The simplest way to connect a non-smart TV to Wi-Fi is to add a Wi-Fi streaming device. Plug a Roku, Google TV, Apple TV, Fire TV, or similar player into the television’s HDMI port. The player connects wirelessly to your router, runs the streaming apps, and sends the picture and sound to the TV through HDMI.
This is not usually a completely cable-free setup: the streaming device still needs an HDMI connection to the TV and a separate power connection. The wireless part is the connection between the streaming device and your home network.
What you need
- A TV with an HDMI input. Look for a port labeled HDMI, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, or something similar on the back or side of the set.
- A Wi-Fi-capable streaming device. Common options include a Roku streaming player or stick, Google TV Streamer, Chromecast with Google TV, Apple TV, and a compatible Fire TV streaming stick.
- Power for the streaming device. Use its supplied wall adapter whenever possible. Some TV USB ports do not provide enough power.
- Your Wi-Fi network name and password. You will enter these during setup.
- Any required accounts. Depending on the device, you may need a Roku, Google, Apple, or Amazon account, as well as separate accounts or subscriptions for streaming services.
The TV itself does not need to have apps or a built-in operating system. It only needs to display the signal from the external player. The available apps, resolution, account requirements, and subscription costs vary by device, streaming service, and country.

How to connect the TV using HDMI
1. Find an available HDMI port
Inspect the television’s rear or side panel for a wide, flat port marked HDMI. If there is more than one, note the number—for example, HDMI 1 or HDMI 2. You will need to select this same input with the TV remote later.
An HDMI-equipped television is generally suitable for a current streaming player. Its maximum picture quality will still be limited by the TV. For example, a 1080p television can use a 4K-capable streamer, but it cannot display the video in 4K.

2. Connect the streaming device to the TV
Plug a streaming stick directly into the HDMI port, or connect a streaming box to the television with an HDMI cable. If the player does not include a suitable cable, a High Speed HDMI cable is normally appropriate for standard HD equipment. A 4K/HDR setup may require a cable and HDMI input that support the relevant format.
3. Connect the device to power
Connect the streaming player to its supplied power adapter and plug the adapter into a wall outlet. Some sticks can draw power from a TV USB port, but this is not guaranteed. Insufficient power can cause a low-power warning, repeated restarts, failure to boot, or an unstable connection.
If any of those symptoms occur, stop using the TV’s USB port and use the supplied wall adapter instead. Use compatible power equipment rather than an arbitrary replacement adapter, particularly if the original adapter is missing.
4. Select the correct input on the TV
Turn on the television and press the remote’s Input, Source, or similarly labeled button. Select the HDMI number used by the streaming device. You should see the player’s welcome or setup screen.
If the screen says “No signal,” the most likely causes are an incorrect TV input, a loose HDMI connection, a disconnected power cable, or a device that has not finished starting.
5. Connect the player to Wi-Fi
Follow the on-screen setup instructions. In a typical setup you will:
- Choose Wireless or Wi-Fi as the network connection.
- Select your home network from the list.
- Enter the Wi-Fi password exactly as it appears, including capital letters and symbols.
- Allow the player to check for and install software updates.
- Complete any display, remote-control, account, or activation steps.
Roku’s setup flow, for example, asks you to choose the wireless connection, select the network, enter the password, and update the player. Google TV devices may use the Google Home app alongside the television and remote-control setup. Apple TV completes setup through its on-screen instructions and can use Wi-Fi or Ethernet on models that include an Ethernet port.

6. Install streaming apps and sign in
Once the player is online, open its app store or channel interface. Install the services you use and sign in to each one. A streaming device does not automatically provide every service for free: many platforms require their own subscription, and app availability can differ by device and region.
Which streaming device should you choose?
Roku streaming stick or player
A Roku streaming stick is a straightforward choice for an HDMI-equipped non-smart TV. It provides Wi-Fi, a remote-controlled interface, streaming apps, and software updates in one device. Roku’s current players are designed for televisions with HDMI inputs. Check the particular model before buying if you need 4K, HDR, Dolby audio, or a specific app.

Google TV Streamer or Chromecast with Google TV
Google TV Streamer or Chromecast with Google TV suits people who prefer Google’s interface, Google Assistant, or casting from compatible mobile apps. These devices connect to an HDMI-equipped display, use Wi-Fi for internet access, and require power. Chromecast with Google TV setup can involve a compatible phone or tablet and the Google Home app.
Check the box contents carefully: the Google TV Streamer may require an HDMI cable that is sold separately. A Google Account is also part of the setup for Google TV products.
Apple TV
Apple TV is a sensible option for a household already using iPhones, iPads, Apple services, or other Apple devices. It requires an HDMI-equipped television, an HDMI cable, power, and internet access. Some Apple TV models can connect to the router with Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi, although that is a wired networking alternative—not a way to eliminate the HDMI and power cables.

What if the TV has no HDMI port?
Very old televisions may have only composite inputs: normally a yellow video connector and red and white audio connectors. Current mainstream streaming devices are principally designed for HDMI displays, so an analog TV is not guaranteed to work with them.
A possible workaround is a powered HDMI-to-composite AV converter. The connection must run in this direction:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Streaming device HDMI output → converter HDMI input → converter composite outputs → TV composite inputs
Do not buy a composite-to-HDMI converter by mistake; that is the reverse direction and will not solve this setup.
This workaround has important limitations:
- The converter needs its own power.
- The picture will generally be reduced to standard-definition output.
- HDCP copy protection can prevent some content from displaying.
- Resolution, audio format, aspect ratio, and compatibility vary between converters and televisions.
- Streaming-device manufacturers generally do not guarantee compatibility with every third-party converter or analog TV.
For occasional use, a powered converter may be worth trying. If you want reliable access to modern streaming apps, replacing the very old television with an HDMI-equipped display is often more practical than troubleshooting an analog conversion chain.

