For decorative PVC pipe, you can add color with solvent dye mixed into PVC cleaner or primer, or use a plastic-specific primer and paint. The dye method adds little thickness at joints, but its solvent chemistry and results can vary by product; paint is a more familiar alternative with preparation and cure requirements set by its manufacturer.
What you need to know before coloring PVC
Sean Michael Ragan’s Make: tutorial describes mixing solvent dye—also called fuel dye—with PVC cleaner and applying the mixture to the outside of pipe or fittings. The project page was originally published on December 18, 2012, and displays an update date of July 15, 2022. Its recipes are examples from that project, not standardized formulas guaranteed to work with every dye, cleaner, pipe color, or formulation. Check the actual cleaner or primer label rather than assuming all products have the same ingredients. Read the Make: tutorial.

The tutorial’s explanation of the solvent has changed: it says the earlier claim that THF was the important ingredient was probably incorrect. It relays unconfirmed advice that MEK may be the more active penetrating solvent, but the author says he has not confirmed that experimentally. Treat the mechanism as unsettled, and follow the current product label and safety information.
Choose between dye and paint
| Consideration | Solvent dye with PVC cleaner | Plastic-specific primer and paint |
|---|---|---|
| Coloring before assembly | The Make: tutorial says staining avoids the added thickness of a paint film, which can matter at joints. | Paint adds a coating; account for it where components fit together. |
| Preparation | Use the product specified by the tutorial and check its label; no general prep specification is established for all cleaner formulations. | Preparation depends on the product. Rust-Oleum and FORMUFIT give separate instructions for their respective products and guides. |
| Drying or curing | The tutorial says about an hour is generally enough under the conditions it describes; that is not a universal cure time. | Follow the specific primer and paint instructions. Rust-Oleum’s stated times apply to its Specialty Plastic Primer Spray, not all coatings. |
| Durability evidence | The tutorial gives qualitative observations, not a controlled durability test. | The cited manufacturer guidance provides application instructions, not a controlled comparison with dye. |
The Make: author says paint can flake or wear with handling and weather, but this is a qualitative account rather than a head-to-head test. Furniture-grade PVC may come in limited integral colors, and fittings may not match. No controlled comparison establishes which approach lasts longer across products and conditions.

How to color PVC with solvent dye
Prepare the dye mixture
Use solvent dye and PVC cleaner as described in the tutorial, with a volumetric pipette or other way to measure small volumes. Its quantities below are examples for a four-ounce can of cleaner, not universal color formulas:
| Example color | Dye amount per four ounces of cleaner |
|---|---|
| Red | 1 mL red |
| Orange | ½ mL red and ½ mL yellow |
| Yellow | 1 mL yellow |
| Green | ½ mL yellow and ½ mL blue |
| Blue | 1 mL blue |
| Indigo | ⅔ mL blue and ⅓ mL red |
| Violet | ½ mL blue and ½ mL red |
| Brown | ⅓ mL each red, yellow, and blue |
| “Black” | The example produced very strong blue, using ½ ounce (15 mL) blue dye per four ounces of cleaner. |
- Measure the dye into the cleaner, close the container, and gently shake it for about 15 seconds, following the Make: project method.
- Set fittings in a holder if useful. Apply the mixture generously with the can’s built-in applicator, rotating the fitting or pipe to cover the circumference.
- Smooth streaks and drips before they dry. The tutorial cautions that a drip that has dissolved some PVC polymer is harder to remove than a simple spill.
- Leave the piece to dry on a safe surface. The tutorial says about an hour is generally enough under the conditions it describes; allow for product and environmental differences rather than treating that as a guaranteed cure time.
Safety when using solvent dye
The Make: tutorial instructs users to work in a well-ventilated workspace and wear nitrile gloves and goggles when handling the solvent or dye. Follow the current labels and safety information for the exact products in use; the tutorial’s discussion of THF and MEK does not establish a universal cleaner formulation or solvent mechanism.

Rust-Oleum Specialty Plastic Primer Spray
Rust-Oleum lists PVC among the plastics suitable for its Specialty Plastic Primer Spray, which is intended to prepare plastic for Rust-Oleum topcoats. Its support page, updated January 6, 2026, says to wipe new plastic with paint thinner. For aged or weathered surfaces, remove loose material, wash with soap and water, rinse, and dry; glossy surfaces may need sanding. Work outdoors or in a ventilated area, apply one thin coat, and follow the product’s current instructions. Rust-Oleum states that this primer is touch-dry in 20–30 minutes, handleable in one hour, fully dry in 24 hours, and reaches maximum adhesion in 5–7 days; those times apply to this product, not paint generally. See Rust-Oleum’s product instructions.

FORMUFIT painting guidance
FORMUFIT recommends cleaning PVC, lightly scuffing it with fine 200–300 grit sandpaper, wiping away dust, and applying thin coats of plastic-specific paint. Its guide recommends allowing at least seven days for full cure before putting weight or force on painted areas. These are recommendations from its guide; use the instructions for the specific coating you buy. Read FORMUFIT’s PVC painting guide.

Take care with dark colors outdoors
Tamlyn advises light-colored, high-reflectance paint for its PVC products. It warns that dark paint may absorb excess solar heat and contribute to warping, distortion, blistering, or peeling, particularly in direct sun and hot climates. This warning and Tamlyn’s warranty position are specific to its products, not a universal rule for every PVC pipe or coating. Check the pipe and coating manufacturers’ guidance before using a dark finish outdoors. See Tamlyn’s technical library.
