The best wall vent cap for a range hood is one that matches the hood’s specified duct size and venting instructions. Confirm the duct diameter and shape first; then compare the cap’s material, finish, backdraft damper, bird screen, and fit against the exterior wall. Broan-NuTone’s 641 and 843BL are examples for 6-inch round duct—not universal choices.
Start with the range hood’s duct requirements
Check the hood’s installation manual and outlet before buying a cap. The cap must match the duct diameter and shape, and the hood instructions determine the permitted venting arrangement. A 6-inch cap is appropriate only when the hood and duct system call for 6-inch round duct.
Broan-NuTone lists other sizes and configurations in its roof and wall cap catalog. Do not use airflow-band suggestions from a general vent guide as a substitute for the selected hood’s specifications. Lambro publishes its own duct-diameter and airflow guidance, but those are Lambro’s suggestions rather than universal sizing criteria: Lambro wall vent guidance.

Choose between compatible options based on the exterior appearance, material, and how the flange will meet the wall finish. The cited product descriptions do not provide independent comparative testing or establish a best-overall winner.
Check the damper arrangement before installation
A wall cap may include a backdraft damper, and some range hoods have a damper supplied with the unit. Avoid installing two dampers by assumption: consult the actual hood instructions for the required arrangement.

For the hood covered by Whirlpool’s Installation Instructions 9763370, Whirlpool says to use the damper supplied with its hood, but not to use that hood-supplied damper when the wall or roof cap has a damper. This is model-specific guidance, not a universal rule for every hood.

A wall cap is the exterior termination for a ducted range hood; it is not a substitute for the duct route specified by the appliance manufacturer. Whirlpool’s reviewed instructions state that the vent must terminate outdoors, require metal venting, recommend rigid metal duct, and warn against four-inch laundry-type wall caps. These directions apply to the referenced Whirlpool instructions. Check the manual for the hood being installed and the requirements that apply to the project location rather than treating one manufacturer’s instructions as a universal code rule.
