The right compact track loader (CTL) is sized for the heaviest routine load and attachment your crew will handle, then checked against ground conditions, lift path, hydraulic requirements, site access and transport limits. Start with the machine’s rated operating capacity (ROC)—not its tipping load or an average bucket load—and verify every specification for the exact model and configuration. Tracks earn their cost mainly where flotation, traction and low surface disturbance matter; a wheeled skid steer can be more economical for frequent work on firm pavement. Use the process below to create a practical shortlist for dealer demonstrations and written quotes.
What a compact track loader does—and when it is the right carrier
A CTL is a compact loader carried on continuous rubber tracks. The tracks spread the machine’s weight over more ground-contact area than tires, which can improve flotation and traction on soft, muddy, sandy or uneven ground and reduce disturbance to sensitive surfaces. A CTL can carry buckets, forks, augers, breakers, graders, mulchers and other tools, allowing one carrier to perform loading, carrying, grading, site preparation, land clearing and demolition preparation.

Tracks are not automatically the best choice. On predominantly hard or paved ground, the flotation advantage is smaller, travel can be slower than with a wheeled skid steer, and track and undercarriage wear can cost more than tires and wheels. Weather, the proportion of soft versus firm work, maintenance practices and annual utilization determine which platform is financially sensible. Treat the machine as a system—carrier, undercarriage, attachments, operator and transport plan—rather than choosing by horsepower or bucket size alone.

Use rated operating capacity, not tipping load
Write down the heaviest material load that the loader will routinely carry, including the attachment that will carry it. Compare that requirement with the exact model’s published rated operating capacity (ROC). ROC is the relevant rated carrying measure for normal selection; tipping load is a separate stability limit and should not be used as a substitute. Both ratings are manufacturer- and machine-specific, so confirm the rating convention and operating instructions in the model documentation.

Size for the repeatable work cycle, not a rare maximum. A loader that is marginal when the bucket is full may force partial loads, extra passes and unsafe shortcuts. Conversely, buying far more capacity than the site needs can increase purchase, transport and wear costs. Ask the dealer to show ROC and tipping-load figures for the intended configuration, including the chosen coupler, counterweight or other options.
Convert material volume into weight
Bucket volume alone does not tell you whether a loader can safely carry the load. Soil, aggregate, demolition debris, mulch and wet material have different densities, and moisture can make a routine bucket substantially heavier. Record the material type, expected density or supplier weight, typical fill level and the attachment’s own weight. Use the resulting load to screen machines by ROC, then confirm the manufacturer’s lift chart at the reach and height you actually need.
- List each recurring material and its heaviest normal load.
- Add the weight of the bucket, forks or other attachment.
- Check ROC for the exact machine, lift configuration and operating conditions.
- Keep tipping load as a separate stability reference rather than a carrying target.
Match the undercarriage to the ground
Where tracks provide a practical advantage
Rubber tracks distribute weight over a larger contact area than tires. On saturated soil, mud, sand, loose fill or uneven terrain, that can improve flotation and traction and help limit rutting. Tracks are also useful when a project moves repeatedly between rough ground and areas where reduced surface disturbance is valuable. The benefit is greatest when those conditions make up a meaningful share of the loader’s working hours.

When a wheeled skid steer may fit better
On hard, paved or compacted surfaces, the flotation benefit diminishes. A wheeled skid steer may travel faster on those surfaces and generally has lower tire, wheel and wear-part costs. CTL tracks and undercarriage components can be expensive to replace, and abrasive travel, incorrect tension or excessive operation on unsuitable surfaces can accelerate wear. The correct comparison is your actual surface mix, weather pattern, travel distance, maintenance capacity and utilization—not a blanket rule that tracks are always superior.
| Primary working surface | Track-related consideration | Alternative to evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Muddy, saturated, sandy or soft soil | Tracks can improve flotation and traction and reduce ground disturbance. | A CTL is usually the first platform to compare. |
| Uneven terrain | Continuous tracks provide a larger contact area for traction. | Compare CTL stability, ground pressure and tread options. |
| Mostly hard or paved ground | Flotation advantage is reduced; track and undercarriage wear still applies. | Evaluate a wheeled skid steer for travel speed and lower tire-related cost. |
Choose track width and tread for the dominant surface
Track width changes how the machine bears on the ground. Wider tracks can improve flotation on soft soil; narrower tracks can apply more pressure and push harder on firm ground. Tread pattern also affects traction, vibration, surface disturbance and wear. Select the platform first, then confirm which widths and tread designs are approved for that exact machine.
A September 2026 guide from Bobcat describes six tread patterns across 320 mm, 400 mm and 450 mm widths in that manufacturer’s range. Those dimensions and pattern choices are not universal across brands or platforms. Treat them as an example of the decisions available in one range, not as a market-wide standard.

