The safest method is simple: turn the display off, unplug it, remove loose dust with a clean, dry microfiber cloth, then use a second cloth barely dampened with distilled water for stubborn marks. Never spray liquid directly onto the screen, press hard, scrub, or use household glass cleaner. Check the exact model’s cleaning instructions before using alcohol or any chemical product.
What you need
- Two clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloths—one for cleaning and one for drying.
- Distilled water for fingerprints and dried residue.
- Optionally, a manual bulb blower for loose dust.
The cloth must be free of grit, oil, detergent, fabric softener, and debris. A dirty cloth can scratch a panel even when the fabric itself is soft.

Do not use
- Paper towels, tissues, napkins, rough cotton, or abrasive pads.
- Melamine foam, sponges, scrubbers, or anything intended to scour.
- Glass cleaner, window cleaner, bleach, wax, furniture polish, soap, or general-purpose household cleaner.
- Alcohol, ammonia, acetone, benzene, thinner, or other solvents unless the exact model instructions explicitly permit them.
- Direct sprays or forceful compressed air.
Manufacturers including LG, Samsung, ASUS, and Dell warn that unsuitable chemicals, abrasive materials, and excessive pressure can damage surfaces or anti-glare coatings.
How to clean an OLED screen safely
1. Check the exact model instructions
“OLED” describes the display technology, not one universal surface. A glossy TV, matte QD-OLED monitor, touchscreen laptop, and professional OLED panel may have different coatings and cleaning rules. Look up the model number and read its cleaning, care, or maintenance instructions first. The manufacturer’s instructions take priority, especially for matte, anti-glare, touchscreen, medical, signage, and professional displays.

Sony specifically recommends checking with the manufacturer before using a commercial cleaner or cleaning cloth.
2. Turn the display off, cool it, and unplug it
Turn off the TV, monitor, laptop, or other device and let the surface cool for several minutes. Unplug it from the wall or power adapter, and remove cables if they obstruct the bezel or lower edge.
A dark, cool screen makes fingerprints easier to see and is less likely to streak. Unplugging also reduces electrical risk if liquid reaches the bezel, ports, speakers, vents, or internal electronics. LG, Samsung, and Sony all instruct users to power down or unplug before cleaning.

Fold a dry microfiber cloth to expose a clean section and make slow, straight passes with almost no pressure. Do not polish or repeatedly rub one spot. Dust and grit can act like abrasive particles between the cloth and the panel.
A manual bulb blower may help remove loose particles, but use gentle airflow. Do not hold compressed air close to the display or blast the surface forcefully; manufacturer advice on compressed air varies.

4. Remove fingerprints with distilled water
If marks remain, put a small amount of distilled water on the cloth—not on the screen. Wring the cloth thoroughly. It should be barely damp, never wet, dripping, or capable of leaving a trail of liquid.
Wipe the affected area with light, overlapping passes in one direction. Do not press harder to remove a stubborn mark, flex the panel, or scrub in circles. Keep moisture away from the bottom edge, bezel seams, ports, speakers, buttons, sensors, and vents.
Samsung’s TV guidance and LG’s OLED guidance both recommend applying moisture to the cloth rather than spraying or pouring it onto the display.
5. Dry the panel immediately
Use a second clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove remaining moisture and streaks. Allow the screen to dry completely before reconnecting power.
6. Clean the frame separately
The bezel, stand, and rear casing may tolerate a different method from the panel. If possible, use separate cloths. Never assume that a cleaner suitable for plastic, metal, or a remote control is safe for the OLED surface.

What to do about specific marks
Dust
Use a dry microfiber cloth with minimal pressure. Avoid paper products and rough cloths that can scratch or leave fibers.

