To connect a Bose soundbar to your TV, use HDMI ARC or eARC when both devices have labeled ARC/eARC ports; otherwise use optical audio. Then select external audio in the TV settings, disable TV speakers if needed, and enable HDMI-CEC for remote volume and power control. Exact ports and menus vary by Bose model.

Key takeaways: how to connect a Bose soundbar to your TV

  • Use HDMI ARC or eARC when the TV and Bose soundbar both have ports labeled ARC or eARC.
  • Use an optical digital audio cable when the TV does not have an HDMI ARC/eARC port.
  • A normal HDMI input is not a substitute for the TV’s ARC/eARC port.
  • Select the external audio system in the TV’s sound settings and disable the internal TV speakers if the TV provides that option.
  • HDMI-CEC may be required for the TV remote to control soundbar volume and power.
  • Bose model names, port labels, included cables, app steps, and supported audio formats vary by soundbar generation.

Which connection should you use?

HDMI ARC or eARC is usually the best connection because one HDMI cable carries TV audio and may also support TV-remote volume and power control through HDMI-CEC. Use optical as the main fallback when the TV or soundbar does not provide a compatible ARC/eARC port.

Connection Required ports Remote control Best use
HDMI ARC/eARC TV HDMI ARC or eARC and Bose HDMI ARC/eARC or HDMI OUT TO TV (ARC) HDMI-CEC may provide volume and power control Compatible newer TVs and soundbars
Optical TV optical output and Bose OPTICAL IN Remote behavior varies by model and setup TVs without ARC/eARC or setups that work more reliably over optical
Bluetooth Bluetooth support on both the specific TV and Bose model Compatibility and controls vary Only when the exact TV and soundbar documentation confirms TV-audio support

Bose describes ARC, or Audio Return Channel, as allowing the TV and soundbar to send audio through a single HDMI cable. Bose also describes eARC as the higher-bandwidth option for advanced formats such as Dolby Atmos. Atmos is not guaranteed merely because an HDMI cable is connected; the Bose model, TV, source device, content, and settings must all support it. See Bose’s soundbar connection and format guidance.

How do you connect a Bose soundbar to a TV with HDMI?

To connect a Bose soundbar to a TV with HDMI, connect the TV’s HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC to the Bose soundbar’s HDMI ARC/eARC or HDMI OUT TO TV (ARC) port. Do not use an ordinary HDMI input on the TV unless the TV labels that port ARC or eARC.

  1. Turn off or mute the TV and soundbar.
  2. Inspect the TV’s HDMI ports and find the one labeled ARC or eARC. A standard HDMI input is not the correct port.
  3. Find the Bose port labeled HDMI ARC/eARC or HDMI OUT TO TV (ARC).
  4. Connect the two labeled ports with an HDMI cable. Bose’s Smart Soundbar 300 instructions specify a cable rated High Speed or better; use the cable supplied with the soundbar when it is available and suitable. Bose’s HDMI connection instructions provide the model-specific requirements.
  5. Turn on the TV and soundbar.
  6. Open the TV’s sound or audio menu and choose External audio system, Receiver, Soundbar, or the equivalent HDMI ARC/eARC output. The exact label depends on the TV manufacturer.
  7. Enable HDMI-CEC if the TV requires it for volume, power, or automatic input switching. HDMI-CEC may have a different branded name in the TV menu.
  8. Play a TV channel or streaming program, select the TV source on the Bose soundbar if necessary, and raise the volume.

Need a replacement cable? A High Speed HDMI cable is the relevant replacement for an ARC/eARC connection. It is not a mandatory purchase if the original Bose cable is present and appropriate.

Can you connect a Bose soundbar with an optical cable?

Yes. Connect the TV’s optical audio output to the Bose soundbar’s OPTICAL IN, then select optical or external audio in the TV and choose the optical source on the Bose remote or soundbar if required.

  1. Find the TV port labeled Optical, Digital Audio Out, or Optical OUT.
  2. Connect one end of an optical digital audio cable to the TV’s output port.
  3. Connect the other end to the Bose soundbar’s OPTICAL IN port. The TV must provide the output, and the soundbar must provide the input.
  4. Open the TV’s sound menu and select optical, digital audio out, external audio, or the equivalent setting.
  5. Select the TV or optical source on the Bose remote or soundbar, depending on the model.
  6. Play a program and test the volume.

Bose identifies optical as the alternative when a TV does not have an HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC in its Smart Soundbar 700 setup instructions. Bose’s older SoundTouch 300 quick-start guide also presents HDMI ARC as the preferred connection and optical as the alternative.

Need the fallback cable? An optical digital audio cable is the appropriate accessory for a TV without HDMI ARC/eARC. Optical should be treated as a fallback connection, not an additional cable that every Bose owner must buy.

What TV and soundbar settings should you change?

The TV must send audio to the external soundbar instead of continuing to use its built-in speakers. Open the TV’s Settings, Sound, or Audio menu and look for an output option such as Audio Output, Sound Output, Speaker Select, or Digital Audio Out.

  • Set the TV’s digital audio format to a mode supported by both the TV and the particular Bose soundbar if audio is missing or unstable. Menu names and supported formats vary, so use the model-specific Bose guide rather than assuming every Bose soundbar has the same options.
  • Enable HDMI-CEC when you want the TV remote to control the soundbar’s volume or power.

HDMI-CEC is not always called HDMI-CEC. TV manufacturers may use their own names for the feature, so search the TV settings for the manufacturer’s HDMI device-control, connected-device, or universal-remote option.

Why is there no sound from your Bose soundbar?

