Compare alternate routes by looking at the complete-trip estimated arrival time, confirming that each route actually avoids the work, checking for a second incident or closure, and verifying the disruption with the road authority. Recheck immediately before departure because traffic, closures and ETAs can change. A route that appears shorter on the map is not automatically the route you can use or the one that will get you there sooner.
A practical decision rule
When roadwork delays your journey, evaluate every candidate route against the same five questions:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- What is the current full-trip ETA? Compare the time from your present location to the final destination, not just the congested segment.
- Does the route avoid the affected work? A detour that rejoins the same closed or restricted section has not solved the problem.
- What else is happening on the detour? Look for reported crashes, queues, closures, lane restrictions or another work zone.
- What does the detour cost in distance and complexity? Extra junctions, narrow local roads and difficult turns can make an apparently faster option less practical.
- How fresh and authoritative is the closure information? Use live navigation information together with the road authority responsible for that road.
Choose the option that remains usable after all five checks, then let the navigation service update the estimate while you travel. Do not handle a phone while driving; pull over safely if you need to examine a changed route.

Why a displayed ETA is only one part of the comparison
Navigation services calculate ETAs from traffic estimates, reported incidents, road closures and other changing conditions. Google’s Navigation Connect documentation cautions that “Traffic, road closures, or other external events can affect the ETA.” Different services can therefore produce different routes or arrival times at the same moment, and the same service can change its recommendation minutes later.

Historical traffic can provide context but is not a promise. Google’s Maps explainer notes that historical patterns were reliable indicators for much of the 13 years in which Maps provided traffic data, “but that’s not always the case.” An unusual construction phase, a newly imposed closure, severe weather or an incident can make a usual travel pattern irrelevant.
For that reason, treat an ETA as a time-stamped estimate. Compare it with the route line, closure status and incident reports that produced it. A lower number is useful only when the path is open and avoids a more serious obstruction.
Step 1: Set up a fair, like-for-like comparison
Use the same destination and timing
Enter the exact destination, including the correct entrance or address, in the navigation service. Use the intended departure time or start the comparison close to when you will leave. If one option is calculated for immediate departure and another for a later time, their ETAs are not comparable.
Keep vehicle settings consistent. A route that allows a car but not a larger vehicle, trailer or commercial restriction may not be a valid alternative for your journey. Check any displayed toll, height, weight or access warnings before accepting it.
Record the whole-trip estimate
Write down or note the current ETA and distance for each option. Focus on arrival at the final destination rather than the time to the next interchange. A detour can move quickly at first and then lose its advantage on local streets near the destination.
Open the route details
Expand each option so you can see where it leaves the main road, which roads it uses and where it rejoins the planned trip. Inspect the section around the work zone on the map. If the alternate merely approaches the same closure from another direction, discard it.
Step 2: Verify the disruption with the responsible road authority
Live navigation reports are valuable, but the authority operating the road can provide the formal status of planned works, incidents and closures. The applicable source depends on your jurisdiction and the class of road.

Scotland and Wales
For major roads in Scotland, GOV.UK points travelers to Traffic Scotland. For major roads in Wales, it points to Traffic Wales. These services are the relevant national sources for those networks; local authorities may provide additional information for council-maintained roads.
Other countries and local roads
The government guidance above is UK-specific, and National Highways covers England’s strategic road network rather than every street. In another country, use the transport department, highway agency or local authority responsible for the road you will actually drive. A national service may not show a municipal closure, and a navigation app may not yet reflect a newly signed restriction.
Step 3: Identify what kind of roadwork is causing the delay
Full road closure
A full closure means traffic cannot pass the affected section. Select a route that leaves the closed corridor before the closure and remains away from it until it is safe to rejoin. Do not rely on a route that reaches the closure and expects a turnaround, unless the authority explicitly says local access is permitted.
Lane closure or narrowed carriageway
A lane restriction can leave the road passable while reducing capacity. The best choice may be to remain on the main route if the queue is moving and the detour would add many junctions or use a less suitable road. Reassess the live ETA rather than assuming every lane closure requires a complete bypass.
Work-zone slowdown without a formal closure
Temporary speed limits, contraflow arrangements, merging traffic and construction vehicles can create a delay that changes rapidly. A route that is slower at one moment may recover as the queue clears. Compare the current full-trip ETA and the reported conditions again shortly before leaving.
Closure information is not interchangeable. Official Waze feed documentation distinguishes full road closures from lane closures and hazards; that distinction matters when deciding whether a route is impossible or simply slower.
Step 4: Compare the alternate routes on five useful axes
| Comparison axis | What to inspect | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Current full-trip ETA | Arrival estimate from your present location to the final destination | Which option is faster under the same departure assumptions? |
| Avoidance of the work | Exit point, bypass roads and rejoin point | Does the route stay clear of the closed or restricted section? |
| Other incidents | Crash reports, queues, hazards, closures and additional works | Is the apparent saving likely to disappear at another bottleneck? |
| Distance and complexity | Extra miles, turns, junctions, road width and access restrictions | Can you follow it safely and legally for your vehicle? |
| Information quality | Timestamp, road-authority status and consistency across services | How current and authoritative is the reason for choosing this route? |
This is a practical decision framework, not a universal scoring formula. Give priority to a confirmed closure avoidance over a small ETA difference, especially when the shorter option depends on an uncertain report.
Step 5: Use live navigation features without over-trusting them
Look for the route alternatives panel
Many navigation services display one recommended route and one or more alternatives. Waze Traffic View documentation describes current and historical times for a tracked route, visualized traffic and reports, and an unusual-traffic feed that may show a best alternate route when one is available. That documentation is partner-facing, so a particular feature or alternate is not guaranteed to appear in every consumer app or region.

