For a portable humidifier, empty the water daily, wipe surfaces dry, and refill with fresh water. Unplug the unit before cleaning. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends cleaning portable humidifiers every third day: scrub away scale, deposits, and film, use only a cleaner allowed by the manual, rinse thoroughly, and let the parts dry.
Daily care: empty, wipe, and refill
Before handling the humidifier, switch it off and unplug it. Empty standing water every day, wipe surfaces dry, then refill with fresh water. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also recommends daily emptying and air-drying after cleaning. EPA guidance and CDC guidance address portable household humidifiers.
How to clean the inside and outside
- Unplug the unit. Do this before emptying, disassembling, or cleaning it.
- Empty the tank. Pour out standing water and follow the manual’s directions for removing any parts.
- Scrub the water-contact surfaces. EPA advises cleaning portable humidifiers every third day during use. Use a brush or another scrubber to remove visible scale, deposits, and film from the tank and accessible interior surfaces.
- Choose a cleaner according to the manual. Use the manufacturer’s recommended product. If the manual does not specify a cleaner, EPA’s general fallback is 3% hydrogen peroxide on surfaces that contact water.
- Rinse and dry. After using any cleaning or disinfecting agent, rinse the tank thoroughly with several changes of tap water so chemicals are not dispersed into the air during operation. Let the parts air-dry before refilling or reassembling.
- Wipe the exterior. Dry accessible outside surfaces. Follow the manual for exterior materials and any parts that must not get wet.
These are general directions for portable home humidifiers, not a substitute for the unit’s instructions. Manuals govern model-specific disassembly, filter or cartridge care, and material compatibility. The EPA’s humidifier guidance does not name vinegar or bleach as default cleaners, so do not assume either is safe for your model.
Use water and humidity levels that limit buildup
EPA recommends water with low mineral content to limit scale and mineral dispersal, particularly in ultrasonic and impeller humidifiers. CDC says distilled water or water that has been boiled and cooled can further reduce germ growth. Follow the manual’s water recommendations for your device.

Keep indoor relative humidity at or below 50%, as EPA advises. If the area around the humidifier becomes damp, lower its output or run it intermittently rather than allowing moisture to linger.
What to do before storing the humidifier
At the end of the season or before an extended period without use, clean the unit as directed, dry all parts, and store it dry. Discard used demineralization cartridges, cassettes, or filters as applicable. Clean the humidifier again after storage before using it.

How the manual and EPA guidance fit together
The manual provides directions for your specific model; EPA’s every-third-day interval is a general baseline for portable humidifiers. Check the manual for the cleaning interval, approved cleaners, removable parts, and rinsing and drying directions. Specialized, console, and central systems may have different maintenance requirements, so do not apply portable-unit directions to them without checking their instructions.
EPA notes that the possible health effects of microorganisms and minerals dispersed by home humidifiers are not fully understood. Regular cleaning is practical maintenance, not a guarantee against illness.
