Start with a cooled rack, warm or hot soapy water, and a soft cloth or sponge. If grease remains, soak the rack, try a baking-soda paste if its care instructions allow it, or use a compatible appliance degreaser for stubborn residue. Check your oven manual before using abrasives or a dishwasher, and remove racks before a self-clean cycle unless the manual for your model explicitly says otherwise.
Before you clean: check the rack and oven instructions
Let the oven and racks cool completely. Remove the rack according to the oven manual, and check its care guidance before choosing a cleaner or tool. Rack finishes and designs differ, so a method suitable for one rack may not be suitable for another.

- Do not leave racks in a self-cleaning oven unless the manual for your exact model permits it. Bosch warns that its racks may lose their shiny finish and glide poorly; NEFF warns of permanent damage.
- Do not assume a rack is dishwasher-safe. NEFF says most oven racks are dishwasher-safe, while Thermador says its flat and telescopic racks should not be washed in a dishwasher. Follow your model’s manual.
- Check before using abrasive pads or steel wool. Whirlpool and Bosch mention steel-wool options for harder-to-remove stains, but the rack’s finish and its care instructions should determine whether that is appropriate.
Method 1: Wash with hot, soapy water
For light grease or routine cleaning, wash the cooled, removed rack with hot or warm water and dish soap. Use a soft cloth or sponge, then rinse away soap residue and dry the rack thoroughly before reinstalling it. Bosch US and Whirlpool both recommend a soap-and-water approach with a cloth or sponge.

Method 2: Soak in hot, soapy water
A soak gives stuck-on grease time to loosen before you scrub. Use a tub or other container large enough to cover the rack. Add hot water and dish soap or washing-up liquid, then soak the rack before wiping it clean with a cloth or sponge.

Soaking times vary with the rack and soil level: Whirlpool describes at least two hours or overnight, depending on how dirty the rack is; Bosch UK recommends around two hours or longer. If using a bathtub, put old towels underneath the rack to help protect the tub surface from scratches. Rinse and dry the rack thoroughly afterward.
Method 3: Apply a baking-soda paste
Samsung suggests mixing baking soda and water into a paste for greasy food residue. Apply it to the residue, then wipe or gently scrub with a suitable cloth or sponge. Treat this as an option, not a universal approval for every rack finish: check the rack’s care instructions first, and rinse off residue before drying the rack.

Method 4: Use an appliance degreaser for stubborn residue
If grease remains after washing or soaking, a degreaser intended for appliances may help. NEFF recommends spraying its appliance degreaser on racks in a tub of hot water and soaking ideally for at least six hours or overnight; it advises wiping remaining residue with a soft sponge or old toothbrush. Bosch UK also recommends its tested and approved degreaser for stubborn stains.
Those are manufacturer-specific instructions, not blanket approval for every cleaner or rack. Check both the oven manual and the degreaser label before use, and follow their directions. Rinse away cleaner residue as appropriate and dry the rack thoroughly before returning it to the oven. A small brush or old toothbrush can help reach corners.

Choose a method that suits the rack
The manufacturer instructions support several approaches, but they do not provide a controlled head-to-head test proving one method is fastest or most effective for every rack. Choose based on how stubborn the residue is, how much time you can allow for soaking, whether the rack fits in a suitable container, and what its care instructions permit.
- For light grease, begin with the hot, soapy hand-wash.
- For residue that does not wipe away, try a hot, soapy soak before adding more scrubbing.
- Use baking-soda paste or an appliance degreaser only if the rack instructions and product label are compatible.
- Do not substitute a dishwasher or self-clean cycle for hand-cleaning unless your model’s manual allows it.
If the rack is hard to slide after cleaning
Lubrication guidance depends on rack construction. Bosch suggests a small amount of vegetable oil on rack edges; Thermador specifies high-temperature food-grade lubricant for telescopic slides. Follow the manual for your model, including any instruction to remove excess lubricant.
