Clean resin, pitch, and gum from blades and bits with a cleaner labeled for the tool, then dry the parts and inspect them before use. Disconnect the machine from power and remove the blade or bit where the tool allows. For sticky buildup, a purpose-made cleaner can restore a smoother cut—but cleaning does not repair chipped carbide or prove an edge is sharp.

Why blades and bits need cleaning

Resin, pitch, and gum can collect on woodworking cutters, particularly when cutting softwoods. The buildup increases friction and heat, which can contribute to burning and make a cutting edge seem dull. Woodcraft also notes that residue can slow cutting and discolor wood. Cleaning may address buildup, but it cannot fix a damaged edge. Woodcraft’s circular-saw-blade cleaning guide recommends checking blades often and keeping them clean.

A safe, practical cleaning process

  1. Stop and isolate the machine. Switch it off, disconnect it from power, and remove the blade or bit if the tool permits. Handle the cutting edges carefully.
  2. Remove loose dust. Brush away sawdust before applying cleaner so you can reach the sticky residue.
  3. Use a compatible cleaner according to its label. Choose a product whose maker lists the tool and residue you need to clean, and follow its current label and safety data sheet for handling.
  4. Give the cleaner its stated dwell time. For Boeshield Blade & Bit, the maker directs users to wet the surface, wait 30–60 seconds, and wipe. For heavy gum, apply another coat and scrub with a brass-bristle brush.
  5. Dry, inspect, and store. Wipe the part dry, inspect the cutting edges and any bearings, then store it so edges cannot strike one another.

Choose a method that fits the tool

Option Listed tools or compatibility Key directions or limits
Boeshield Blade & Bit cleaner Saw blades, router bits, drill bits, knives, planer blades, and tool tops, according to the maker. Wet the surface, wait 30–60 seconds, and wipe. For heavy gum, repeat and use a brass-bristle brush. For rust, Boeshield specifies Rust Free followed by T-9 protection. Manufacturer directions.
Trend U*CLEAN/500 Saw blades, router bits, drill bits, planer blades, files, and chisels, according to the maker. The maker says the formula includes a rust inhibitor but recommends wiping the tool as dry as possible. Manufacturer FAQ.
MicroJIG BLADECLEAN system Circular blades up to 12 inches; router-bit shanks of 1/4, 1/2, 6 mm, 8 mm, and 12 mm, according to the maker. Remove a bearing before submerging a bearing-guided bit in cleaning solution. Manufacturer instructions.

These are manufacturer-listed directions and compatibility details, not independent comparative test results. They do not establish that one option cleans better than another. Check the product’s current label and compatibility information before use.

Take extra care with router-bit bearings

Do not assume a bearing-guided router bit can be immersed as assembled. MicroJIG says to remove the bearing before submerging the bit in cleaning solution. If you cannot remove the bearing or the cleaner’s instructions do not address it, avoid immersion and use a method allowed by the tool and cleaner makers.

Dry, inspect, and protect the cutter

Wipe the tool dry after cleaning. Drying and corrosion protection are product-specific: Trend recommends wiping tools as dry as possible despite its formula’s rust inhibitor. For rusty surfaces, Boeshield directs users to Rust Free followed by T-9 protection. Do not treat either instruction as a universal chemical procedure; follow the cleaner and protectant labels.

Before reinstalling a part, check the edge for chips or cracks and the router-bit bearing for damage or rough movement. Cleaning removes residue; it does not restore damaged carbide or establish that a cutter is sharp. Store blades and bits separately or with edge protection so they cannot knock together. Woodcraft warns that impact can chip or crack carbide. Woodcraft’s storage and maintenance guidance discusses protecting cutting edges.
