Use HDMI ARC or eARC if your TV and soundbar both have matching ports. Connect the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC) port, select the matching audio output on both devices, and enable HDMI-CEC if you want the TV remote to control the soundbar.
If HDMI is unavailable, optical digital audio is the most dependable fallback. Bluetooth works without a cable but can introduce delay, and analog audio is mainly for older equipment.

Before you start
- Check the labels beside every port on the TV and soundbar. Port shape alone is not enough: a regular HDMI input is not the same as an HDMI ARC/eARC port.
- Have the appropriate cable ready. For standard ARC, a reputable High Speed HDMI cable is normally the appropriate choice. For eARC and other high-bandwidth HDMI features, check the cable’s official category and certification labeling.
- Keep both devices powered off or in standby while making the initial connection.
- Have the TV and soundbar manuals available. Menu names differ by manufacturer, model, region, and software version.
Option 1: Connect with HDMI ARC or eARC
HDMI ARC and eARC are the preferred connections when both devices support them. They send the TV’s audio back to the soundbar through the same HDMI cable. With HDMI-CEC enabled, the TV remote may also control the soundbar’s volume, mute, and sometimes power functions.
Step 1: Find the correct ports
On the TV, look for a port labeled:
HDMI ARCHDMI eARCHDMI IN (ARC/eARC)
On the soundbar, look for:
HDMI OUT (TV-ARC)HDMI OUT (eARC/ARC)HDMI OUTwith an ARC or eARC label
Connect those two labeled ports. Do not connect the soundbar to an ordinary HDMI IN on the TV when the television has a dedicated ARC/eARC port. Likewise, do not use a regular HDMI input on the soundbar for the TV-return connection if the soundbar has a port labeled HDMI OUT (TV-ARC) or similar.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Step 2: Turn on both devices
After connecting the cable, turn on the television and soundbar. On the soundbar, select the input named ARC, eARC, TV, HDMI ARC, or the equivalent label used by that model.
Step 3: Change the TV’s audio output
Open the TV’s sound settings and choose the external audio system or HDMI ARC/eARC output. Depending on the TV, the setting may be called Sound Output, Audio Output, External Speaker, Receiver, or HDMI ARC.
Do not assume that connecting the cable automatically disables the TV speakers. Many TVs continue using their internal speakers until the output is changed manually.
Step 4: Enable HDMI-CEC if you want remote control
HDMI-CEC is the control feature that can let the TV remote operate compatible connected devices. Manufacturers use different names for it, including:
Recommended Free Tools
- Anynet+ on Samsung equipment
- BRAVIA Sync or a similar name on Sony equipment
- Other manufacturer-specific names on different TVs
Enable HDMI-CEC in the TV settings and, if the soundbar has a separate HDMI-control setting, enable it there as well. CEC is useful but not perfectly consistent across brands, so a soundbar can still produce audio even if remote-control integration does not work.

Step 5: Test the connection
Play a broadcast channel or streaming program. Test volume, mute, and—if HDMI-CEC is enabled—power control. Also check whether speech is synchronized with the picture.
HDMI ARC versus eARC
ARC and eARC are related but different capabilities. eARC has substantially more bandwidth and can support formats such as uncompressed multichannel audio, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, and DTS:X when the TV, soundbar, cable, and content source all support them. eARC specifications also support audio up to 192 kHz/24-bit and higher-bitrate formats.
For ordinary TV broadcasts and streaming, you usually do not need to identify every audio format. The practical rules are:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Use ARC when both devices have ARC.
- Use eARC when both devices have eARC and you need the additional audio capability.
- Do not assume that an eARC TV and an ARC soundbar will provide eARC-level features. The connection is limited by the lower-capability device.
- Do not assume that eARC is automatically backward-compatible with every ARC device. Check the specifications for the exact TV and soundbar.
- For high-bandwidth eARC setups, use a cable with the category and certification recommended for the equipment.
An eARC TV may work with an ARC soundbar in some configurations, but the result should be treated as an ARC connection, not as full eARC performance.
Option 2: Connect with optical digital audio
Optical is the best fallback when one or both devices lack ARC/eARC but both have optical ports. It is also useful when HDMI control is not important.
Setup steps
- Find the TV port labeled
Optical Digital Audio Out,Digital Audio Out (Optical), or similar. - Find the soundbar port labeled
Optical InorDigital Optical In. - Remove any protective caps from the ends of the Toslink cable.
- Connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input. Align the connector with the port and do not force it; excessive force can damage the optical terminal.
- Set the soundbar’s input to
OpticalorD.IN, depending on the model. - Change the TV’s sound output to
Optical,Digital Audio Out,External Speaker, or the equivalent option.
Optical carries digital audio reliably, but it generally cannot provide HDMI-CEC features such as controlling the soundbar’s volume and power with the TV remote. It also has lower format capability than eARC; Samsung, for example, identifies optical as limited to modes up to 5.1 channels. If your TV remote cannot change the soundbar volume over optical, that is normally a limitation of the connection rather than a defective cable.
Option 3: Pair the soundbar over Bluetooth
Bluetooth can work when both the TV and soundbar support Bluetooth audio. It is useful when running a cable is inconvenient or the TV lacks a suitable digital output.

