The right choice depends first on where the material will be installed—at grade, on a roof amenity area or in a wall—and then on the required format, appearance, engineering and local availability. A February 17, 2023 Building Design + Construction feature presents that broad portfolio, while the publisher’s Unilock index adds coverage of roof pavers and slabs, EcoTerra, Elegance, Umbriano and the U-Cara Multi-Face Wall System.
Those articles identify product categories and applications, not independent durability tests, current prices or project-specific engineering approvals. Use them to build a shortlist, then obtain current technical documentation and installation guidance from Unilock and a local supplier before ordering or specifying materials.

What Unilock supplies
The featured portfolio spans horizontal paving and vertical wall construction. “Pavers” generally refers to modular units used to create paved surfaces, while “slabs” are larger-format units that can be used for paving and roof amenity applications. Retaining-wall products are assembled as a wall system rather than laid as a walking or driving surface.
| Project use | Formats identified in the coverage | Questions to resolve before specification |
|---|---|---|
| Residential ground-level areas | Pavers, slabs and retaining walls | Intended use, site conditions, selected finish, base and drainage design, local installation requirements |
| Commercial ground-level areas | Pavers, slabs and retaining walls | Design loads, accessibility, maintenance plan, construction sequencing and approval requirements |
| Roof or elevated amenity areas | Roof pavers and slabs | Roof assembly, allowable loading, protection layers, drainage, edge restraint and access for installation |
| Vertical grade changes or landscape walls | Retaining-wall systems, including the U-Cara Multi-Face Wall System in the index | Wall height, soil and water conditions, reinforcement, setbacks, surcharge loads and engineering review |
The publisher’s wording calls the products “innovative,” but that is promotional language from the feature, not a measured performance conclusion. The available coverage does not establish a universal best product, a service life, a load rating or an environmental advantage for any one family.

Product families appearing in the coverage
Umbriano pavers and wall formats
The Unilock index lists Umbriano coverage dated June 13, 2022 and identifies both paver and wall formats. That makes Umbriano relevant when a design team is considering a coordinated horizontal surface and vertical wall appearance. The excerpt does not provide current sizes, colors, structural ratings or installation details, so those items must come from the current product literature for the project region.
U-Cara Multi-Face Wall System
The index lists the U-Cara Multi-Face Wall System in a June 22, 2021 item. It is a wall-system topic rather than a statement that every U-Cara configuration is suitable for every height or soil condition. Confirm the permitted wall geometry, connector or reinforcement requirements, cap details, drainage provisions and engineering limits for the exact configuration being considered.
EcoTerra
A March 12, 2024 index entry describes EcoTerra as a paver innovation. The retrieved description does not substantiate lifecycle comparisons, recycled-content percentages, embodied-carbon reductions or field-performance results. Treat the name as a product-family lead, then request a current environmental product declaration or other verifiable documentation if sustainability criteria affect the project.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsElegance pavers
The index includes Elegance pavers in a September 13, 2023 entry. The excerpt identifies the product topic but does not establish dimensions, surface treatment, traffic suitability or maintenance requirements. Ask for the current technical sheet and physical samples rather than relying on an index description.
Roof pavers and slabs
A September 3, 2024 index item describes roof pavers and slabs as a way to turn roof areas into outdoor amenity spaces. That describes an application concept, not approval for a particular roof. A roof designer must verify the complete assembly, allowable dead and live loads, drainage and waterproofing interfaces before a product is selected.
Start with the application, not the appearance
Choosing a color from a brochure before defining the use can produce an attractive but unsuitable specification. Establish the application in this order.

1. Ground-level pedestrian paving
For walks, patios, courtyards and similar areas, identify the expected pedestrian use, edge conditions, slopes and drainage path. Determine whether the design calls for modular pavers or larger slabs, and whether the surrounding landscape requires a matching wall format. The final pattern, jointing material, base build-up and restraint details should follow the current installation instructions for the selected system.
2. Driveways and vehicle-access areas
Vehicle traffic introduces loads and turning forces that a pedestrian patio does not experience. Tell the supplier and installer the vehicle types, frequency and anticipated service conditions. Do not infer suitability from a product’s appearance or from its use in a residential photograph. Obtain written application guidance and a base-and-joint design appropriate to the site.
3. Commercial plazas and public areas
Commercial projects add accessibility, maintenance, construction phasing and documentation requirements. Coordinate the paving module with door thresholds, drainage inlets, utility covers, tactile or detectable-warning elements and snow or cleaning operations where applicable. Require the contractor to submit the selected product, laying pattern, edge restraints and installation method for review before procurement.
4. Roof terraces and amenity decks
Roof applications must be treated as an engineered assembly. Confirm the roof structure’s allowable loading, the waterproofing manufacturer’s requirements, protection and separation layers, pedestal or support approach if used, drainage paths and safe perimeter conditions. Obtain a detail showing how pavers or slabs meet drains, doors, parapets and expansion joints. A product that works at grade cannot automatically be transferred to a roof.
5. Retaining walls
Define the wall’s purpose and geometry before choosing a face style. Record wall height, tiering, backfill type, groundwater, adjacent slopes, nearby foundations, traffic or other surcharge loads and the space available for setbacks. These factors determine whether a gravity, reinforced-soil or another engineered approach is appropriate. Have the responsible designer verify stability, drainage and reinforcement for the actual site.

