Short answer: A higher amp-hour (Ah) rating generally means more stored capacity, but it does not translate into a fixed number of runtime hours. Runtime depends on the tool, material, load, duty cycle, temperature, and battery platform. Before buying a larger pack, confirm that its voltage family fits the tool; then compare the exact charger and its manual rather than relying on the charger’s amp label alone.
For example, DEWALT’s DCB609 FLEXVOLT pack is rated at 9Ah and 180 watt-hours, and DEWALT says it delivers “up to 6X the runtime” in 20V MAX tools compared with the DCB201 1.5Ah pack. That is a specific manufacturer comparison, not a universal runtime multiplier for every tool or job.

What an amp-hour rating actually tells you
An amp-hour is a capacity rating. In simplified terms, 1Ah represents the ability to deliver 1 amp for 1 hour under specified test conditions. A 5Ah pack therefore contains more available charge than a 2Ah pack in the same battery family. It does not mean that every tool will run for five hours, or that a 5Ah pack will always last exactly 2.5 times as long as a 2Ah pack.
A cordless tool draws current according to its motor, control electronics, work material and load. A drill driving small screws may draw little current for much of a job; a saw cutting dense lumber or a grinder working continuously can draw substantially more. The same battery can therefore last very different lengths of time in two tools, and even in the same tool under different working conditions.

Capacity is not the same as power
Ah describes how much charge a pack can store. It does not, by itself, describe the maximum power the pack can deliver at an instant. High-output cells, pack design, temperature and the tool’s electronics also affect current delivery. DEWALT’s POWERSTACK performance statements are tied to specific comparison models and footnotes; they should not be rewritten as a general runtime guarantee for every POWERSTACK battery.
Watt-hours help when voltage differs
Watt-hours (Wh) express energy by combining capacity and voltage. They are useful when comparing batteries that do not share the same voltage platform, but only when the manufacturer provides a reliable Wh figure or the voltage basis is clear. DEWALT lists the DCB609 as 180Wh. Do not infer that two packs with the same Ah rating necessarily store the same energy if they belong to different voltage systems.

DEWALT explains that “20V MAX” is the maximum initial voltage measured without a workload, while the nominal voltage is 18V. The two labels describe different points in the same battery system; they are not automatically different classes of pack. When checking compatibility, use the platform and model information, not a comparison between the words “20V” and “18V” alone.
A battery listing may therefore show a 20V MAX designation while technical material refers to an 18V nominal value. That is normal for this platform. The important questions are whether the tool accepts that battery family and whether the charger is designed for the pack.
How long will a DEWALT 5Ah battery last?
There is no honest single-hour answer without the tool and task. A 5Ah battery’s runtime can change with cutting or drilling load, trigger time, pauses, material hardness, accessory condition, ambient temperature and the pack’s age. Published “up to” figures also depend on the exact comparison and test conditions.

Use a measured baseline when you need a job estimate:
- Identify the exact tool and battery platform. Record the tool model, battery model and whether the work is intermittent or continuous.
- Run a representative task. Use the same material, bit or blade, feed pressure and work pattern expected on site. Avoid using an unloaded bench test as a production estimate.
- Record active trigger time or completed work. For example, count finished cuts or installed fasteners rather than assuming that a full shift equals continuous motor operation.
- Repeat the measurement. Two or more comparable cycles give a more useful range than one run, especially when the work alternates between high and low loads.
- Scale cautiously when comparing capacities on the same platform. A larger Ah rating can provide more capacity, but the result will not be exact because current demand, cutoff behavior and temperature vary.
This method produces a job-specific planning number without pretending that an Ah-to-hours conversion is universal. DEWALT’s DCB609 example illustrates the right way to read a runtime statement: its “up to 6X” claim is against the DCB201 1.5Ah battery in 20V MAX tools. It is not evidence that every 9Ah pack lasts six times as long as every 1.5Ah pack in every application.
Is a 5Ah battery better than a 2Ah battery?
“Better” depends on the work. A 5Ah pack is usually the capacity choice when fewer battery changes matter more than minimum weight. A 2Ah pack can be preferable for overhead work, ladders, tight spaces or repeated handling where a lighter tool is easier to control. Neither rating is automatically the right choice for every DEWALT tool.

Capacity alone does not establish a systematic size, weight or runtime advantage across DEWALT’s entire lineup. Compare the dimensions and weight of the exact candidate packs if balance or fatigue is important.
Which DEWALT batteries fit my tool?
Start with the tool’s supported battery family, then confirm the charger. Do not choose by Ah first. DEWALT uses platform labels with specific electrical and mechanical implications.