- Put the soundbar into Bluetooth pairing mode. This may require pressing a
Bluetooth,Pair, orSourcebutton. - Open the TV’s sound-output or Bluetooth-device menu.
- Choose
Bluetooth,Wireless Speaker, or the manufacturer’s equivalent option. - Select the soundbar from the list of available devices.
- Switch the soundbar to its Bluetooth input if it does not change automatically.
Bluetooth behavior is model-dependent. Audio delay, supported codecs, automatic reconnection, volume control, and synchronization can vary. A slight delay may be noticeable during dialogue or gaming, so HDMI ARC/eARC or optical is usually preferable for a fixed home-theater installation.
Option 4: Use an analog audio connection
Analog is a last-resort wired option for older equipment. The TV may provide audio through a 3.5-mm headphone or stereo output, while the soundbar may use a 3.5-mm or red-and-white RCA input.
- Identify the TV’s analog audio output and the matching soundbar input.
- Use a suitable stereo cable or adapter, such as a 3.5-mm-to-RCA cable when the devices require those connections.
- Connect the cable without forcing the plugs.
- Select the corresponding analog input on the soundbar.
- Set the TV’s audio output to headphones, analog, line out, or the relevant external-speaker option.
Analog connections are generally stereo. They do not normally carry surround formats or HDMI-style device-control commands, so they are not the preferred connection for a modern surround-sound system.
What cable should you buy?
Choose the cable based on the connection standard, not on claims that an expensive cable will produce “better sound” or “more bass.” A cable must be compatible with the features your equipment actually uses.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Standard HDMI ARC: A reputable High Speed HDMI cable is the natural choice for an ordinary TV-to-soundbar ARC connection.
- eARC or advanced HDMI features: Check the equipment manuals and look for the appropriate official cable category and certification. An Ultra High Speed HDMI cable is the safer choice for eARC setups involving high-bandwidth audio and video, provided the rest of the equipment supports those features.
- Optical: Use a digital optical or Toslink cable. Remove protective caps before inserting it.
- Analog: Use the correct 3.5-mm, RCA, or 3.5-mm-to-RCA stereo cable.
Not every HDMI cable supports every eARC, surround-audio, or high-bandwidth video configuration. Verify the cable labeling and the requirements in the TV and soundbar specifications rather than paying extra for vague “premium sound” claims.
How to fix a soundbar with no sound
Work through these checks in order. Most connection failures are caused by the wrong port, the wrong input, or the TV still sending sound to its internal speakers.
1. Check the physical connection
- For HDMI, confirm that the cable runs from the TV’s ARC/eARC-labeled port to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT/TV-ARC/eARC port.
- For optical, confirm that the cable runs from the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s optical input.
- For analog, confirm that the cable is connected to an audio output on the TV and an audio input on the soundbar.
- Make sure the connectors are fully inserted, but never force an optical connector.
2. Select the matching soundbar input
A soundbar set to Bluetooth, a regular HDMI input, or optical will remain silent if the TV is sending audio through ARC. Use the soundbar remote or source button to select the input that matches the cable.

