If you find mold in an outdoor grill, remove the visible growth and residue, clean the surfaces using the appliance maker’s directions, and follow its restart instructions. Weber advises scraping affected grill surfaces and running the grill on high for at least 15 minutes before grilling. That is Weber’s guidance for its grills—not a universal cleaning cycle for pellet, electric, or indoor smokers, which may have different parts and cleaning limits.

Can you use a grill or smoker that has mold?

Do not cook on it until you have removed the visible growth and cleaned the affected surfaces. Mold can grow where moisture and food or grease residue remain, particularly after an appliance has been stored. Dead mold can still trigger allergic reactions, so killing it without physically removing it is not enough, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

What to do next depends on the appliance. For its grills, Weber advises scraping mold from the surfaces and running the grill on high for at least 15 minutes before grilling. Traeger recommends inspecting its grill grates, firepot, and interior walls after storage and cleaning before use. Do not apply either procedure automatically to a different model.

How to clean mold from a smoker or grill

  1. Turn it off and let it cool. For a powered pellet grill, Traeger directs users to turn the grill off and disconnect its power cord before maintenance. Wait until ashes are cold before checking the grease and ash keg.
  2. Remove loose residue and visible growth. Use a suitable scraper or non-wire brush on accessible surfaces, following the owner’s manual. Traeger warns against wire-bristle brushes because loose bristles can end up in food. For mold cleanup, the CDC recommends an N95 respirator, gloves, and goggles. Its advice is general household mold-cleanup guidance, not a grill-specific procedure. People with allergies, immune suppression, underlying lung disease, asthma, or COPD should not take part in cleanup, according to the CDC.
  3. Clean with a method approved for that model and surface. Follow the appliance manual and cleaner label, including any directions about removing parts. For Traeger grill interiors, its cleaner directions call for scraping, spraying, waiting 10 minutes, scrubbing with a non-wire brush or non-abrasive pad, and wiping with a damp soft cloth. For the GE Profile Smart Indoor Smoker, GE specifies mild soap and water or vinegar and water for certain surfaces, prohibits several abrasive and strong cleaners, and cautions against spraying the back wall. These instructions are model-specific, not interchangeable.
  4. Dry the surfaces and removable parts. Let them dry before covering or storing the appliance. Moisture and leftover residue create conditions in which mold can grow.
  5. Restart only as the manufacturer directs. Use a high-heat cleaning cycle only if the appliance maker permits it, and follow its stated procedure. The available guidance does not establish one safe heating time and temperature for all smokers and grills.

Why cleaning steps differ by appliance

A charcoal or gas grill, a pellet grill, and an indoor electric smoker do not necessarily share the same finishes, heating elements, filters, removable parts, or cleaner restrictions. Check the manual for your exact model before scraping, disassembling, applying liquid, or heating it. USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service guidance is to follow the cooker manufacturer’s directions and use cooking equipment made of materials approved for food contact; it does not provide a mold-remediation procedure for grills.

Should you use bleach or disinfectant?

Do not make bleach the default treatment for a grill or smoker. The EPA says routine use of biocides such as chlorine bleach is generally not recommended for mold cleanup; even when mold is dead, it still needs to be removed. The EPA also warns never to mix bleach with cleaners containing ammonia. The EPA’s guidance is general mold-cleanup advice, not approval to use bleach on a food-contact cooking surface. Follow the appliance manual and product label instead. CDC bleach guidance for household mold cleanup likewise does not establish bleach as suitable for a smoker or grill.

How to reduce the chance of mold returning

  • Clean food and grease residue before storing the appliance.
  • Let grates, removable components, and interior surfaces dry before covering or storing them.
  • Protect outdoor grills from rain and snow, and store them away from precipitation. Traeger recommends using a compatible cover; avoid trapping moisture underneath it.
  • After a long storage period, inspect the grates and interior before use. For a Traeger pellet grill, its guidance also calls for checking the firepot and interior walls.
