Identify the fastener’s drive recess, then choose a bit with the matching profile and size. A cross-shaped recess may take a Phillips (PH) or Pozidriv (PZ) bit; those are distinct drives, not interchangeable labels. Before driving, check that the bit seats fully and feels stable. If it rocks, sits shallow, or slips under controlled hand pressure, stop and reassess the type or size.
Identify the recess before choosing a bit
Look at the shape inside the fastener head, not just its outline. Common screwdriver-bit families include slotted, Phillips, Pozidriv, Torx and hex. Manufacturers list them as separate types, and bits are available in different sizes, lengths and formats. Wiha’s bit listings show these distinct families.

This is a field identification aid, not a universal sizing chart. For an assembly with specified fasteners, follow its drawing or the equipment maker’s instructions. The cited manufacturer listings establish separate drive families and products, but do not map every screw dimension to a bit size.

A bit can have the right general shape but still be the wrong size. Choose the marking that matches the recess, then test the fit before applying driving force: the bit should sit fully and feel stable. If it rocks, sits shallow or slips under controlled hand pressure, stop rather than forcing it; reassess the drive family and size.

Phillips and Pozidriv are separate profiles
PH and PZ recesses both look cross-shaped, so they are easy to confuse. Treat them as different profiles and use the corresponding marked bit. Wiha separately lists Phillips bits and Pozidriv bits, and offers an assortment containing both. The listings support keeping the types distinct; they do not establish that one is universally better.
Do not guess at uncommon or damaged drives
If a fastener is proprietary, damaged, security-style or otherwise unfamiliar, consult the equipment maker’s instructions or identify the correct replacement fastener. Guessing from a partial or worn recess can lead to a poor fit.

Check the fit before driving
- Identify the recess profile and any size marking on the fastener or its instructions.
- Select a bit marked for that drive family and size.
- Seat it in the recess and check that it fits fully without rocking.
- Apply controlled hand pressure. If the bit slips or feels unstable, stop and reassess instead of forcing it.
This fit check is practical guidance, not a manufacturer test result. It helps catch a mismatched bit before you proceed.
When an ACR Phillips bit makes sense
Wera describes its 853/4 Harpoon ACR bits as Phillips bits with anti-cam-out ribs. Wera recommends pairing them with ribbed ACR screws for maximum effect. This is a matched bit-and-fastener feature, not a reason to choose an ACR bit for every Phillips screw.

Choose a set around the fasteners you use
A multi-type set can be useful when your work involves several drive families, but coverage matters more than piece count. Check that the set includes the types and sizes required for your fasteners, as well as a bit length and holder format that suit the job.
For example, Wiha lists a 13-piece, 1/4-inch set containing Phillips, Pozidriv and Torx bits. That is an example of mixed coverage, not a universal recommendation; choose based on the fasteners at hand. For ribbed ACR screws, consider a compatible Phillips ACR bit rather than assuming a standard Phillips bit has the same feature.
