How to choose vessel design software for a shipyard or marine engineering team

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right vessel-design platform is the one that fits your actual design-to-production workflow—not the one with the longest feature list. Start by mapping your phases, disciplines, deliverables and existing files. Then run a paid or structured pilot on a representative vessel, require vendors to demonstrate change propagation and production outputs, and compare written total-cost proposals covering modules, seats, implementation, training, support and upgrades.

Start with the work, not the software category

“Vessel design software” can mean very different things. A naval-architecture office may mainly need hull-form development, hydrostatics, stability and hydrodynamics. A shipyard may need a controlled product model that drives structural detailing, outfitting, production engineering and fabrication information. A multidisciplinary marine team may prioritize coordination across steel, machinery, piping, HVAC and electrical systems.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Those needs overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A tool that is excellent for conceptual hull analysis may not manage production revisions, assembly information or distributed shipyard work. Conversely, a production-oriented suite may be excessive for a small design office that mainly delivers calculations, drawings and class submissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before issuing a request for proposal, document:

  • Vessel types, sizes and project volume.
  • Current and planned phases: concept, hull form, general arrangement, basic and structural design, detailed structure, outfitting and systems, analysis, production engineering and sustainment.
  • Disciplines that must work concurrently, including naval architecture, structural, mechanical, piping, HVAC, electrical, production and quality.
  • Required outputs: 3D models, drawings, class-submittal packages, calculations, bills of material, nesting or fabrication data, assembly information and handoffs to partners.
  • Sites, suppliers and subcontractors that must exchange models or drawings.
  • Regulatory, classification and internal configuration-control requirements.

This map becomes your selection specification. Without it, demonstrations tend to reward attractive geometry tools while hiding gaps in ownership, coordination and production.

Match the platform to your primary use case

Naval architecture and analysis

If hull-form creation and engineering analysis dominate, look for a parametric 3D model that supports hydrostatics, stability, hydrodynamics, structural engineering and links to the analysis tools your team already uses. NAPA describes NAPA Engineer—first officially published with NAPA Release 2025.2—as a unified 3D environment for hydrostatics, hull form, layout, stability and hydrodynamics. NAPA Designer describes hull and compartment geometry, structural design, stability workflows, finite-element meshing and software integration.

Ask for demonstrations using one of your existing hulls, including a deliberate change to dimensions, loading or compartment arrangement. Check which calculations update automatically, which require manual regeneration and how results are traced to a model revision. NAPA’s Node Network is identified as Alpha, so any workflow depending on it should be tested for maturity and support before it becomes a production dependency.

Concept and contract design

Early-stage teams need speed, variant management and analysis that is credible enough for contract decisions. AVEVA positions Initial Design for rapid hull definition and analysis during contract and structural-layout phases. It can be used for conceptual work on its own and can connect with AVEVA Marine applications for later design.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirm exactly what “connection” means for your project: which objects, attributes and revisions transfer; which downstream modules are required; and whether the handoff is one-way or repeatable. Run a concept-to-basic-design scenario rather than accepting a slide showing a generic integration.

Detailed shipbuilding and production continuity

A shipyard should treat production continuity as a first-class requirement. SSI describes ShipConstructor as covering basic and functional design through production, with Hull/Structure, Outfitting and WorkShare offerings. SSI also says its design phase can use data from third-party and legacy vessel designs and lists compatibility with Maxsurf, Rhino, Orca3D, NAPA and Paramarine.

CADMATIC describes Hull as spanning basic and detailed hull design through production information. Its broader shipbuilding platform covers concept and basic design, outfitting, hull, electrical, production design and PLM. CADMATIC lists cloud or on-premises availability for Hull. For either platform, test the outputs your yard actually consumes: plates and profiles, fabrication drawings, assembly data, material lists, penetrations, shop-floor files and revision notices. A compatible import is not useful if it does not preserve the metadata needed by production.

Multidisciplinary marine engineering

For teams coordinating steel structures, machinery, piping, HVAC, secondary steel and electrical cabling, Siemens describes an integrated marine-engineering environment for commercial, naval and yacht design. Siemens search material describes FORAN as supporting work through design and production and places its capabilities within Siemens Xcelerator Marine Engineering.

Parametric naval-architecture toolkit

Bentley describes Maxsurf as a naval-architecture toolkit for vessel design and analysis using a parametric 3D model. Its page displayed a starting price of USD 11,375 when accessed in 2026. Treat that figure as a volatile starting price, not a comparable shipyard deployment cost; confirm current licensing, region, modules, support and seat terms.