Start with a dry microfiber cloth. If the oil remains, use a barely damp cloth with distilled water and make several gentle passes. Replace or wash the cloth if it spreads grease instead of lifting it.
Dried food or water spots
Use slightly warm—not hot—distilled water on a cloth if the exact manufacturer permits it. Hold the damp cloth against the spot briefly to soften it, then wipe gently. Never scrape with a fingernail, card, blade, sponge, or melamine foam.
Some regional guidance is more permissive: Samsung Canada describes slightly warm distilled water and, for certain monitor stains, a very mild diluted dish-soap solution. Samsung’s U.S. guidance is more restrictive. Do not treat dish soap as a universal OLED-safe method.
Greasy residue that water will not remove
Do not automatically reach for 70% isopropyl alcohol. Several current manufacturer guides, including those from LG, Samsung U.S., and Dell, warn against alcohol on their displays.

- Check the exact model manual and regional support page.
- Use a manufacturer-approved chemical only if the instructions clearly identify the permitted product and concentration.
- If no chemical is authorized, continue with distilled water and a clean cloth, using multiple light passes rather than more pressure.
- Contact the manufacturer if the residue persists or appears to be beneath the surface.
Marker ink
Do not experiment with solvent or alcohol. Sony describes a narrow exception for oil-marker ink involving a highly diluted, non-soap synthetic cleanser, but this is not a routine OLED cleaning recommendation. Follow the exact product instructions before attempting it.
Cloudy patches, rainbow areas, or permanent-looking marks
Stop cleaning if a mark changes shape, expands, or appears beneath the surface. It could be cleaner residue, coating damage, moisture behind the bezel, temporary pressure-related optical distortion, or a panel defect. Do not diagnose it solely from its appearance.
Sony notes that excessive pressure can temporarily alter the display’s appearance so that it resembles dirt, and recommends powering the display off and back on as a recovery step. Attribute that advice to Sony rather than assuming it applies identically to every OLED panel.

There is no universal alcohol rule for every OLED product. Samsung’s U.S. monitor guidance, LG’s OLED guidance, and Dell’s monitor guidance prohibit alcohol or other chemicals for their applicable products. Some regional or product-specific pages permit alcohol or ethanol in particular circumstances, while Sony permits a narrow diluted-cleanser exception for oil-marker ink.

Use this hierarchy:
- The exact model manual or support page.
- The manufacturer’s regional support page for the product’s market.
- Generic guidance from the same manufacturer.
- Conservative general advice: microfiber plus distilled water.
If a manual does permit alcohol, confirm the permitted chemical, concentration, intended surface, and application method. Apply it to the cloth—not the display—and consider testing an inconspicuous area first. Permission for one monitor, region, or coating does not transfer to another OLED screen.

If you already used the wrong cleaner
Liquid was sprayed directly onto the display
Stop immediately. Do not continue wiping liquid toward the lower bezel. If it is safe, unplug the display, gently blot the exterior with a dry microfiber cloth, and leave it disconnected until completely dry. If liquid entered the bezel, ports, speaker openings, or bottom edge, contact the manufacturer or a qualified technician before powering it on. Direct spraying can create electrical or fire hazards, according to LG and Samsung.
Streaks appeared
Common causes include too much water, mineral-containing tap water, a dirty or detergent-contaminated cloth, cleaner residue, or rubbing while the surface was wet. Try a fresh dry microfiber cloth with light passes. If necessary, repeat with a barely damp cloth using distilled water, then dry immediately.
The coating looks damaged
Cleaning cannot reverse scratches or stripped anti-glare coatings. Stop using stronger chemicals, photograph the condition, record what products and methods were used, and contact the manufacturer or retailer. Dell identifies damage caused by prohibited cleaning methods as possible customer-induced damage.
The image changed after pressing the panel
Turn the display off and leave it off briefly. Do not press harder to correct the appearance. If the change persists, document it and seek manufacturer support.
Maintenance that reduces cleaning risk
- Keep fingers off the panel whenever possible.
- Dust regularly with a clean, dry microfiber cloth.
- Keep sprays, cooking grease, smoke, and humidifier residue away from the display.
- Do not place objects where they can touch or rub the screen.
- Clean only when necessary; repeated handling creates unnecessary risk.
Cleaning improves visibility and removes potentially abrasive residue, but it does not prevent OLED image retention or burn-in.
