There is no single weed killer that is best for every lawn and garden. For weeds in a lawn you want to keep, choose a selective product whose current label lists both the target weed and your grass type. Broad-spectrum glyphosate is a different option for label-approved lawn renovation or non-lawn sites; it is not a selective treatment for weeds among turf you want to preserve. The regulatory information here is from the United States, and product approvals and uses differ by country.
Start with the weed, the grass, and the job
Before choosing a product, identify the weed, determine whether it is broadleaf or grassy, and identify the turf species around it. Then decide whether you are spot-treating an established lawn, treating another site, or renovating an area where existing vegetation can be removed. These details matter because herbicide selectivity and permitted uses depend on the specific product label.
- Weed: Check that the product label names the weed or weed group you want to control.
- Turf: Check that your grass species and lawn site are listed for that product.
- Goal: Distinguish control within established turf from renovation or treatment where desirable plants may also be affected.
- Application: Follow the product’s listed application method, timing, precautions, and local requirements.
For weeds in a lawn you want to keep, choose a selective product by label fit
A selective lawn herbicide is the appropriate product pathway when you want to control listed weeds while retaining compatible turf. “Selective” does not mean safe for every grass or effective against every weed: the exact weeds, lawn sites, and turf types on the current label determine whether a product fits.
For example, the U.S. EPA registration record for Triple Selective Herbicide lists 2,4-D, MCPP-P, and 2,4-DP-P as active ingredients and identifies particular lawn sites and broadleaf weeds. Its accepted label dates to 2009, so the record illustrates a selective-herbicide category and label-specific approach; it is not a current-use recommendation or a universal weed-control list. Check the current label for any product you consider.

- Allows for planting 1 to 30 days after application (see booklet for details)

For renovation or non-lawn sites, treat glyphosate as a separate option
Glyphosate is broad-spectrum and can affect non-target plants. The U.S. EPA notes that spray drift can expose nearby plants and discusses drift-mitigation instructions on newer labels. It should not be presented as a selective way to remove weeds from turf you want to keep.
One EPA registration record for a glyphosate 41% concentrate lists ornamental lawn renovation among its sites. That is a product-specific label example, not permission to use every glyphosate product for renovation. The record contains accepted labels through 2019; read the current label for the particular product and use it only for listed sites and directions.

Read the current label before buying or applying
Registration records and active-ingredient names do not replace the directions for the product in your hands. EPA says a pesticide can be registered only if the agency determines it meets the federal safety standard when used according to its label. The label is the practical decision rule for the weeds and sites permitted, compatible turf, application method, timing, precautions, and any other requirements.
EPA reports that its 2017 glyphosate human-health risk assessment did not identify risks of concern for the uses it evaluated, and that it is updating that assessment, with completion anticipated in late 2026. That anticipated date is not a completed finding or a guarantee about every product, exposure, or use. EPA says glyphosate was first registered in the United States in 1974.
Use application equipment only as the label allows
A handheld garden sprayer may be suitable for spot treatment only if the product label permits that application method. EPA describes liquid formulations and ground sprayers, but does not endorse a particular consumer sprayer or establish that a specific device improves results. Choose equipment based on the label’s directions and precautions, rather than assuming any sprayer is compatible.

The cited EPA materials support choosing by label and distinguishing selective lawn treatment from broad-spectrum uses. They do not provide a controlled head-to-head efficacy trial, a universal ranking of brands or formulations, or evidence that one product performs best across climates and turf varieties. They also do not establish which products are registered, legal, or available outside the United States. Check the current label and applicable local rules where you live.