| 400 mm | Intermediate width for balancing flotation, traction and access on the compatible platform. |
| 450 mm | Wider footprint can improve flotation on soft soil; verify clearance and fitment. |
Do not order replacement tracks by width alone. Confirm the machine platform, tread pattern, width, undercarriage design and operating surface. A physically similar track can be incompatible or change the machine’s ground pressure and handling.

Radial lift
A radial lift arm follows an outward arc as it rises. It is suited to ground-level digging, grading and breakout, where the work is concentrated near the machine’s front and lower reach. Compare the model’s actual breakout force, reach and ROC at the working height rather than assuming that every radial machine has the same performance.
Vertical lift
A vertical lift path keeps the load closer to the machine as it rises and generally offers more reach and lift height for loading trucks, skips or elevated bins. It is useful when the work cycle is dominated by placing material over a sideboard or into a high receptacle. Check the exact dump height, forward reach, sightlines and ROC at that position; the lift-arm label alone is not a guarantee of capacity.
| Work cycle | Lift path to investigate | Measurements to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Ground-level digging, grading and breakout | Radial lift | Breakout, reach, grading control and ROC at the digging height. |
| Truck, skip or elevated-bin loading | Vertical lift | Lift height, dump height, forward reach, sightlines and ROC at full height. |
Choose attachments before you finalize hydraulics
Make an attachment list before selecting the final hydraulic package. A coupler that physically connects does not prove that the machine can power the tool safely or productively. For every attachment, verify:
- Coupler and mounting compatibility.
- Attachment weight and its effect on ROC and stability.
- Required auxiliary hydraulic flow and pressure.
- Electrical connections or control requirements, where applicable.
- Expected duty cycle and whether the attachment will be used occasionally or every day.
Standard flow versus high flow
Many everyday tools operate on a standard auxiliary circuit. Power-demanding tools such as brush cutters, cold planers and high-output snow blowers may require high-flow hydraulics. Compare the attachment manufacturer’s flow and pressure requirements with the loader’s published output at the intended engine speed. Do not infer capability from the coupler, engine horsepower or a sales description.

Check access, dimensions and transport before committing
A high-performing loader is a poor project fit if it cannot enter the site or be legally and safely transported. Measure the narrowest gate, the lowest overhead obstruction and any turning pinch point. Compare those measurements with the machine’s published width, height and operating weight in the exact configuration, including the chosen tracks, cab, counterweight and attachment.
Then compare operating weight plus attachment, tie-down equipment and other cargo with the truck and trailer’s payload and towing limits. Confirm the transport arrangement and applicable local rules with the dealer or transport provider; requirements vary by jurisdiction, and general manufacturer guidance is not legal advice. Record the route to the site as well as the site entrance—bridge limits, narrow roads and loading areas can be as restrictive as the gate.
- Measure the narrowest entrance and lowest overhead clearance.
- Measure the loading area and turning space needed to position the machine.
- Record the loader’s operating weight and dimensions in the intended configuration.
- Add attachment and transport equipment weight to the payload calculation.
- Verify truck, trailer and towing limits and obtain jurisdiction-specific transport guidance.
Compare candidate machines on equivalent configurations
Request model documentation for each candidate and compare equivalent equipment. A bare-carrier specification against a fully equipped machine can make a meaningful difference look larger or smaller than it is. Use this checklist:

Evaluate lifecycle cost without relying on a sticker price
Current purchase prices, dealer inventory, financing eligibility and rental rates vary by territory and configuration. Obtain written quotes for equivalent machines and attachments rather than treating a published base price as a project cost. Include delivery, taxes or fees applicable to your location, transport equipment and any hydraulic or coupler options required for the work.
Ownership cost includes more than the initial machine. Track or tire wear, undercarriage parts, scheduled maintenance, attachment wear, fuel, downtime and service travel all affect the cost per productive hour. Manufacturer guidance notes that skid-steer tires and wheels generally cost less than CTL tracks and undercarriage parts, while maintenance, operation and productivity can change the overall comparison. There is no single independent lifecycle-cost figure that applies to every site.
- Ask for the expected service intervals and parts availability for the exact model.
- Price replacement tracks or tires, undercarriage components and common attachment wear parts.
- Estimate downtime consequences if the loader is your only carrier.
- Compare the value of one versatile carrier against the cost of multiple specialized machines.
- For short-term or uneven utilization, investigate local rental as an option; confirm rates, delivery and attachment availability locally.
Arrange a demonstration that mirrors the real work
A demonstration is most useful when it uses the attachment, material and loading height your crew expects. Ask the dealer to configure the machine as it will be delivered, then run the complete work cycle rather than a single lift.

Common selection mistakes and how to avoid them
Choosing by bucket volume alone
Bucket volume ignores material density and attachment weight. Convert the heaviest normal load to weight, compare it with ROC and verify the lift chart at the required reach.
Using tipping load as the payload target
Tipping load is a stability limit, not the normal carrying rating. Use ROC for routine sizing and keep the two figures distinct in your comparison sheet.
Assuming tracks eliminate surface damage
Tracks can reduce disturbance relative to tires in some conditions, but turning, abrasive surfaces, incorrect tension and unsuitable tread can still damage ground and accelerate wear. Match the undercarriage to the dominant surface and operating technique.
Buying high flow because an attachment fits
Mechanical fit does not establish hydraulic compatibility. Check flow, pressure, electrical requirements and the attachment’s duty cycle before ordering the hydraulic option.

Decision examples for typical construction work
Soft-ground site preparation
If a crew spends most of its time on wet subgrade, loose fill and uneven ground, begin with a CTL and compare wider compatible tracks for flotation. Size ROC to the heaviest routine bucket or grading attachment, then confirm that the machine can be transported on the available trailer. A wheeled skid steer should still be considered if a substantial portion of the work occurs on paved roads or finished surfaces.
Urban truck loading and utility work
For repeated truck or bin loading, prioritize the lift path, dump height, forward reach and sightlines. A vertical-lift candidate may fit the cycle, but confirm the actual ROC at full height and the machine’s width through gates. If the site is mostly firm pavement, include a wheeled alternative in the cost comparison.
Land clearing with a high-demand attachment
List the mulcher or brush cutter first. Verify high-flow requirements, pressure, electrical controls, attachment weight and the carrier’s ROC. Then check track width, tread and undercarriage suitability for the terrain, plus transport payload with the attachment removed or secured according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
A purchase-ready shortlist checklist
- Heaviest routine material and attachment load documented.
- Exact-model ROC and tipping load recorded separately.
- Operating weight, width and height checked against site and transport limits.
- Ground conditions and dominant surface identified.
- Track width, tread and platform compatibility confirmed.
- Radial or vertical lift selected from the material path.
- Coupler, attachment weight, hydraulic flow, pressure and electrical needs verified.
- Service, wear-part, downtime and dealer-support questions answered in writing.
- Demonstration completed with a representative attachment and work cycle.
- Model year, region, options, warranty and quote configuration recorded for every candidate.
Use the completed checklist to narrow the field to machines that can carry the routine load, perform the work cycle, reach the site and be supported at a realistic ownership cost. The final choice should come from the exact model documentation, a representative demonstration and a transport-and-service plan—not from a single headline specification.