Compare current and historical context
A historical average for the same time and day can show whether today’s delay is unusual, but it should not override a current closure notice. If the current estimate is much higher than the historical pattern, inspect the incident and closure details before selecting a bypass.
Understand provider differences
Google explains that its routing uses traffic estimates and driver incident reports, including construction and road or lane closures. Its documentation also says that Maps and Waze can calculate different routes as conditions change. Navigation Connect notes that an actual in-app navigation ETA can differ from an API estimate because of selected parameters or changing traffic. Treat a disagreement between services as a prompt to verify the road authority’s status, not as proof that one service is wrong.
Refresh at the right moments
Check the route shortly before departure. If you are delayed at a safe stopping place, refresh again when the roadwork status or queue has materially changed. During the journey, follow an updated instruction only when it can be done safely and legally; never read or operate a device in moving traffic.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesStep 6: Inspect the detour’s geography
Find the true departure and rejoin points
Zoom in on the map and identify the exact point where the alternate leaves the affected road. Then locate where it returns to the main corridor. If the route rejoins before the work zone, it may not avoid the delay. If it rejoins far beyond the works, check whether the additional distance introduces another major junction or town-centre bottleneck.
Check for a second bottleneck
Look for colored traffic segments, incident icons, closure symbols and roadwork markers on the entire detour, not only at its first turn. A route that avoids a motorway queue may divert traffic onto a local road that is already congested or restricted.
Assess suitability for your vehicle and trip
Confirm that the route does not use a prohibited turn, weight-limited bridge, height-restricted structure, private access or road unsuitable for your vehicle. Construction traffic can make a narrow road difficult even when a navigation service lists it as available. If passengers, deliveries or an appointment make reliability more important than the smallest ETA, favor the simpler route when the time difference is modest.
How to choose between a moving delay and a longer bypass
When the work zone remains passable, compare the delay with the detour’s extra distance and complexity. Stay on the main route when the queue is moving, the closure information is uncertain and the alternate has comparable or worse reported traffic. Take a bypass when the authority confirms a full closure, the alternate clearly leaves the affected corridor, and its complete-trip ETA remains better after checking for other incidents.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Comparing only the delay at the work zone
Problem: You compare a ten-minute queue with a detour’s first leg rather than the total journey.
Correction: Compare arrival times from the same starting point to the same destination, then inspect the complete path.
Assuming a different-looking line avoids the closure
Problem: The route circles around the queue but rejoins the closed section or reaches another restricted point.

What live data can—and cannot—tell you
Live traffic systems combine several inputs, including traffic estimates and incident reports. National Highways says it works with Google, Waze and TomTom, which use its traffic data for the strategic road network in England. That cooperation improves the information pipeline but does not mean every local road, report or closure appears instantly in every service.
Waze’s unusual-traffic and closure documentation describes what its feeds can represent, not a guarantee that every consumer display contains every event. Google’s documentation similarly explains that external events can change an ETA and that actual navigation results can differ from API estimates. Reports may be delayed, incomplete or superseded by a new traffic-management phase.
Use the services as decision aids, keep the authority’s status in view, and allow for uncertainty when the consequences of a wrong turn are high. No source cited here promises complete or immediate coverage of every road.

Suppose a planned project creates a queue on a strategic road and your navigation service offers two alternatives. First, determine whether the project has a full closure or a lane restriction. Next, trace each alternative beyond the first junction: one may bypass the work entirely while the other may return to the same corridor. Check the authority’s project or incident notice for expected journey-time effects, then compare each route’s current full-trip ETA and any second incident shown on the map.
If the closure is confirmed, select the route that stays outside the closed section even if it is longer. If traffic is moving through an open lane and the bypass has a reported queue, the main route may be preferable. Refresh the comparison just before departure because the balance can reverse as traffic-management stages or queues change. This example illustrates the method; it is not a prediction for a particular project or road.
When to seek a different source or postpone the decision
Use another official channel or delay a non-essential departure when the navigation display and authority notice conflict about whether a road is open, when a closure has just been announced, or when severe congestion makes the ETA unstable. For England’s strategic network, consult National Highways information; for major Scottish or Welsh roads, use Traffic Scotland or Traffic Wales as directed by GOV.UK. For local roads, check the relevant council or road operator.
If you cannot verify that an alternate is open and suitable, do not improvise through restricted streets. A small apparent time saving is not worth entering a signed closure, an unsuitable road or an unsafe turning movement.

Key takeaways for reliable route comparisons
- Compare complete-trip ETAs under identical departure assumptions.
- Confirm that the alternate actually avoids the work and does not rejoin the affected section.
- Distinguish a full closure from a lane closure or a moving work-zone slowdown.
- Check for another incident, queue or restriction on the detour.
- Use the road authority’s information alongside live navigation data.
- Remember that historical patterns and current ETAs are estimates, not guarantees.
- Recheck shortly before departure and only update the route from a safe stopped position.