Appearance and finish decisions
Once the application is established, evaluate appearance with full-size samples or a mock-up. Compare the installed surface in the project’s daylight and artificial-light conditions, and view it beside the building facade, plantings, coping and wall materials. Ask how the finish is expected to look when wet, how joint lines will read at the planned module and how replacement units can be matched later.

Use the same process for walls. Check how corners, caps, steps, inside angles, curves and transitions are formed, not just the face of a straight run. A multi-face wall system may offer several visible orientations, but the exact formats and detailing options must be confirmed in the current regional documentation.
Technical information to request
Before issuing a purchase order, assemble a project-specific information package. Request the following for each shortlisted paver, slab or wall system:
- Current dimensions, tolerances, unit weights and available finishes or colors.
- Intended applications and any published limitations for pedestrian, vehicle, commercial or roof use.
- Installation instructions covering base preparation, bedding, jointing, edge restraint, compaction and cleaning.
- Details for steps, curves, drains, thresholds, corners, caps, transitions and accessible routes.
- For walls, allowable heights or configurations, setback rules, reinforcement options, drainage and foundation requirements.
- For roofs, approved support methods, protection layers, loading information and waterproofing-interface details.
- Maintenance guidance, replacement procedures and cleaning products that will not damage the finish.
- Regional availability, lead time, minimum order quantities, color-lot consistency and arrangements for spare units.
- Environmental documentation if the project has embodied-carbon, recycled-content or certification requirements.
These documents should be current for the project location. Product names and index descriptions can remain online after a format, finish or installation detail changes.

A practical specification workflow
- Map the surfaces. Draw separate areas for pedestrian paving, vehicle paving, roof decks and walls. Assign each area its own performance and detailing requirements.
- Gather site constraints. Record grades, drainage, utilities, soil, existing structures, roof limits, access routes and construction phases.
- Create a shortlist. Select only product families whose published application matches each area. Keep paving and wall systems coordinated where a visual relationship matters.
- Verify the documents. Compare the current technical sheets, installation manuals and regional availability with the design drawings. Resolve conflicting dimensions before finalizing patterns.
- Review engineering. Obtain structural or geotechnical review for roof assemblies, tall or loaded retaining walls, unusual soils, high water conditions and any other nonstandard condition.
- Build a sample panel. Approve a representative area that shows the actual jointing, edge treatment, wall cap and transitions. Record the approved product codes and lot information.
- Coordinate procurement. Order enough material from compatible lots, reserve replacement units and confirm delivery staging so pallets do not overload a roof or obstruct public access.
- Inspect installation. Check the delivered units, base preparation, slopes, restraints, joints, drainage and wall alignment at agreed hold points. Document substitutions before they are installed.
Residential and commercial planning differences
Residential projects
Homeowners usually prioritize appearance, usable outdoor space and a manageable maintenance routine. Confirm where water will flow during heavy rain, how the paving meets the house, and whether future utility work could require removal and replacement. For a retaining wall, identify fences, pools, driveways and property lines that could add load or restrict access for construction.
Commercial projects
Commercial owners need a specification that survives review by the architect, civil engineer, structural engineer, building officials and facilities team. Include product identification, pattern, base and jointing requirements, accessibility details, cleaning procedures and a replacement strategy in the project manual. Coordinate deliveries with other trades and protect completed surfaces from construction traffic.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming a product name supplies the specification
A family name does not tell you the current thickness, finish, load guidance or installation method. Tie every order to a current technical document and a regional product code.

Using a ground-paving detail on a roof
Roof decks have structural, waterproofing and drainage constraints that do not exist in the same form at grade. Require a roof-specific assembly detail and approval from the responsible design professionals.
Choosing a wall by face appearance alone
Wall stability depends on geometry, soil, water and surcharge conditions. Complete the engineering and drainage design before selecting the visible face.
Promising sustainability benefits without documentation
The index calls EcoTerra an innovation, but the excerpt does not establish lifecycle or performance comparisons. Request quantified, project-relevant documentation before making an environmental claim in specifications or marketing.
Ignoring regional supply
A finish shown in a national or older article may not be stocked near the project. Confirm lead times, lot availability and replacement-unit plans with the local supplier before approving the design.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the published coverage can—and cannot—tell you
The February 17, 2023 feature and the publisher index show that Unilock addresses residential and commercial hardscape work across pavers, slabs and retaining walls. They also point to specific topics—Umbriano, U-Cara, EcoTerra, Elegance and roof paving—that may help a designer begin a product search.
They do not provide independent comparative testing, current prices, inventory, universal engineering approvals, dimensions for every product or proof that one family will outperform another. Those decisions require current manufacturer documents, local supply information and project-specific design review.

When to involve a professional
Bring in the appropriate designer or engineer whenever a wall retains significant soil, supports a surcharge, approaches a property line or structure, or encounters groundwater. Do the same for roof paving, elevated decks, unusual traffic, poor soils, complex drainage or public accessibility requirements. A qualified installer can translate the approved details into sequencing and quality-control checks, but should not substitute an unapproved product or detail without written review.