20V MAX packs
DEWALT lists the DCBP320, a 3.5Ah 20V MAX XR POWERSTACK battery, as compatible with 20V MAX tools and chargers. A 20V MAX battery listing is not a promise that it fits a 60V MAX-only tool; the tool documentation controls.
The DCB2104 is another 20V MAX option, rated at 4Ah. Its listing repeats the 20V MAX maximum-initial-voltage and 18V-nominal explanation. Treat the model number and stated platform as the compatibility check, not the Ah number.
FLEXVOLT and automatic voltage switching
DEWALT lists the DCB609 FLEXVOLT 9Ah battery as compatible with 20V MAX, 60V MAX and 120V MAX tools, with automatic voltage switching when it is moved between tools. It is also listed as compatible with all 20V MAX chargers. That combination is a product-specific feature; do not assume that every battery marked 20V MAX or every FLEXVOLT pack behaves identically.
Use this compatibility sequence
- Read the tool’s label and instruction manual for its supported battery platform.
- Check the battery listing for the same platform and any stated voltage-switching capability.
- Confirm that the charger is specified for that battery family.
- Check physical fit and locking engagement before taking the tool to a job.
- If the model information conflicts between a retailer listing and the manufacturer documentation, follow the current DEWALT manual and product page.
How long does a DEWALT battery take to charge?
Charge time depends on the battery’s remaining capacity, charger model, temperature, battery condition and the charger’s control strategy. A charger’s amp rating is not itself a full-charge time. A 12-amp charger does not mean that every pack takes a fixed number of minutes, and a simple Ah-divided-by-amps calculation is not a manufacturer charge-time specification.

DEWALT calls the DCB1112 a 20V MAX/FLEXVOLT 12 Amp Fast Charger. Its instruction manual states: “The DCB1112 battery charger is designed to charge DEWALT 20V Max* Lithium-ion and FLEXVOLT battery packs.” This establishes the charger’s stated battery families, not a complete charge-time table for every capacity.

For a dependable time estimate, identify the exact pack and charger combination and consult the current instruction manual. If a manual gives a time range or charging procedure, retain the conditions attached to that figure. Without that model-specific guidance, plan around swap batteries rather than promising that one pack will recharge during a particular break.
Charging workflow for a construction crew
- Inventory the models. Write down every battery and charger model, including mixed 20V MAX and FLEXVOLT equipment.
- Match each pack to an approved charger. Do not infer compatibility from the connector shape alone.
- Schedule charging by work demand. Put the packs used for the highest-load tools first, while retaining enough charged batteries for active tools.
- Allow for real turnaround. Include time for removing a pack, placing it on the charger, checking indicators and returning it to service; do not schedule to an unsupported minute figure.
- Rotate packs. A charged spare often protects productivity better than trying to predict one exact runtime number.
- Follow the charger manual. Use its instructions for indicator meanings, temperature conditions and any storage or maintenance requirements.

Choosing capacity for common construction work
Drills and impact drivers
For fastening, the useful question is how much active trigger time and how many fasteners the crew needs between swaps. A smaller pack may improve balance for overhead or repetitive work; a larger pack may reduce interruptions when the tool is used continuously. Measure completed work with the actual fastener, material and bit rather than borrowing a runtime figure from a saw or grinder.
Circular saws, reciprocating saws and other cutting tools
Cutting load changes sharply with material, blade sharpness, feed pressure and cut length. Plan with a representative number of cuts per battery and keep a charged spare available. A manufacturer comparison made in a 20V MAX tool cannot automatically be transferred to a different saw, blade or material.
Grinders and other sustained-load tools
Sustained high load makes capacity and charging rotation more important, but it also exposes temperature and pack-output differences. Use the tool manual and pack documentation, and avoid treating a larger Ah number as proof that the tool will maintain the same performance until the pack is empty.
Lights, radios and intermittent tools
Low or intermittent loads can make a pack last much longer than a continuous cutting task. Because duty cycle dominates these applications, a measured shift pattern is more informative than a nominal Ah-to-hours conversion.

A practical comparison checklist
- Platform: Is the tool 20V MAX, 60V MAX, 120V MAX or another specified family?
- Capacity: What are the Ah and, where listed, Wh ratings?
- Evidence: Does the runtime claim identify the exact tool, comparison battery and use conditions?
- Charger: Which charger model will be used, and does its manual cover the pack?
- Handling: What are the exact dimensions and weight of each candidate pack?
- Workflow: How many charged packs are needed to cover active work while others charge?
- Documentation: Are the model number, compatibility statement and current manual available from DEWALT?
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming Ah equals hours
Correct the assumption by describing the work in terms of active trigger time, completed cuts or installed fasteners. Keep any estimate tied to that tool and duty cycle.
Using the “up to 6X” statement as a promise
Keep the comparison intact: DCB609 versus DCB201 1.5Ah, in 20V MAX tools, and identified as a DEWALT product claim. Do not apply it to a different battery pair or a different platform.

Buying a pack before checking the platform
Confirm the tool model and supported battery family first. FLEXVOLT’s stated cross-platform compatibility and automatic switching are specific to listed FLEXVOLT models such as DCB609.
Estimating charge time from the charger’s amp number
Use the exact charger and battery manual. The DCB1112’s 12-amp designation identifies the charger; it is not a universal time equation.
Ignoring balance and handling
Capacity comparisons do not substitute for exact pack dimensions and weight. If the tool is used overhead or from a ladder, check those specifications before selecting the largest available pack.
Relying on an old listing
Battery and charger lineups can change. Recheck the model number, compatibility statement and current manual before a purchase or a large crew deployment.

Choose Ah as a capacity and workflow decision, not as a promised runtime in hours. On a shared DEWALT platform, a larger pack can reduce battery swaps, while a smaller pack may improve handling; the right choice depends on measured work demand. Verify compatibility before comparing capacities, preserve the exact conditions behind any DEWALT runtime claim, and use the specific charger manual for charging guidance. When the job matters, a tested rotation of compatible packs is more reliable than a generic Ah-to-hours formula.