3. Change the TV’s output setting
Open the TV’s audio settings and select the matching external output: HDMI ARC/eARC, optical, Bluetooth, analog, or external speaker. Menu names differ across manufacturers and models, so use the exact manual if the setting is difficult to locate.
4. Enable HDMI-CEC and ARC/eARC settings
Some HDMI ARC/eARC implementations require HDMI-CEC to be enabled. On Samsung TVs, check Anynet+ as well as the ARC/eARC setting. Also review the TV’s digital-audio-output setting and the soundbar’s HDMI-control or ARC mode.
5. Try PCM if the format is incompatible
If the TV is set to Dolby, passthrough, or another format that the soundbar cannot decode, temporarily change the digital-audio setting to PCM or the most compatible option.
PCM is a diagnostic step, not automatically the best final setting. Once audio works, try Auto, Passthrough, Dolby, or another mode only if the TV and soundbar manuals confirm that the devices support it.
6. Power-cycle the HDMI connection
- Turn off the TV and soundbar.
- Disconnect the HDMI cable for a short time.
- Reconnect it to the correct ARC/eARC ports.
- Turn the TV and soundbar back on.
- Recheck HDMI-CEC, the TV audio output, and the soundbar input.
If the problem remains, try another compatible HDMI cable. Then check both manufacturers’ support pages for firmware updates and model-specific instructions.
7. Test another soundbar source
If the soundbar works with Bluetooth, an attached player, or another source but not with the TV, the likely problem is the TV output setting, cable, ARC/eARC handshake, or an unsupported audio format. If the soundbar produces no sound from any source, check its power, mute state, selected input, and model-specific hardware troubleshooting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When do you need a converter?
A converter or HDMI ARC/eARC audio extractor may help when the TV and soundbar have incompatible outputs and no direct connection is available. It is not a universal fix. Before buying one, verify the exact ports and whether the device supports the required HDMI-CEC behavior, HDCP version, resolution, ARC/eARC mode, and audio formats.
If the TV has no ARC/eARC, optical, Bluetooth, or analog audio output, there is no straightforward direct connection. A converter or different audio device may be required, but compatibility should be confirmed against the exact model numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is HDMI ARC or optical better for a soundbar?
HDMI ARC or eARC is usually the best option because it sends TV audio to the soundbar digitally and may allow the TV remote to control volume, mute, and power through HDMI-CEC. eARC offers more bandwidth than ARC, but both devices, the cable, and the content must support the desired features.
Which HDMI port do I use for a soundbar?
Connect the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC to the soundbar’s HDMI OUT port labeled TV-ARC, ARC, or eARC. A regular HDMI input is not the correct TV-return port when a dedicated ARC/eARC port is available.
Can I connect an ARC soundbar to an eARC TV?
Yes, an eARC TV can often connect to an ARC soundbar, but the connection will be limited by the lower-capability ARC soundbar. Do not expect eARC-level formats or bandwidth, and check both manufacturers’ specifications because eARC is not automatically backward-compatible with every ARC device.
Why is my soundbar connected but there is no sound?
Set the soundbar to its ARC, eARC, TV, or HDMI ARC input, then change the TV’s audio output to HDMI ARC/eARC or External Speaker. Also check HDMI-CEC, called Anynet+ on Samsung equipment and BRAVIA Sync or a similar name on some Sony equipment.
What should I do if the soundbar cannot decode the TV audio format?
Temporarily set the TV’s digital audio output to PCM. A Dolby, passthrough, or other format may not be supported by the soundbar. After sound returns, test Auto or passthrough only when both devices’ manuals confirm compatibility.

The Bottom Line
For most installations, connect a High Speed HDMI cable between the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port and the soundbar’s HDMI OUT (TV-ARC/eARC) port, select the matching audio output, and enable HDMI-CEC if desired. Use optical as the dependable fallback, Bluetooth for cable-free convenience, and analog only for older equipment.
