Link 16 AWG Gauge Speaker Wire (100 Feet) Car or Home Theater (CCA)- PREMIUM SPEAKER WIRE [ Frosted Red/Black | 100-feet (30.5m) | 16 Gauge ] - Featuring a double conductor, this stranded wire is constructed from high-grade copper and aluminum. It is perfect for achieving outstanding audio performance, exceptional flexibility, easy stripping and great polarity identification.
- COPPER-CLAD ALUMINUM (CCA) - Made with an aluminum core and coated with a layer of copper, this cost effective speaker wire provides great conductivity with minimal signal loss.
- PERFECT FOR - Designed to provide adequate performance for any home theater system, car audio speakers or professional studio. It's a great choice for both DIY enthusiasts and professionals.
- SIMPLE INSTALLATION - Use this wire to easily connect your home theater or car audio speakers to any A/V receiver or amplifier.
- SOFTFLEX JACKET - Our wire is shielded with a soft and flexible jacket, which not only provides a great appearance, but also ensures maximum durability and easy installation.
-
Reconnect power and test
Once both ends pass inspection, reconnect power and test at low volume. If there is no sound or the receiver displays a wiring warning, power down and check that you selected the intended channel, each conductor is seated in its terminal, polarity matches at both ends, and no strands are touching across terminals.
Choose a connector that fits the terminals
| Connection method | What to know |
|---|---|
| Bare wire | Supported by the binding posts and spring clips shown in the cited instructions. Twist the strands together and take care to prevent stray strands from bridging terminals. |
| Banana plugs | An optional termination for compatible binding posts. Yamaha and Klipsch describe their use, but support varies by model and region; check both device manuals. |
| Pin connectors | Can fit some spring clips. Crutchfield notes that spring clips do not accept banana plugs or spade connectors; confirm fit for your equipment. |
Connector guidance is described in Yamaha’s wire-installation guide, Klipsch’s instructions, and Crutchfield’s guide.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Reversing polarity at one end: Match the same identified conductor to positive at both the receiver and the speaker.
- Leaving loose strands exposed: Stray copper can touch the other conductor or metal and create a short.
- Forcing an incompatible connector: Banana plugs, pins, and bare wire are not interchangeable across all terminals.
- Ignoring the receiver’s requirements: Check the manual for speaker-impedance requirements rather than assuming a universal recommendation.
- Wiring while equipment is connected to AC: Disconnect power before making connections, as the manufacturer directs.
