The safest way to clean a wooden spoon is to wash it promptly by hand with warm or hot soapy water, rinse it, and dry it immediately. Avoid soaking and treat the dishwasher as off-limits unless the manufacturer specifically says the spoon is dishwasher-safe. Proper drying matters as much as washing because prolonged moisture and heat can warp, roughen, crack, or split wood.
Clean a wooden spoon promptly by hand with warm or hot soapy water, rinse it well, and dry it immediately and completely. Do not leave it soaking, and do not put it in the dishwasher unless the manufacturer specifically says it is dishwasher-safe. This routine removes food residue while limiting the swelling, warping, roughness, and cracking caused by prolonged moisture and heat.

How to clean a wooden spoon
- Remove food promptly. Rinse or wipe the spoon soon after cooking, before sauces, starches, or other food residues dry onto the wood.
- Wash it by hand. Use warm or hot water, mild dish soap, and a soft, non-abrasive sponge. Clean the bowl, edges, handle, grooves, and any rough or joined areas where food may collect.
- Do not soak it. Do not leave the spoon submerged in a sink or container of water. Wood absorbs moisture, and extended exposure can make it swell, warp, roughen, crack, or split.
- Rinse thoroughly. Remove all soap and loosened food residue under clean running water.
- Dry it immediately. Towel-dry the entire spoon, then leave it in a dry, well-ventilated place if it needs additional time to finish drying. Store it only when the wood is completely dry.
Keep clean wooden spoons away from prolonged heat, direct sunlight, and persistently damp storage areas. A spoon that is repeatedly left wet in a utensil crock or drawer is more likely to develop unpleasant odors and surface damage.

Ordinary wooden spoons should be hand-washed by default. A dishwasher combines prolonged water exposure, high heat, and strong detergent—all of which can dry, roughen, warp, crack, or split wood. Some specially made utensils may be labeled dishwasher-safe, but the product’s care instructions take precedence. Do not assume that a dishwasher-safe label for a handle, coating, or other utensil material applies to every wooden spoon.

How to clean a wooden spoon after raw meat, poultry, seafood, or eggs
Wash the spoon promptly with hot, soapy water after it touches raw meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, or their juices. Rinse away the soap and dry the spoon completely before storing it or using it with ready-to-eat food. During preparation, keep utensils that have touched raw ingredients separate from utensils used for cooked or ready-to-eat food to reduce cross-contamination.
Soap-and-water cleaning is the essential step. Do not treat oiling, lemon, vinegar, boiling, or another home treatment as a substitute for washing, and do not claim that a household remedy sterilizes wood. If the spoon remains visibly contaminated, develops uncleanable damage, or cannot be cleaned thoroughly because of deep cracks or splits, replace it.

Removing odors and light stains
Normal hand-washing is usually enough, but a persistent food odor or light surface stain can be treated with a brief application of lemon juice. You can also use a small amount of white vinegar, or rub the surface gently with lemon and coarse salt. These are surface-care options, not sterilization methods.
- Apply lemon juice, or gently rub the affected area with lemon and a little coarse salt.
- Keep the treatment brief; do not leave the spoon submerged in the acidic liquid.
- Rinse the spoon thoroughly with clean water.
- Towel-dry it immediately and let it finish drying completely.
- If the wood now looks dry, condition it with food-safe mineral oil as described below.
Avoid steel wool, aggressive scouring, bleach, and harsh cleaners for routine care. They can damage the surface or leave a product residue that is unsuitable for a food-contact utensil. Use only a cleaning procedure specifically approved by the spoon’s manufacturer if unusual disinfection is required.
When and how to oil a wooden spoon
Wooden spoons do not need oil after every wash. Condition one when the wood looks dull or dry, feels rough, or begins absorbing water unusually quickly. Use a product explicitly labeled food-safe mineral oil, unless the manufacturer specifies a different treatment for that particular wood or finish.

Food-safe mineral oil is maintenance, not cleaning. It does not replace washing with soap and water. Avoid ordinary cooking oils such as olive or peanut oil for long-term conditioning unless the manufacturer specifically directs you to use one; they can become rancid. Do not use ordinary wood-finishing oil or an unlabeled industrial product on a utensil that touches food.
For readers whose spoons are beginning to look dry, food-grade mineral oil for wooden utensils is the appropriate type of maintenance product to look for; check the label and the spoon manufacturer’s instructions before applying it.

When to replace a wooden spoon
Replace the spoon if it has any of the following:
- deep cracks or splits;
- persistent or dangerous splinters;
- loose pieces;
- severe warping that affects use;
- mold-like growth that cannot be completely removed; or
- deep grooves or crevices that prevent reliable cleaning.
There is no universal crack-size measurement that determines when a spoon must be discarded. The practical test is whether the surface can be cleaned thoroughly and remains safe to handle. If damage creates a place for food and moisture to remain, or if the spoon continues to shed splinters, replacement is the sensible choice.
