How to Clean and Protect Outdoor Patio Furniture

Identify your patio furniture’s material and finish before cleaning. This guide covers gentle methods for aluminum, wicker, teak and cushions, plus covers, storage and common mistakes.

The safest way to clean patio furniture is to identify its material and finish first, then use the mildest method its care label or manufacturer permits. Mild soap and water work for many surfaces, but not every finish tolerates the same cleaner, brush, rinse or pressure. Clean off loose debris, remove any soap residue when the instructions call for rinsing, and let the furniture dry before covering or storing it.

Use the material guide below to choose a starting point—not to override product-specific care instructions. Outdoor frames, tabletops and cushion fabrics can have different requirements, even when they are part of the same furniture set.

Identify the material before choosing a cleaner

Check the care label, product manual or manufacturer’s current care guide. Look for both the material and its finish: unfinished teak, for example, behaves differently from finished teak, and a powder-coated aluminum frame has a coating that can be damaged by abrasive tools or harsh chemicals. If you cannot identify the finish, avoid experimenting with bleach, solvents, abrasive pads, oils or sealers; ask the furniture maker what it allows.

Start by removing leaves, dust and other loose debris. On compatible surfaces, a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush and mild soap mixed with water are a practical starting point. Rinse if the instructions permit or require it, and dry the surface as directed. KETTLER USA’s materials guide, Arhaus’s product-care guidance, POLYWOOD’s care instructions and WickerPark’s maintenance guide all emphasize that care depends on the material and that gentle tools are preferable for the surfaces they address.

A furniture set may combine several materials, so do not assume the frame, tabletop and cushions share a cleaning method. KETTLER USA’s materials guide distinguishes categories such as metal, wood, wicker and cushion fabrics, while Gloster organizes its care resources by material. If a piece combines a woven seat with a metal frame, for example, follow the instructions for each part and avoid letting a fabric cleaner or wood treatment spread onto an incompatible surface.

Material or component Care considerations Important limit
Powder-coated aluminum Soft brush or cloth, mild soap and water; rinse where permitted and dry. Abrasives and harsh cleaners can damage aluminum or its powder coating.
Synthetic wicker or performance weave Brush or vacuum loose debris, then use mild soapy water and a soft brush or cloth; rinse and dry. Pressure-washing directions differ by maker; do not assume it is safe.
Unfinished natural teak Its color naturally weathers from warm golden tones toward silvery grey outdoors. Patina is a normal change, not necessarily damage. Confirm finish before treating.
Finished teak Follow the furniture maker’s finish-specific maintenance directions. Uncovered exposure can fade or wear a finished surface; do not apply oil or sealer without approval.
Outdoor cushions and fabric Brush or vacuum loose soil, blot stains, follow the fabric label, rinse residue and air-dry. Cleaning solutions and bleach directions are fabric-specific; do not use a dryer unless the label permits it.

Use a gentle cleaning sequence

  1. Read the care instructions. Confirm whether the frame, tabletop and fabric have separate directions. Follow the maker’s guidance if it differs from general advice.
  2. Remove loose dirt first. Brush or vacuum dry debris away before adding water. This helps prevent grit from being rubbed across a finish or woven surface.
  3. Clean a small area gently. Use a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush and mild soapy water only if the product instructions permit it. For fabric, test any cleaning product on a hidden area first, as Arhaus advises.
  4. Rinse or wipe away residue as directed. Soap or cleaning-product residue should not be left behind when the maker calls for rinsing. Use a hose only where rinsing is allowed and avoid forcing water into areas that should remain dry.
  5. Dry before covering or storing. Follow the specific drying instructions for each part. Do not put cushions away while damp or leave wet cushions sitting on a frame.

Keep the routine simple unless the manufacturer calls for a specific treatment. A gentle, compatible wash and a thorough dry are preferable to escalating to stronger chemicals or rougher tools without knowing how the finish will respond. If the instructions call for wiping rather than hosing, use a clean damp cloth; if they specify rinsing, remove the cleaning residue and let the piece dry fully.

