The right home water purifier is the one certified to reduce the contaminant you actually need to address, in a format your household will use and maintain. Start with evidence about your water supply, then compare certified performance, installation, capacity, replacement parts, waste and total ownership cost. A purifier chosen only because of a generic “clean water” claim can leave the relevant contaminant untreated.

1. Identify the water problem before you shop

Water treatment is not a universal upgrade. The appropriate system depends on what is present in your water and what you want to reduce. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states in its November 2024 WaterSense Guide to Selecting Water Treatment Systems that “no single treatment system removes all contaminants.” That is why the first step is diagnosis, not choosing a technology or a container style.

Use your public water supplier’s information

If your home receives water from a public utility, obtain its latest consumer confidence report and any current water-quality notices. These reports describe contaminants detected in the distribution system and the levels measured at the utility. They do not necessarily describe changes that occur inside your building’s plumbing, such as lead released by an older service line, solder or faucet.

For a concern such as PFAS, EPA advises checking information from your local water provider or public-system data. EPA also notes that a filter may not be useful when PFAS have not been measured or are below applicable federal limits. A local result gives you a defensible treatment target instead of relying on an online list of “common contaminants.”

Test private-well water

Private wells are not regulated like public water systems. Arrange testing through a qualified laboratory, your state or local health department, or another authority familiar with private wells. Test after flooding, a change in taste or odor, nearby construction or spills, and whenever a health professional recommends it. A basic panel may not detect every problem; the laboratory should help select tests based on geology, agricultural or industrial activity, and the condition of the well.

Do not assume a household filter makes microbiologically unsafe water safe. Bacteria, viruses, parasites, nitrate, arsenic, metals and volatile chemicals require different treatment approaches. If a test indicates an immediate health hazard, contact your health department or a qualified water-treatment professional before relying on a point-of-use device.

2. Define the reduction claim you need

Write down the contaminant, the source of the evidence, and the level you need to reduce. Then check the exact model’s performance data sheet and an accredited third-party certification directory. EPA’s general consumer guide recommends this process because certification applies to a specific product, configuration and claim—not to every item using the same technology or logo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Lead is a specific certification question

For products covered by EPA’s lead consumer material, look for NSF/ANSI 53 certification for lead reduction and NSF/ANSI 42 Class I for particulate reduction. These are different claims: a Class I particulate rating does not, by itself, prove lead reduction. EPA’s June 6, 2024 lead-filter tool describes accredited third-party-evaluated point-of-use and pitcher filters that reduce lead to 5 parts per billion or less while also meeting the Class I particulate criterion. That tool’s scope should not be generalized to every filter or every installation.

A whole-house unit can treat water entering the building, but it cannot remove lead introduced by plumbing downstream of the treatment point. If your concern is a particular faucet, a certified point-of-use filter at that location may be necessary even when a whole-house system is installed.

PFAS claims need extra scrutiny

EPA describes granular activated carbon, reverse osmosis and ion exchange as possible PFAS-reduction technologies, but the exact product certification remains decisive. EPA’s PFAS consumer page says that certifications described as of April 2024 focused on PFOA and PFOS, and that those then-current certifications did not establish reduction to levels in EPA’s drinking-water standard. That page was updated August 3, 2026, so check its current certification and regulatory information when making a purchase. Do not treat “tested for PFAS” as equivalent to a certified reduction claim for the particular compounds and operating conditions that matter to your home.

Do not treat a logo or “tested” statement as proof

Certification standards, performance indicators and contaminant lists are not interchangeable. Read the performance data sheet for the model number you intend to buy. Confirm the named contaminant, reduction percentage or outlet level, rated capacity, flow conditions and replacement component. If a listing gives only a broad technology name or a marketing phrase, it has not established that the system addresses your target.

3. Match the treatment goal to an appropriate approach

Household goal Approaches described by EPA What to verify
Taste, chlorine odor or some organic chemicals Activated carbon or granular activated carbon (GAC) may adsorb chemicals as water passes through. Exact contaminant claim, rated capacity and cartridge-change interval. Carbon performance varies by formulation and contact time.
Lead at a drinking-water tap A point-of-use or pitcher filter with the applicable NSF/ANSI 53 lead-reduction claim; NSF/ANSI 42 Class I addresses particulate reduction. The exact model’s third-party listing, lead claim and installation at the faucet used for drinking or cooking.
PFAS GAC, reverse osmosis or ion exchange may be used when the product has a relevant certified claim. Which PFAS are covered, the certified reduction, capacity, replacement interval and current certification status.
Dissolved minerals or a broad dissolved-contaminant load Reverse osmosis, ion exchange or distillation can be considered for appropriate contaminants. Input-water limits, reject-water or energy requirements, remineralization advice and maintenance obligations.
Microbial contamination Ultraviolet treatment, disinfection and other treatment trains may be relevant, depending on the organism and water source. Organism-specific performance, pretreatment needs, power reliability and a public-health or water-treatment professional’s advice.

