The right method depends on the furniture’s material and finish: cushions, wicker, and delicate wood need more care than many hard surfaces.
Start by identifying the material
Check the frame, weave, finish or coating, and any cushion fabric care labels before choosing a cleaner or tool. Follow the furniture or fabric maker’s instructions if they differ from these general steps. Remove loose pollen before washing
On compatible hard surfaces, use a soft brush or cloth to lift off dry pollen. For fabric, gently brush or vacuum it away first. Starting dry helps avoid smearing loose pollen into textured surfaces or fabric. Use a gentle touch, especially on woven or finished materials.
Wash stubborn pollen according to the surface
Metal, plastic, and compatible hard surfaces
Mix mild soap with warm water and clean with a soft brush or sponge. Scrub gently where pollen remains, then rinse thoroughly with a gentle flow of clean water and dry the surface. The general guidance supports this approach for compatible hard surfaces; check the furniture’s care instructions before applying water or soap.

Synthetic wicker
POLYWOOD recommends mild dish soap and a soft-bristle brush for synthetic wicker, followed by clean water and drying. Use the brush gently so it reaches the weave without rough handling. See POLYWOOD’s synthetic-wicker care instructions.
Natural wicker and delicate wood
Avoid treating these materials like durable, flat plastic or metal. Do not use high-pressure washing: it may be unsuitable for wicker or delicate wood. Use only the cleaning and rinsing approach allowed by the maker’s care instructions.

Cushions and other fabric
Clean cushions separately from the furniture frame. After brushing or vacuuming off loose pollen, use gentle cleaning appropriate to the fabric, rinse if its care instructions permit, and let it dry completely. Check the fabric label before trying stronger treatments or machine washing.

Where the material permits, rinse away soap residue gently rather than using forceful spray. Dry the furniture after cleaning, and allow cushion fabric to dry completely. Do not assume every material or finish can tolerate the same amount of water.

What to avoid
- Do not choose a cleaner or brush before identifying the material and checking its care instructions.
- Do not scrub aggressively; use a soft brush or sponge suited to the surface.
- Do not use pressure washing as a universal pollen-removal method, especially on wicker or delicate wood.
- Do not use the frame’s cleaning method on cushions without checking the fabric’s care label.
