Choose metal-roof gutters by sizing the entire drainage path—not by defaulting to a 5-inch or 6-inch gutter. The roof area feeding each run, roof slope, local design rainfall, gutter profile and slope, outlets, downpipes, and material compatibility all affect whether the system drains safely. Use the locally adopted code and its rainfall method for final sizing.
Start with the water each gutter run must carry
Map every roof plane to the gutter run that receives its runoff. Account for valleys and upper roofs that discharge into a lower roof or gutter; those features can concentrate flow beyond what the adjacent eave area alone suggests. The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) puts the basic sizing principle plainly: “Gutter size is determined by the roof slope area and the anticipated amount of rain an area historically receives.”

Use the rainfall intensity and flow calculation method required by the building or plumbing code adopted where the project is located. The 2021 International Plumbing Code (IPC) sizes horizontal gutters using roof-surface flow rate and tables keyed to gutter dimensions and slope. In Australia, the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) Housing Provisions use rainfall-intensity and roof-catchment tables for eaves-gutter selection, with a higher-performance criterion for overflow measures. These methods are jurisdiction-specific; do not substitute one for another without confirming local requirements.

The NZ Metal Roofing Manufacturers Code of Practice provides calculators for gutter, valley, and downpipe capacities. Its revision was issued on 1 September 2026. For any project, confirm the applicable code edition and local rainfall data rather than treating a published example or calculator as a universal answer.

Choose a profile and layout that can overflow safely
External hanging gutters are commonly supplied in standard lengths or roll-formed to length. Built-in or concealed gutters can preserve an architectural edge, but they make waterproofing, inspection, emergency overflow, and future access more consequential. Compare the options against the whole building detail, not appearance alone.
- Hydraulic capacity: consider cross-section, gutter slope, outlet size, number of outlets and downpipes, and local rainfall.
- Overflow path: identify where excess water will go if rainfall exceeds capacity or an outlet is blocked. NRCA recommends a lower front face than back face so excess can spill outward where the design permits. For concealed systems, provide the code-required emergency overflow and confirm its discharge route.
- Access and replacement: external gutters are generally easier to inspect and replace. Concealed gutters need particularly careful detailing where a leak could affect the wall, roof edge, or interior below.
- Installation detail: check manufacturer-approved details for fastening, joints, expansion movement, end conditions, and valley interfaces.
Size the gutter, outlets, and downpipes as one system
A gutter with adequate cross-section can still overflow if its outlet or downpipe is undersized, if too few outlets serve the run, or if a valley sends a concentrated surge into it. Size and locate the gutter, outlets, downpipes, and overflow route together under the locally adopted method.

For scale, the 2021 IPC horizontal-gutter capacity tables include examples from 26 gallons per minute for a 1½ × 2½-inch gutter at a ¼-inch-per-foot slope to 1,055 gallons per minute for a 4 × 10-inch gutter at a ½-inch-per-foot slope. These are code-table examples under specified dimensions and slopes—not recommended residential sizes or capacities for every installation. Actual selection depends on the roof catchment, rainfall, layout, and applicable code.

Do not assume that metals, coatings, fasteners, brackets, sealants, and runoff are compatible simply because each component is sold for roofing or drainage. Confirm the roof alloy or coating and the gutter system manufacturer’s requirements for fastener metals, protective coatings, separation layers, jointing, and contact with water draining from the roof. Follow restrictions on dissimilar-metal runoff.

The ABCB Housing Provisions require gutters, downpipes, and flashings to be compatible with upstream roofing materials. They also require metal components to be manufactured to AS/NZS 2179.1. The International Residential Code (IRC) requires compatible roof-assembly materials and installation in accordance with manufacturer instructions. Confirm the relevant jurisdiction and adopted edition for the project.
The 2024 IRC lists corrosion-resistant metal-roof-covering standards that include ASTM A653 G90 galvanized steel, ASTM A240 300-series stainless steel, and ASTM B209 aluminum, as well as a 0.027-inch minimum zinc thickness for the specified zinc roof material. These are roof-covering provisions, not blanket minimum specifications for gutter products; select gutter materials using their own product documentation and compatibility requirements.

Verify the installation and plan maintenance
Use the adopted code together with the exact gutter and roofing product instructions. Before installation, verify bracket spacing and support at joints and outlets, end conditions, allowance for expansion, roof-edge flashing, and valley discharge. For a concealed or internal gutter, establish the emergency overflow location and discharge path before the assembly is closed in.
Keep gutters and outlets clear of leaves and sediment. Inspect after severe weather and look for coating damage, loose brackets, open joints, ponding, or staining. Those signs can point to a blockage, leakage, or an incompatibility that needs investigation. The NZ Metal Roofing Manufacturers Code of Practice also includes maintenance guidance.