Vendor landscape at a glance

Platform Documented emphasis Questions to resolve in a pilot
NAPA Engineer and Designer Unified naval-architecture and engineering model; hull, compartments, layout, stability, hydrodynamics, structures, FE meshing and integrations. Does your required workflow depend on the Alpha-status Node Network? Which analysis and production interfaces are included in your edition?
AVEVA Initial Design Rapid hull definition and analysis for contract and structural-layout phases; connection to AVEVA Marine applications. What data and revisions pass to later design, and which AVEVA modules are required?
SSI ShipConstructor Basic and functional design through production; Hull/Structure, Outfitting and WorkShare; stated support for third-party and legacy data. Do your actual Maxsurf, Rhino, Orca3D, NAPA or Paramarine files round-trip with required attributes and production outputs?
CADMATIC Hull and shipbuilding platform Basic and detailed hull design through production information; wider outfitting, electrical, production and PLM coverage; cloud or on-premises Hull options. Which modules, deployment model and 2D/3D formats fit your security and plant requirements?
Siemens marine engineering and FORAN Integrated steel, machinery, piping, HVAC, secondary steel and electrical work through design and production. Confirm current Xcelerator packaging, licenses, interfaces, implementation responsibilities and data exchange.
Bentley Maxsurf Parametric 3D naval-architecture design and analysis. Is the toolkit sufficient for your downstream structural, systems and production deliverables?

These are vendor-described emphases, not independent performance rankings. The practical shortlist should come from your workflow map and pilot evidence.

Define deliverables before comparing features

Feature names are poor substitutes for acceptance criteria. Create a deliverables register with the exact artifact, authoring discipline, revision behavior and receiving system. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Hull surfaces, stations, offsets, hydrostatic and stability reports.
  • General-arrangement and compartment models.
  • Structural members, plates, profiles, scantlings and finite-element meshes.
  • Outfitting, machinery, piping, HVAC and electrical models.
  • Class calculations and submission drawings.
  • Production drawings, bills of material, nesting, assembly and fabrication information.
  • Change notices, approval records and as-built or sustainment data.

Give every shortlisted vendor the same small project and ask for the same outputs. Record manual steps, unsupported objects, conversion work and the time needed to regenerate deliverables after a change. A product should not receive credit for an output that your team must rebuild outside the system.

Test interoperability with representative files

Bring real, sanitized files from your current projects—not only a clean demonstration model. Include at least one legacy hull, a partner exchange, a model with nonstandard naming and a revision containing geometry and metadata changes.

  1. Import. Check geometry, coordinate systems, units, tolerances, object types, attributes and naming.
  2. Validate. Review warnings and errors. Require the vendor to explain which objects were dropped, approximated or converted.
  3. Edit. Change a principal dimension, compartment boundary, structural member and service route.
  4. Round-trip. Export to the receiving system, reopen it and compare geometry, metadata and revision identifiers.
  5. Publish. Generate one engineering deliverable and one production deliverable from the revised model.
  6. Measure effort. Log conversion time, manual repairs, scripts, specialist assistance and unresolved defects.

NAPA documents general CAD and production-software integrations; SSI names several naval-architecture packages; CADMATIC documents specified 2D and 3D formats. Those statements identify possible exchange paths, not proof that your files will transfer reliably. Your acceptance test should define tolerances and a pass/fail rule.

Evaluate model ownership and collaboration

Ask each vendor to show a scenario in which naval architecture, structural, piping and production users make separate changes to the same vessel. The demonstration should answer:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Which system or database is authoritative for each object?
  • Can users work concurrently across sites, and how are locks or conflicts handled?
  • What permissions apply to design, review, approval and release?
  • How are revisions, baselines and superseded objects identified?
  • Can a production user see the approved state without editing design data?
  • How are conflicts detected, resolved and documented?
  • How are downstream drawings, lists and shop-floor files republished after approval?

Require a trace from an engineering change to every affected drawing, calculation, material list and production package. If the vendor cannot demonstrate impact identification, budget for manual coordination and the associated error risk.

Plan a scenario-based proof of concept

Choose one representative vessel or block and one realistic change. A useful scenario might combine a hull-form adjustment, a compartment relocation, a structural update, a pipe or cable reroute and a revised fabrication package. Use your own naming conventions and a controlled subset of legacy data.

  1. Define the starting model, required outputs, users, interfaces and acceptance tolerances.
  2. Give every vendor identical input files and a fixed demonstration window.
  3. Require the vendor team to identify assumptions before modeling.
  4. Score the same criteria: domain fit, model integrity, production readiness, interoperability, change handling, multidisciplinary collaboration, role-based usability, deployment fit, support and total cost.
  5. Record every workaround, custom script, unsupported object and unresolved question.
  6. Repeat the critical change after a break or handoff to test whether another team can maintain the model.
  7. Issue a written gap log with owner, remedy, cost and target date for each failed criterion.

Do not let a polished demonstration replace evidence. A pilot should reveal the work your team will own after consultants leave.

Compare deployment, security and administration

Decide whether the system must run on premises, in a private cloud, through a vendor-hosted service or in a hybrid arrangement. CADMATIC lists cloud and on-premises availability for Hull, but the suitable option depends on your network, export controls, subcontractor access and information-security rules.