This table is a starting point, not a substitute for a certified claim. A device can use a technology associated with one contaminant and still lack a verified claim for another.

4. Choose where treatment should occur

Decide whether you need treated water at one drinking tap, several fixtures or every outlet. Point-of-use (POU) systems treat water at a specific location. Point-of-entry (POE), or whole-house, systems treat water as it enters the building.

Pitcher filters

A pitcher requires no plumbing work and can be moved between locations. It also requires regular filling, refrigerator or counter space, and lifting a full container. EPA’s lead handout gives an average cartridge life of 2–6 months, depending on model, use and water quality. Its February 2024 example ranges were $15–$50 for a pitcher and $5–$20 for a replacement cartridge; these are historical examples, not current quotes. Verify that the replacement cartridge—not merely the pitcher body—carries the reduction claim you need.

Faucet-mounted filters

These provide filtered water on demand without a separate dispenser. Check the faucet type and aerator connection before buying; pull-out, spray and specialty faucets may be incompatible. Follow the manufacturer’s diversion, flushing and flow instructions. EPA’s February 2024 examples were $20–$100 for the filter and $10–$30 for replacement cartridges, with a typical 2–6 month cartridge life that varies with use and water quality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Under-sink systems

An under-sink unit connects to the cold-water line and commonly uses a dedicated lead-free faucet. It can supply larger quantities and higher flow than a pitcher, but cabinet space, shutoff-valve condition, drilling and tools matter. Some installations require a plumber. EPA’s handout gives a typical cartridge life of 6–24 months or more, depending on model, usage and water quality. Its February 2024 examples were $80–$200 or more for the unit plus the faucet, and $50–$100 for replacement cartridges.

Refrigerator filtration

Many refrigerators include water and ice filtration. Confirm the exact compatible cartridge and its contaminant certification; a refrigerator’s built-in filter is not automatically certified for lead, PFAS or another target. EPA’s handout gives a six-month average cartridge life and a February 2024 example replacement range of $20–$50.

Whole-house systems

Choose POE treatment only when the objective requires multiple treated outlets—for example, a contaminant that affects bathing, laundry or all household uses. EPA says these systems can cost thousands of dollars and generally require professional installation. They may need pretreatment, a drain, electrical service, backwashing or a larger maintenance program. A whole-house system does not protect against lead introduced downstream by interior plumbing, so a certified tap filter may still be needed for drinking water.

5. Understand the main technologies

Activated carbon and GAC

Carbon media adsorb certain chemicals onto their surface. Performance depends on the media, flow rate, contact time, incoming concentration and cartridge condition. Carbon filters are often selected for taste and odor, but you must verify a model-specific reduction claim for any health-related contaminant. Once capacity is exhausted, a carbon cartridge can stop performing even if water still flows normally.

Reverse osmosis

RO forces water through a thin barrier and can address a broad range of dissolved contaminants when the system is appropriately designed and certified. EPA identifies NSF/ANSI 58 as the relevant RO standard in its PFAS consumer guidance; confirm the exact contaminant claim rather than relying on the standard number alone. RO systems need pretreatment in some water conditions, periodic filter and membrane changes, and a drain connection for reject water.

Water efficiency varies considerably. EPA’s November 2024 WaterSense guide estimates that a typical point-of-use RO system wastes at least 5 gallons of water per gallon treated; some inefficient models waste up to 10 gallons. WaterSense-labeled RO systems waste 2.3 gallons or less per gallon treated. Ask for the system’s tested efficiency under the conditions relevant to your installation, not a best-case marketing number.

Ion exchange

Ion-exchange resin captures selected contaminant ions. The resin chemistry, capacity and regeneration or cartridge design determine what it treats. Verify the target contaminant, hardness limits, pretreatment requirements and disposal or replacement instructions. An ion-exchange system designed for one ion is not automatically suitable for another.

Distillation

Distillation boils water and condenses the vapor, leaving many nonvolatile substances behind. It uses energy, produces water relatively slowly and still requires cleaning to remove scale. Volatile compounds may require additional controls, so match the design and certification to the contaminant rather than assuming that boiling solves every problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ultraviolet treatment

UV can inactivate susceptible microorganisms, but it does not remove dissolved minerals, metals, PFAS or particles. Water clarity, lamp output, flow rate and electricity affect performance. A UV unit may need pretreatment and a backup plan for power interruptions.