Care for aluminum, wicker and teak

Powder-coated aluminum

Arhaus recommends weekly dusting and removing loose debris with a soft brush or hose, followed by periodic washing with a soft cloth, mild soap and water. POLYWOOD’s aluminum guidance calls for rinsing and towel-drying. POLYWOOD warns that abrasive tools and harsh cleaners such as bleach or ammonia-based products can damage aluminum and its powder coating; WickerPark likewise advises against abrasive pads and recommends drying the frame to prevent water spotting.

For furniture in a saltwater environment, Arhaus recommends rinsing and washing with soap weekly to remove salt deposits that can damage finishes. That is Arhaus’s care recommendation, not a universal schedule for every finish or location. Check the maker’s guidance for your particular furniture.

Between washes, removing dust and loose debris with a soft brush can keep grit from accumulating on the coating. When washing, avoid treating the word “metal” as permission to use a scouring pad: the powder coating is part of the finish, and POLYWOOD specifically cautions against abrasive tools and harsh cleaners. Drying after rinsing is also a practical step where the maker calls for it, rather than leaving water to spot on the frame.

Synthetic wicker and performance weave

Remove loose debris with a brush or vacuum before cleaning. Use mild soapy water and a soft brush or cloth, then rinse and dry thoroughly if the furniture’s instructions allow it. Avoid scraping or scrubbing the weave with abrasive tools.

Pressure-washing guidance is product-specific. Arhaus permits pressure washing at 1,200–1,400 psi for its all-weather wicker and performance weave. WickerPark warns against pressure washers. Neither recommendation establishes a safe setting for other furniture, so use a pressure washer only if the maker of your exact product expressly permits it and specifies how to proceed.

DEWALT 20V MAX Cordless Drill and Impact Driver, Power Tool Combo Kit , Includes 2 Batteries, Charger and Bag (DCK240C2)
  • Ergonomically Designed: Work in tight areas with a compact design that gets into tough spots
  • Compact and Lightweight: Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces. The 1/4" impact driver has a length of 5.55 in. and weighs just 2.8 lbs, while the 1/2" drill/driver measures only 7.5 in. and weighs 3.6 lbs
  • Both the DEWALT impact driver and electric drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
  • Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure

This difference is a reason to check the product guide before bringing a pressure washer to the patio, not a reason to average the advice or assume a low setting is universally safe. If you cannot confirm that the maker permits pressure washing, use the gentler brush-or-cloth method instead. Pay attention to the weave’s crevices when removing loose debris, then rinse and dry as the product instructions allow.

Teak

Unfinished natural teak exposed to sun and rain gradually changes from warm golden color to silvery grey as surface pigments fade. Design Within Reach and Arhaus describe this as natural weathering. If you like the silver-grey patina, it does not need to be treated as damage. Arhaus says a cover can help retain the original color and protect teak from mold and dirt; confirm the product’s care instructions before using any finish-retaining treatment.

For cleaning, Arhaus describes using warm water with mild dish soap or a teak-cleaning product, a soft non-metallic brush, scrubbing with the grain, rinsing and drying. Design Within Reach recommends thorough cleaning once or twice a year. This is a maintenance recommendation, not a measured guarantee about appearance or furniture life.

Scrubbing with the grain and choosing a non-metallic soft brush are specific parts of Arhaus’s teak-care directions. Do not substitute a metal brush or assume a general deck-cleaning chemical is appropriate. If you are considering a teak cleaner, verify that the furniture maker approves it for the specific piece and finish. The goal of cleaning is to remove dirt using a compatible method; the natural color change itself is not an instruction to apply a coating.

Do not assume that care for unfinished teak applies to a finished surface. Arhaus notes that finished teak can fade or wear when left uncovered. Verify which finish your piece has and follow its manufacturer’s directions before applying teak oil, sealer or another treatment.

Clean outdoor cushions without damaging the fabric

Follow the cushion’s care label before selecting a cleaner. Fabric composition and finish affect what is allowed, so recipes published for one manufacturer’s cushions should not be combined into a universal formula. In particular, Arhaus’s diluted bleach method is specifically for its InsideOut Performance Fabrics; it is not general advice for all outdoor fabric.