Request written answers on:

  • Supported operating systems, databases, browsers and virtualization methods.
  • Identity integration, multifactor authentication, role administration and audit logs.
  • Backup, restore, disaster recovery and retention responsibilities.
  • Performance limits for model size, concurrent users and remote connections.
  • Data residency, encryption, subcontractor access and termination export.
  • Version compatibility, upgrade windows and rollback procedures.

Include IT and production representatives in the pilot. A technically capable design tool can still fail if it cannot be administered within your security and availability requirements.

Budget the total cost of ownership

Public prices are not comparable across these products. Enterprise quotes vary with geography, modules, user types, deployment, vessel scale, integrations and service scope. Bentley’s Maxsurf page displayed a USD 11,375 starting price when accessed in 2026; verify whether that is current and which license or edition it represents before using it in a budget.

Organize implementation around controlled milestones

Prepare the data

Inventory models, drawings, naming rules, coordinate systems, attributes, libraries, scripts and interfaces. Classify what must migrate, what can be archived and what should be rebuilt. Clean a small, representative dataset first; a full migration estimate based only on file counts is unreliable.

Configure standards

Set up templates, layers or object classes, naming, units, materials, approval states, drawing styles and revision rules. Have production and quality sign off on the standards before large-scale modeling begins.

Pilot with real roles

Include a naval architect, structural designer, systems designer, checker, production engineer, planner and administrator. Measure completion of agreed deliverables rather than attendance at training sessions.

Release in stages

Start with one vessel, block or discipline boundary. Freeze the baseline, publish outputs, review defects and only then expand. Maintain a fallback process for urgent production work while the new workflow stabilizes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Govern changes

Appoint owners for the authoritative model, libraries, interfaces and acceptance tests. Record every customization and its maintenance responsibility. Require upgrade impact assessments before installing a new release.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them

Choosing by feature count

A long list of analysis, CAD or PLM functions does not prove that the workflows connect. Replace feature checklists with deliverable demonstrations and measurable acceptance criteria.

Trusting compatibility logos

Named formats may omit attributes, tolerances or revision history. Test import, edit, export and round-trip behavior with your own files.

Ignoring production until late

Shipyards should involve fabrication, assembly, nesting, planning and quality users in the first pilot. Otherwise a model can be correct for design yet unusable on the shop floor.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Underestimating ownership

Licenses are only one part of cost. Data cleanup, configuration, interfaces, training, support and internal backfill can determine whether the program succeeds.

Accepting a vague integration promise

Ask for object-level mappings, revision behavior, error handling, frequency, responsibility and a tested sample. Put commitments and exclusions in the contract.

Overlooking release maturity

If a required capability is identified as Alpha or otherwise early-stage, define a fallback, support commitment and exit condition before relying on it for a contracted deliverable.

A practical decision scorecard

Use a weighted score that reflects your business rather than a generic ranking. For a production-focused yard, model integrity, change propagation and production outputs may carry the highest weights. For a design office, hull-form quality, hydrostatics, stability, hydrodynamics and analysis integration may dominate. Score evidence from the pilot separately from vendor claims.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Criterion Evidence to score
Domain fit Required phases, vessel types, disciplines and analysis methods completed without workarounds.
Model integrity Geometry, attributes, units, naming and revision history survive edits and exchange.
Production readiness Required fabrication, assembly, nesting, material and release outputs are generated in usable form.
Change handling Impacts are detected, approved and propagated to downstream deliverables.
Interoperability Legacy and partner files round-trip within agreed tolerances.
Collaboration Concurrent work, permissions, review, conflict resolution and authoritative ownership are clear.
Deployment fit Security, performance, hosting and administration meet site requirements.
Adoption Role-based usability, training, support and implementation plan are credible.
Commercial fit Three- to five-year cost, assumptions, renewal terms and exit provisions are understood.

Questions to put in every vendor meeting

  • Which exact modules and seats are required for our stated workflow?
  • Which functions are native, configured, scripted or dependent on another product?
  • Can you demonstrate our representative files and deliverables?
  • What data is authoritative, and how are revisions and approvals recorded?
  • What happens when two disciplines change the same object?
  • Which production outputs are generated directly, and which require another system?
  • What are the largest model, user and site limits you support in practice?
  • Who performs migration, integration and upgrades, and what remains our responsibility?
  • What support response times, training resources and regional coverage are included?
  • What is excluded from the quote, and how are customizations maintained?

Make the final decision

Select the candidate that meets your non-negotiable deliverables with the least manual coordination and the clearest ownership model. Require a written proposal tied to the pilot results, including module scope, seats, deployment, implementation milestones, training, support, upgrades, integrations, assumptions and acceptance criteria.

There is no universal winner or reliable public total-cost comparison for these platforms. The defensible choice is the one your team has validated on real data, real revisions and real production outputs, with commercial terms that make the implementation sustainable.