No sound usually means the cable is in the wrong port, the TV is still using its internal speakers, the Bose soundbar is on the wrong source, or the soundbar is muted. Check the following in order.

1. Confirm the physical connection

For HDMI, confirm that the cable connects the TV port labeled ARC or eARC to the Bose ARC/eARC or HDMI OUT TO TV (ARC) port. For optical, confirm that the cable connects the TV’s optical OUT to the soundbar’s OPTICAL IN. A cable connected to a regular HDMI input or the wrong optical direction will not provide the intended TV-audio connection.

2. Select the correct TV output

Return to the TV audio menu and select the external audio system, HDMI ARC/eARC, or optical output that matches the cable. Turn off the internal TV speakers when the TV provides that option.

3. Check the Bose source and mute state

Select the TV or optical source on the Bose remote or in the Bose app as appropriate for the model. Confirm that the soundbar is not muted and increase its volume.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Check HDMI-CEC

If HDMI audio works but the TV remote does not change the soundbar volume or wake the soundbar with the TV, enable HDMI-CEC in the TV settings. CEC affects device control; it is separate from confirming that the audio cable is connected to the correct port.

5. Restart the equipment

Disconnect and firmly reconnect the cable at both ends. If the problem remains, unplug the soundbar and related equipment, wait briefly, reconnect power, and test again. Bose’s owner’s guide troubleshooting instructions include power-cycling as a troubleshooting step.

6. Test another source or application

Try another TV channel, app, or input. If one application produces no sound but another works, the problem may involve that source’s audio output or format rather than the cable connection.

Can a Bose soundbar connect to a TV wirelessly?

Bluetooth should be treated as model- and TV-dependent, not as the default method for Bose TV audio. Bose’s official TV setup instructions center on HDMI ARC/eARC and optical connections, while Bluetooth documentation commonly describes wireless devices and music use. Confirm wireless TV-audio compatibility in the manuals for both the exact TV and exact Bose model before relying on Bluetooth.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that Bluetooth headphones can be paired through every Bose soundbar. One Bose owner’s guide states, “You can’t connect Bluetooth headphones to the soundbar.” Read the Bose owner’s guide for the specific product before attempting a wireless setup.

How do you control a Bose soundbar with the TV remote?

Use HDMI ARC/eARC and enable HDMI-CEC when the TV and Bose soundbar support the feature. After the connection is working, select the external audio system in the TV settings and test the TV remote’s volume and power buttons.

If the TV remote does not control volume, confirm that HDMI-CEC is enabled on the TV and that the HDMI cable is connected to the TV’s ARC/eARC port rather than a standard HDMI input. Optical connections may still provide sound, but remote-control behavior varies by Bose model and TV setup. The Bose remote or app may be required for some functions.

Does every Bose soundbar use the same setup?

No. The general method is consistent, but port labels, included cables, app setup, remote behavior, audio-format support, and menu instructions vary among products such as the Smart Soundbar 300, Smart Soundbar 700, Smart Soundbar 900, current Bose Smart Soundbar, Bose TV Speaker, and older SoundTouch products.

Inspect the labels on your own TV and soundbar before connecting anything. Bose product packages may differ: Bose lists both HDMI and optical cables with some current products, including the Bose Smart Soundbar, while the exact contents should be verified for the model and package being purchased.

Situation Recommended action Important qualification
Both devices have ARC/eARC-labeled HDMI ports Use HDMI ARC/eARC Use the matching labeled ports, not a standard HDMI input
TV lacks ARC/eARC but has optical output Use optical from TV OUT to Bose OPTICAL IN Select optical or external audio in the TV and Bose source settings
Original cable is included and undamaged Use the supplied cable Do not buy a replacement unnecessarily
Cable is missing, damaged, or too short Replace it with the cable type required by the chosen connection Use a High Speed HDMI cable or better for the HDMI workflow described by Bose; use optical for the optical workflow
TV stand or cabinet blocks the soundbar Reposition it or consider an optional compatible wall mount or bracket Mounting is not required to connect the soundbar

Where should you place the Bose soundbar?

Place the soundbar centered below the TV with its front unobstructed. Avoid recessing the soundbar inside a cabinet because the cabinet can limit the soundstage. A compatible wall mount or bracket may help when the TV stand blocks the soundbar or when the television is wall-mounted, but mounting is an optional installation choice rather than a connection requirement. Bose provides product-specific placement information for models such as the Bose TV Speaker.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which HDMI port do I use for a Bose soundbar?

The correct HDMI port is the one labeled ARC or eARC on the TV, connected to the Bose soundbar’s HDMI ARC/eARC or HDMI OUT TO TV (ARC) port. A standard HDMI input is not the correct port for this connection.

Can I connect a Bose soundbar to my TV with an optical cable?

Yes, an optical cable connects the TV’s optical or Digital Audio Out port to the Bose soundbar’s OPTICAL IN port. Select optical or external audio in the TV settings and choose the optical source on the Bose soundbar if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I connect a Bose soundbar to my TV wirelessly?

Bluetooth TV audio is model-dependent and should not be assumed. Bose’s official TV setup guidance centers on HDMI ARC/eARC or optical, so check the manuals for the exact TV and Bose soundbar before attempting a wireless connection.

The Bottom Line

For the quickest reliable setup, connect the TV’s HDMI ARC/eARC port to the Bose soundbar’s matching ARC/eARC port, select external audio on the TV, and enable HDMI-CEC for remote control. If ARC/eARC is unavailable, connect the TV’s optical output to the soundbar’s OPTICAL IN and select the optical source.