  1. Remove loose soil. Brush or vacuum the fabric before treating stains.
  2. Blot stains. Dab rather than rub, which can spread a stain or work soil into the fibers.
  3. Use only a compatible solution. If the label allows a cleaning product, test it on a hidden spot first. Use the maker’s stated solution and method rather than substituting a different recipe.
  4. Rinse away residue when instructed. Remaining cleaning solution can leave residue on the fabric; follow the label’s rinsing directions.
  5. Air-dry completely. Arhaus recommends drying cushions on their sides with zippers facing down, unzipping covers to let water drain, and not putting outdoor fabrics in a dryer. Keep cushions off the frame while they are wet.

POLYWOOD and Design Within Reach each publish cushion-cleaning directions for their own products, including different mild-solution approaches. Those instructions are useful when they match the cushion in front of you, but they are not interchangeable recipes for every fabric. Start with the label, spot-test a permitted product in an inconspicuous area and follow the label’s directions for rinsing and drying. If the label does not allow a particular cleaner, do not use it just because it appears in another maker’s instructions.

After rinsing, give water a route to drain rather than stacking or storing a cushion while it is wet. For Arhaus cushions, the stated method is to set them on their sides with zippers facing down and unzip covers to help water drain. Keep wet cushions off the frame as they dry. These details help distinguish cushion care from frame care: a frame may be ready to cover before the cushions are fully dry, so store the components separately until each is dry according to its instructions.

Protect furniture between cleanings and through bad weather

A well-fitting outdoor furniture cover is a useful physical barrier, but it does not replace cleaning and drying before storage. Match a cover’s dimensions to the furniture and check that it is intended for the conditions where it will be used. Avoid assuming a cover is waterproof, breathable or suitable for every material unless its product information establishes that.

Arhaus recommends covering or storing furniture securely during winter, heavy rain and other inclement weather, and cleaning and drying it before covering or storage. It also recommends removing cushions and keeping them in a dry place where possible. Design Within Reach recommends rain covers for furniture left outside through prolonged inclement weather and storing teak pieces and cushions in a shed or garage during winter.

  • Before covering or storing, remove soil and let the furniture dry according to its care instructions.
  • Take cushions off the frames and store them dry indoors where practical.
  • For teak, choose whether you prefer natural silver-grey weathering or want to retain its original color; use only protection approved for that product and finish.
  • In saltwater locations, check whether your manufacturer recommends more frequent rinsing to remove salt deposits.

When comparing covers, use fit and dimensions, the exposure the cover is intended for, compatibility with the furniture and whether you can keep the cover itself dry and ventilated as practical criteria. A cover that does not fit the piece is not a useful match, and a product description should support claims about its weather performance. No one cover specification can be assumed for every patio set. Remove cushions before covering when possible, and do not trap moisture by covering furniture before it has dried.

Dry storage is particularly useful for cushions when indoor space is available. Design Within Reach recommends storing teak pieces and cushions in a shed or garage during winter; Arhaus similarly advises keeping removed cushions in a dry place where possible. If furniture must remain outdoors, secure a suitable cover according to its instructions and revisit the furniture-specific care guidance as weather and exposure change.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using one cleaner on every surface: a product that is suitable for one fabric or frame can harm another finish. Check instructions before applying a cleaner.
  • Scrubbing with abrasive tools: abrasive pads can scratch or damage finishes, including powder coating. Choose a soft cloth or brush unless the maker specifies otherwise.
  • Pressure-washing by default: manufacturer guidance conflicts. Arhaus allows a stated pressure range for its own all-weather wicker and performance weave, while WickerPark advises against pressure washers; follow the exact furniture maker’s directions.
  • Applying teak oil or sealer without checking: unfinished and finished teak are not interchangeable, and a treatment may not suit your product.
  • Putting cushions away wet: rinse and air-dry as their care instructions direct, and keep them off the frame while wet.
  • Covering damp furniture: clean and dry pieces before covering or storage, as recommended by Arhaus.

