There is no single downpipe diameter that suits every home: roof shape, gutter profile, outlet design, pipe layout, overflow route and local rules all affect the choice.
What determines the right downpipe size?
Downpipe capacity depends chiefly on the effective roof catchment served and the design rainfall used for the property’s location. A pipe that serves more than one gutter must be sized for their combined contribution, not just the gutter nearest it. The gutter, outlet and pipe therefore need to be selected as one drainage system.
- Catchment: measure the part of the roof whose runoff reaches each gutter and outlet. House floor area is not a substitute.
- Rainfall: use the intensity and calculation method specified by the rules applicable to the property. Rainfall varies by location.
- Components: check gutter capacity, outlet diameter and shape, pipe section, and the capacity of the complete route.
- Layout and discharge: account for pipe spacing, valleys, overflow and where water ultimately drains.
Codes differ, so figures from one country or code edition should not be used as universal sizing rules. For example, England’s Approved Document H (Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, 2015) and Australia’s NCC Housing Provisions use their own methods and tables. Check current amendments and local applicability before making a final selection.
How to work out what your roof needs
1. Map the roof area to each gutter run
Work out which roof surfaces drain to each gutter, then identify the area served by each outlet. A pitched roof’s effective design area can differ from its footprint on a plan because the roof slope and the local calculation convention matter.

The reserved holes on the adapter reduce the difficulty of installing onto the drainage downspout.
- 【Wide Application】- The flexible gutter downspout extension fits most residential downspouts, suitable for 2” x 3”, 3” x 3” and 3”x4” downspouts. Don't worry about your extension being washed away by the rain water. We will provide you with extra screws. You can fix the adapter to the downspout with screws.
For certain roof slopes, England’s 2015 Approved Document H uses these factors to convert plan area to effective area: multiply by 1.29 at 30°, 1.50 at 45° or 1.87 at 60°. For a pitched roof over 70° or a wall, it uses half the elevational area. Flat roofs use the relevant plan area. These are England-specific figures; Australia’s NCC uses catchment areas and its own tables, so do not transfer the English factors to another jurisdiction.
2. Find the local design rainfall
Use the rainfall intensity required for the property’s location, not a generic national assumption. England’s Approved Document H directs designers to its rainfall-intensity map for eaves gutters. The Australian NCC Housing Provisions select an appropriate five-minute-duration rainfall intensity for the location.

3. Select the gutter and outlet before the downpipe
A pipe cannot compensate for an undersized gutter outlet. England’s Approved Document H provides a table for nominal, level, half-round eaves gutters with a sharp-edged outlet at one end, subject to the table’s length assumptions. Its 2015 figures are:
| Gutter size | Maximum effective area | Outlet | Listed capacity |
|---|---|---|---|
| 75 mm | 18 m² | 50 mm | 0.38 L/s |
| 100 mm | 37 m² | 63 mm | 0.78 L/s |
| 115 mm | 53 m² | 63 mm | 1.11 L/s |
| 125 mm | 65 m² | 75 mm | 1.37 L/s |
| 150 mm | 103 m² | 89 mm | 2.16 L/s |
These capacities apply to the stated English table assumptions, not every gutter shape or outlet arrangement. Capacity may need to be reduced for other configurations; round-edged outlets may allow smaller downpipes. Wales’ Approved Document H states that a rainwater pipe should be at least the size of the gutter outlet. If one pipe serves multiple gutters, it must also be large enough for their combined contributing area and at least as large as the largest contributing outlet.

Australia’s NCC 2022 Housing Provisions have different selection tables and compatibility options. For example, they list 75 mm diameter downpipes for gutter types A through D, but not type E; listed alternatives include 90 mm round pipe and rectangular 100 mm × 50 mm or 100 mm × 75 mm pipe. Those options apply to the NCC’s defined gutter types and are not universal recommendations.
4. Check the number and position of pipes
Outlet count and spacing affect how much water each pipe must carry. Under the cited Australian NCC 2022 Housing Provisions, a downpipe must not serve more than 12 m of gutter length and should be located as close as possible to valley gutters. Other jurisdictions and roof arrangements may use different rules.

5. Plan overflow and the final discharge
Overflow needs a safe route even if the drainage system is blocked or rain exceeds the design capacity. The Australian NCC 2022 requires overflow measures that direct water away so it does not pond against, enter or damage the building. England’s Approved Document H says gutters should be laid so above-capacity overflow discharges clear of the building; flat, valley and parapet gutters may need additional outlets.
England’s 2015 Approved Document H also says rainwater pipes should discharge into a drain or gully, or onto another adequately drained surface. If discharging onto a lower roof or paved area, fit a shoe to direct water away. For an effective roof area greater than 25 m² discharged through one pipe onto a lower roof, the document describes using a distributor pipe.

In England, Building Regulations 2010 H3 requires “Adequate provision shall be made for rainwater to be carried from the roof of the building.” Its stated discharge priority is an adequate soakaway or other adequate infiltration system, then a watercourse where that is not reasonably practicable, and then a sewer where that is not reasonably practicable. Check applicable local rules and any drainage permissions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a simple sizing table is not enough
Prescriptive tables cover defined arrangements, not every roof. England’s Approved Document H says valley gutters, parapet gutters, siphonic systems and flat-roof drainage systems, as well as cases where overflow could have particularly high consequences, should be designed in accordance with BS EN 12056. Australia’s NCC has its own prescriptive method for defined eaves-gutter configurations and refers type F designs to AS/NZS 3500.3.
Get advice from an appropriately qualified drainage professional when the layout falls outside a simple local table, several roof areas combine into a pipe, or a failure could cause substantial damage. Welsh Government guidance also advises consulting a builder, architect, drainage engineer or Local Authority Building Control before committing to or starting relevant work; enlarging a roof may require larger gutters or pipes, or additional pipes.
How to choose a compatible product
Choose the product only after establishing the required capacity. Match the downpipe’s dimensions and profile to the gutter outlet and fittings, and check that the material is compatible with the existing or selected gutter system. The cited guidance supports checking system compatibility; it does not establish one material as best for every home.
Quick Recap
- Confirm the pipe’s shape and dimensions match the outlet, offsets, brackets and shoe.
- Check material compatibility across the connected components.
- Verify that the chosen pipe and outlet satisfy the local capacity method for the catchment and rainfall.
- Make sure brackets and fittings suit the route and that the outlet can be maintained.
