Some white oaks can be sown in fall; other oaks need a period of cold, moist storage first. Plant about ½ to 1 inch deep, protect the seedling from weeds and animals, and use local guidance for timing because species and climate matter.
Choose an oak and a planting site first
Start with an oak species suited to the site’s climate, soil, and available space. Acorns from local or nearby trees are generally preferable: California guidance notes that locally native oaks are more likely to fit the planting microclimate. If buying a seedling instead, ask the nursery where and at what elevation its seed acorns were collected. University of California guidance
Look for a sunny spot where the young tree will have room to grow and where you can manage weeds and protect it from animals. Check local planting advice for the species before deciding whether to sow outdoors in fall, use a container, or store the acorn until spring.
When and how to collect acorns
Collect mature acorns in the season when they begin to fall, which varies by oak and region. In California, UC guidance describes early fall as a general collection period: acorns often begin turning from green to brown, and mature caps release easily. An acorn that is dark green and firmly attached to its cap may be immature. UC guidance

Acorns picked directly from a tree are often in better condition than those that have been on the ground and dried or damaged. If gathering fallen acorns, choose firm, full ones and discard those that are small, cracked, unusually light, or hollow. Get permission before collecting on land you do not own or control.
A water-float test can help screen a batch: sound acorns often sink, while floaters are more likely to be damaged or unfilled. It is not a definitive viability test, and recommendations can vary by species, so do not rely on it alone. Iowa State Extension
Keep acorns moist, and match storage to the species
Do not let collected acorns dry out or overheat. For short-term storage, place them in a plastic bag or reusable container with moist peat moss, vermiculite, or cactus mix. Leave the container slightly open for air exchange and check it for mold or sprouting. If mold appears, rinse the acorns; if a root emerges, plant promptly so it does not grow long in storage. Cold-moist stratification—keeping an acorn cool and damp for a period—depends on oak type. These schedules are recommendations from particular extension sources, not a universal calendar:

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Oak type | Guidance | Source and context |
|---|---|---|
| White oak (Quercus alba) and swamp white oak (Quercus bicolor) | Sow in fall; the acorns germinate after sowing. | Iowa State Extension |
| Bur oak | 30–60 days of cold-moist stratification. | Iowa State Extension |
| Red and pin oaks | 30–45 days of cold-moist stratification. | Iowa State Extension |
| Red oaks | 4–8 weeks of cold-moist storage. | Mississippi State University Extension |
Before refrigerating an acorn, identify the oak if possible and check a local extension service’s recommendations. The schedules differ, and the correct choice depends on species and location.
Plant the acorn at the right depth
Planting depth recommendations cluster around ½ to 1 inch, but orientation instructions vary with the acorn’s condition and the guidance being followed. Iowa State recommends sowing ½ to 1 inch deep. Kentucky’s white-oak project says to place the pointed end down and cover with no more than ½ inch of soil. UC guidance also permits laying an ungerminated acorn on its side. If a root has already emerged, handle it gently and orient it downward without bending or breaking it. Follow species-specific local advice when available rather than treating one orientation as universal.
- Loosen the soil at the planting spot and remove competing weeds.
- Place the acorn at the locally recommended depth, using the species and whether it has sprouted to guide its orientation.
- Cover it with soil and water after planting.
- Keep the soil moist when rainfall is insufficient, without leaving the acorn waterlogged.
Care for the young oak
Reduce weed competition around the seedling and protect it from rodents and other animals that may eat or damage it. A protective sleeve or guard can help where browsing or other damage is likely; UC guidance describes a 12- to 18-inch sleeve. If growing in a container, a deep tree seedling pot or long tube can accommodate the oak’s deep-growing taproot. UC propagation guidance

For California planting, UC recommends sowing after the first rains have soaked the soil, generally from early November through early March. That window is regional, not a nationwide calendar; use local guidance elsewhere. UC guidance

How do I germinate acorns?
Use a mature, sound acorn; keep it from drying out; provide the species-appropriate fall sowing or cold-moist storage; then plant it at the recommended depth. A successful start also depends on suitable site conditions and protection from competition and animals.
Do all acorns need to be refrigerated?
No. Iowa State’s guidance calls for fall sowing of white and swamp white oak acorns, while it recommends cold-moist stratification for bur, red, and pin oaks. Consult local guidance for the identified species before choosing a storage schedule.

Can I use a failed float test to rule out every acorn?
No. Floating is a screening clue, not a conclusive test of viability. Species and source recommendations can differ, so consider the acorn’s condition and the relevant local advice too.
Is a forestry nursery’s acorn-loss figure a prediction for my garden?
No. The USDA Forest Service reports that in large-scale upland oak regeneration and nursery production, “up to 30% of the acorns will be lost due to poor germination and another 40-60% will be discarded during seedling grading.” That production context does not establish an expected failure rate for a home gardener.