Another common error is treating weathering as proof that a piece needs a restorative coating. Unfinished teak naturally turns silver-grey in sun and rain; that change is not necessarily damage. Decide whether you want to retain the original color, then use only the finish-specific protection the maker approves. Similarly, do not treat a fabric bleach recipe as a general outdoor-cushion solution: Arhaus identifies its diluted method for InsideOut Performance Fabrics specifically.

Choosing practical cleaning and protection supplies

Most routine care needs only tools compatible with the furniture: a soft-bristle brush, a soft cloth, mild soap and water, and a way to dry the surface. A fitted cover is an optional protection aid. Before buying a cover, compare its dimensions with the furniture and consider the expected weather exposure, material compatibility and whether it can be kept dry and ventilated. Product-specific descriptions—not the word “outdoor” alone—should establish whether it suits your conditions.

Teak cleaner and outdoor-fabric protectant are conditional purchases, not universal necessities. Use them only when the care instructions for the wood finish or fabric confirm compatibility. When comparing cleaners, look for maker approval for the relevant surface and a method for removing residue; do not choose on a blanket claim that one cleaner is best for every patio set.

A practical shopping list can stay short: a soft-bristle brush for loose debris, mild dish soap where allowed, a soft cloth, and a fitted outdoor patio furniture cover if you need a barrier for storage or prolonged bad weather. Match the cover to the furniture’s measurements and intended exposure, and consider material compatibility. Teak cleaner or fabric protectant may be useful for a specific approved product, but check the care instructions first. There is no single best cleaner for mixed-material furniture; compatibility and the ability to remove residue matter more than a broad marketing claim.

How to make patio furniture look refreshed

Start with a material-appropriate cleaning rather than an aggressive restoration treatment. Remove loose debris, wash compatible surfaces gently, treat fabric stains according to the care label and let every component dry. For teak, decide whether you want to keep the natural silver-grey patina or retain the original color, then check the maker’s advice for the specific finish. If cleaning reveals peeling coating, damaged weave or a worn finish, consult the furniture maker before applying a repair product or refinishing treatment; the care guidance cited here does not establish a single repair method for every product.

For a mixed-material set, “refreshed” does not mean making every component look identical. A teak surface may have a natural patina, an aluminum frame may need only washing and drying, and cushion fabric may need a separate spot-cleaning method. Work through the materials one at a time, using the least aggressive compatible process, rather than applying a restoration product to the whole set. If the appearance change seems to be a damaged coating or finish rather than ordinary dirt or natural weathering, ask the maker about repair options.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to clean outdoor furniture?

First check the furniture’s care label or manufacturer’s guide, then remove loose leaves and debris with a soft brush or vacuum. For compatible surfaces, use mild soap and water with a soft cloth or soft-bristle brush, rinse if the instructions call for it, and dry thoroughly. Clean cushions according to their own fabric directions and keep them off the frame while wet. The easiest safe method is the simplest one approved for that specific material and finish.

What is the best cleaner for patio furniture?

There is no universal best cleaner for every patio set. Mild soap and water are a common starting point for compatible surfaces, but check maker instructions before using a cleaner on powder-coated aluminum, synthetic wicker, teak or cushion fabric. Compare products by whether they are approved for the surface, whether the instructions explain how to rinse or remove residue, and whether the product is compatible with the finish. Avoid using bleach or ammonia-based products on aluminum unless the specific manufacturer explicitly permits them.

How do you clean fabric outdoor chairs?

Brush or vacuum loose soil, blot stains rather than rubbing them, and follow the fabric care label. Use a cleaning solution only if the instructions allow it, and spot-test it on a hidden area first. Rinse away residue when directed and let the fabric air-dry completely. Arhaus recommends drying its cushions on their sides with zippers facing down, unzipping covers to drain water, and not putting outdoor fabrics in a dryer. Bleach methods are fabric-specific, not general cushion-care advice.

How can I make my patio furniture look new?

Remove loose debris, clean each material gently with an approved method, treat stains according to the cushion label, and dry the furniture before covering or storing it. With unfinished teak, the silvery-grey color is natural weathering; use a maker-approved method only if you want to retain the original color. Do not apply oil, sealer, bleach or a repair product without confirming that it is suitable for the specific material and finish.
