The safe way to use a clay pot is to identify its exact model, finish, and approved heat source, then follow that maker’s instructions. “Clay pot” can mean a porous unglazed vessel, a glazed oven roaster, stovetop-rated cookware, or an insert that must stay in a particular electric cooker; their preparation and care rules are not interchangeable.
Choose the pot for your heat source
Do not infer compatibility from the word “clay” or from another pot’s instructions. Confirm the exact product is approved for the appliance you intend to use.

| Clay-lined electric-cooker insert | The cited manual restricts the insert to the supplied cooker base, not a stove or oven, and warns against dry heating. | That the pot is an appliance component rather than standalone cookware; never transfer liquid quantities or settings to another model. Check finish, capacity, and food use
- Glaze: A fully glazed interior is generally simpler to wash. Porous unglazed clay can absorb water, oils, and detergent and may require soaking before cooking.
- Combination finishes: A pot may have a glazed base and unglazed lid, so one care rule may not cover the whole vessel.
- Form and capacity: Match dimensions, volume, lid fit, and shape to the dishes you cook. The available guidance does not establish a universally best size or a neutral performance ranking.
- Food-contact documentation: Buy cookware explicitly sold for food use and request documentation for the exact product and market when needed. Decorative ceramics are not automatically cooking vessels.
How to prepare and season a clay pot
Start with the manual and the surface
- Record the manufacturer, model, finish, and approved heat source.
- Read the supplied care sheet before soaking, oiling, heating, or placing the pot on an appliance.
- Hand-wash a new vessel as directed. Claypots.eu says its unglazed cookware should be soaked in cold water for 15–30 minutes before use; its glazed cookware should be washed but does not need soaking. See the maker’s first-use instructions.
There is no supported universal seasoning recipe. Claypots.eu’s separate guide presents soaking and slow heating for a beginner method, with other techniques described as optional, while Chamba Imports describes filling its cookware three-quarters with water and heating it in an oven for 30 minutes at 400°F. Those are product-specific examples, not a single rule for every clay pot. Follow the instructions that came with yours; do not assume oil rubbing, rice water, milk, or a long soak is required. Use gradual temperature changes
For the Claypots.eu oven roasters and the Eurita roaster covered by the cited guidance, place the pot in a cold oven and let the oven and vessel warm together. Keep a hot pot away from cold counters, cold water, and abrupt cooling. Chamba Imports gives the same thermal-shock warning even though its own pieces may be used on a stovetop. These directions apply to those makers’ products; another model may specify different limits.

Stovetop and electric-range decisions
- Use a burner only when the exact cookware is explicitly rated for direct stovetop heat.
- If the maker recommends a heat diffuser for an electric range, use the specified type; a diffuser cannot make an oven-only roaster safe on a burner.
- Never place an electric-cooker insert on a stove or in an oven when its manual restricts it to the supplied base.
- Do not dry-heat a clay insert or cookware when the instructions require liquid.
Cleaning and storing clay cookware
Unglazed, porous surfaces
Let the vessel cool completely. Claypots.eu recommends hot water and a brush rather than detergent for its porous unglazed ware because clay can retain soap. Rinse away residue, then dry the pot fully before storage; allow air to circulate around a lid rather than sealing damp pieces together. Claypots.eu cleaning guidance
Glazed surfaces and mixed-finish pots
Glazed pieces tolerate ordinary washing more readily, although Claypots.eu recommends hand washing. For Eurita’s roaster, follow the model-specific distinction between its glazed base and unglazed lid instead of treating both parts identically. A stubborn-residue method such as baking soda is documented for that maker’s roaster only; do not generalize it to every clay vessel. Eurita cleaning instructions

Food-contact safety: what the evidence does and does not show
Claypots.eu says IBA București independently tested lead and cadmium migration in its natural, semi-glazed, and fully glazed cookware finishes. The maker identifies reports 3050, 3051, and 3052, dated 22 July 2025, and says the tested line passed the cited EU limits. It reports that its highest lead reading was about 4% of the permitted level. These are company-reported results for that tested product line, not an industry-wide statistic and not proof about unrelated pots or decorative ceramics. Claypots.eu safety and materials information
A practical first-use checklist
- Confirm the exact model and heat-source approval.
- Identify every glazed and unglazed surface.
- Read the maker’s soaking, liquid, temperature, and support-surface requirements.
- Wash as directed; soak only when the maker calls for it.
- Begin in a cold oven when the instructions require gradual heating.
- Prevent thermal shock during cooking, serving, cooling, and washing.
- Cool fully, clean with the finish-appropriate method, and dry porous clay completely.
- Store with airflow and retain the manual for future use.
The Bottom Line
Buy for the approved heat source and exact model, not the generic label “clay pot.” Glazed and unglazed surfaces need different preparation and cleaning, and gradual heating plus full cooling protects against thermal shock. When instructions conflict with general advice, the manufacturer’s directions for that pot control.