Things that do not add Wi-Fi streaming by themselves
A Wi-Fi router
A router provides network access, but it does not give a conventional TV an app platform, remote-controlled streaming interface, or video input. You still need a device that receives the internet stream and outputs video to the television.
Recommended Free Tools
A generic USB Wi-Fi adapter
A USB Wi-Fi adapter normally cannot turn an old television into a smart TV. Older TV USB ports may be intended for service functions or playing files from USB storage rather than networking. Unless the television manufacturer specifically supports that adapter and provides smart-TV software, it is not a complete solution.
Phone screen mirroring alone
Mirroring a phone requires a compatible receiving platform. A non-smart TV generally needs an external receiver, streaming stick, or other adapter. A phone by itself cannot send a wireless picture directly to an ordinary TV.
A wireless HDMI transmitter
A wireless HDMI transmitter and receiver can move an existing HDMI signal from one location to another. It does not provide streaming apps or connect the TV to the internet. It is useful for a different problem—sending video from a source device across a room—not for upgrading a non-smart TV.
Buying checklist
- Confirm that the TV has an available HDMI input.
- Choose a device that supports the streaming services you actually use in your region.
- Check whether the device includes an HDMI cable, power adapter, remote, and batteries.
- Make sure the TV has the resolution you want. A 4K streamer cannot make a 1080p TV display 4K.
- Check the location of the power outlet and whether the streaming device’s cable will reach it.
- If the TV has only red, white, and yellow inputs, treat HDMI-to-composite conversion as a conditional workaround, not a guaranteed solution.
- Do not buy a Wi-Fi extender unless the streaming device actually has a weak signal at the TV.
Troubleshooting
“No signal” or a blank screen
- Press Input or Source and select the HDMI port where the player is connected.
- Unplug and firmly reconnect the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Confirm that the player’s power light is on or that its welcome screen appears.
- Try another HDMI input or cable if available.
- Restart the TV and streaming device.
The device keeps restarting or shows a low-power warning
Move the power connection from the TV’s USB port to the supplied wall adapter. Some television USB ports do not provide enough current for a streaming stick, especially during startup or software updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe Wi-Fi network does not appear
Confirm that the router is powered on and that another device can see the network. Move the streaming player or router away from thick walls, metal objects, enclosed cabinets, and other sources of interference. If the network is hidden, use the device’s option to manually add a network where available, then enter the network name and security details.

The Wi-Fi password is rejected
Re-enter it carefully, paying attention to uppercase letters, numbers, spaces, and punctuation. Restart the router and streaming device, then try again. If several phones or computers also cannot connect, the problem is more likely to be the router or internet service than the television setup.
Video buffers or quality drops
First test the connection near the TV and restart the router and streaming player. Improve the player’s position if possible; an enclosed cabinet can weaken wireless performance. A Wi-Fi mesh node or extender may help when coverage is genuinely weak near the television, but it will not fix a slow internet plan, service outage, overloaded network, or incompatible streaming device. If the player supports Ethernet and running a cable is practical, a wired connection may be more stable.
4K or HDR is unavailable
All parts of the chain must support the required format: the television, streaming player, HDMI cable, and the particular HDMI input. Also confirm that the content and subscription support 4K or HDR. A standard HD TV will continue to work with a 4K-capable player, but the output will be limited to the TV’s capabilities.

There is no sound through a soundbar or receiver
Check whether the streamer is connected directly to the TV or through the soundbar or receiver. Then verify the TV’s audio-output setting, HDMI-ARC/eARC connections where applicable, and the audio formats supported by every device in the chain. If necessary, test the streaming player directly into the TV to identify whether the problem is the player, TV, cable, soundbar, or receiver.
Bottom line
For most non-smart TVs, buy a compatible Wi-Fi streaming player, connect it to an HDMI input, power it from a wall outlet, select the matching TV input, and join it to your Wi-Fi network. A Roku, Google TV device, Apple TV, or compatible Fire TV can provide the apps and internet connection that the television lacks.
If the TV has only composite inputs, an HDMI-to-composite converter is possible but less reliable and usually produces standard-definition video. In that situation, replacing the TV with an HDMI-equipped model is often the simpler long-term solution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I connect a non-smart TV to Wi-Fi without an HDMI cable?
Usually no. The streaming device connects to Wi-Fi wirelessly, but it normally still needs HDMI to send picture and sound to the TV, plus a separate power connection.
Can a USB Wi-Fi adapter make an old TV smart?
Usually not. A generic USB Wi-Fi adapter does not supply the operating system, apps, or video processing required for streaming. Use an external HDMI streaming player instead.
Can I use a Roku on an old TV?
Yes, if the TV has an HDMI input and the Roku model supports the television’s connection and power requirements. If the TV has only yellow, red, and white composite inputs, a powered HDMI-to-composite converter may work, but compatibility is not guaranteed.
Do I need a subscription to use a streaming device?
The device itself provides the streaming interface, but individual services may require separate subscriptions or purchases. App availability and charges vary by service, device, and region.