6. Compare ownership, not just the purchase price

EPA’s WaterSense guide gives broad guide-level ranges: basic pitchers and tap filters typically cost less than $100; distillation and RO systems tend to cost a few hundred dollars and may require professional installation; POE systems can cost thousands. These are not current retail quotations. Your ownership budget should include every item below:

  • Initial purifier, faucet, storage tank, tubing and adapters.
  • Professional installation, drilling, electrical work or drain connections.
  • Replacement cartridges, membranes, resin or UV lamps at the manufacturer’s interval.
  • Cleaning, sanitizing, descaling and leak checks.
  • Electricity for RO pumps, UV lamps or distillation.
  • Water used for flushing and RO reject water sent to the drain.
  • Testing before and after installation when a health-related contaminant is involved.

Compare the cost per treated gallon only after confirming the rated capacity and replacement schedule. A low-priced cartridge with a short life can cost more over a year than a larger cartridge that costs more initially. Conversely, a high-capacity system is poor value if the household will not use or maintain it.

7. Check installation and daily-use fit

Before ordering, inspect the intended location. Measure cabinet clearance, faucet-hole availability, tubing route, shutoff-valve condition and access for cartridge changes. Determine whether the system must connect only to cold water, whether it needs a drain saddle or air gap, and whether it requires power. For a refrigerator filter, record the refrigerator model and cartridge number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think about behavior as well as plumbing. A pitcher fails as a solution if nobody refills it. An under-sink system fails if the dedicated faucet is inconvenient. A whole-house system may be unnecessary if only drinking water is affected. Place the treatment point where the household will consistently use it, and make replacement parts easy to identify and obtain.

8. Build a maintenance plan that protects performance

EPA warns that maintenance is necessary to keep treatment systems effective and that neglect can worsen water quality. Set a calendar reminder for the rated replacement interval, but replace sooner when the manufacturer specifies a capacity limit or when flow, taste or odor changes. A normal flow rate does not prove that a cartridge is still removing contaminants.

Routine checklist

  • Record the installation date, model number and cartridge part number.
  • Flush a new cartridge exactly as instructed and discard the initial water if required.
  • Replace cartridges, membranes, resin or lamps at the stated interval or capacity.
  • Clean and disinfect housings, storage tanks and lines according to the manual.
  • Inspect tubing, fittings and the faucet for leaks after every change.
  • Keep untreated and treated-water lines clearly identified when a system has a bypass.
  • Test water again when the original contaminant was a health concern or the source changes.

Common failure modes

  • Wrong contaminant claim: Recheck the model’s performance sheet and third-party listing; a generic carbon or “tested” statement is insufficient.
  • Premature clogging: Sediment or iron may require pretreatment or a shorter replacement interval.
  • Low flow: A clogged cartridge, closed valve, kinked tube or low inlet pressure may be responsible.
  • Leaks: Shut off the supply, reseat or replace the seal, and follow the installation instructions before restoring pressure.
  • Persistent taste or odor: Confirm that the cartridge is installed correctly, fully flushed and within capacity; investigate the source water if the issue remains.
  • RO drain running continuously: Check the shutoff, flow restrictor, tank pressure and membrane condition, or call a qualified installer.

9. A practical purchase sequence

  1. State the goal. Write the contaminant or quality issue you intend to reduce and identify whether the concern applies to one tap or the whole building.
  2. Gather evidence. Read the public utility’s current report, or obtain a qualified private-well test. For PFAS, check the local provider or public-system data before deciding that filtration is warranted.
  3. Set the treatment boundary. Choose POU for a drinking or cooking tap, or POE when multiple uses genuinely require treatment.
  4. Short-list technologies. Consider carbon, RO, ion exchange, distillation or UV only when the technology fits the contaminant and the household can meet its installation and maintenance requirements.
  5. Verify the exact model. Match the model number and configuration to an accredited third-party directory and its performance data sheet. Confirm the contaminant, standard, capacity and outlet claim.
  6. Check compatibility. Measure the space, inspect plumbing and confirm faucet, refrigerator, drain and electrical requirements.
  7. Price the first year and later years. Add installation, replacement parts, cleaning supplies, energy and RO water waste to the purchase price.
  8. Plan maintenance before installation. Record dates, order compatible replacements and decide who will perform cleaning, sanitizing and leak checks.
  9. Re-test when appropriate. For a health-related contaminant, verify performance with follow-up testing or professional advice rather than assuming that water is safe because it tastes better.

10. Final verification checklist

  • Exact model and configuration are identified.
  • The performance sheet names the contaminant you need to reduce.
  • An accredited third-party directory confirms the same claim for that model.
  • NSF/ANSI 53 lead reduction and NSF/ANSI 42 Class I particulate reduction are not being conflated.
  • PFAS claims identify the compounds covered and reflect current certification information.
  • Replacement cartridges, membranes or lamps are compatible and available.
  • Installation requirements, space, plumbing, drainage and power have been checked.
  • Capacity and replacement intervals fit your household’s volume and budget.
  • Cleaning, disinfection and testing responsibilities are written into a maintenance calendar.
  • The system is not being represented as making unsafe water safe beyond its certified use.
