The best small refrigerator is the one that fits its opening, stores what you need, and keeps food at a safe temperature—not simply the one with the smallest footprint. Compare exact outside dimensions, installation clearances, usable configuration, and annual energy use before choosing. ENERGY STAR defines a compact refrigerator or refrigerator-freezer as under 7.75 cubic feet, but “small” is not a precise capacity label across all retailers.
What size small refrigerator should you get?
Start with the space and the job the refrigerator needs to do. Capacity in cubic feet describes interior volume; height, width, and depth determine whether the appliance can be installed where you want it. A compact appliance can still be too tall, too deep, or awkward to open in a particular room.

Measure the opening, not just the appliance
- Measure the opening’s height, width, and depth, including any trim, countertop overhang, or other obstruction.
- Check the product’s listed external dimensions and the installation manual’s required clearances. Allow for airflow and make sure the door can swing open far enough to reach shelves and drawers.
- Confirm whether the model is designed to be freestanding or built in. Do not assume that a refrigerator fits beneath a counter simply because its height is below the counter height; ventilation and installation requirements vary by model.
- Check the manual for electrical requirements and any restrictions on placement. DOE advises choosing an appropriately sized appliance; larger refrigerators generally use more energy. DOE FEMP’s refrigerator purchasing guidance explains sizing considerations.
Match capacity and layout to what you store
Think through the items you expect to keep cold: drinks and snacks, groceries for a small apartment, or occasional overflow. Then check how the interior is arranged. Shelf adjustability, door bins, and the shape of the freezer compartment can affect whether the stated capacity works for your routine. Capacity alone does not establish usable space, and no independent comparative usable-space testing is established here.
Decide whether you need a refrigerator-only unit or a refrigerator-freezer. If you need frozen food storage, check the freezer compartment’s size and defrost type in the model specifications rather than assuming that every compact refrigerator includes a useful freezer.

How to compare energy use
Compare annual energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh) among refrigerators with similar capacity and configuration. The EnergyGuide label and the current ENERGY STAR certified refrigerator product data can help you compare models. A low figure for a much smaller or differently configured appliance is not necessarily a like-for-like comparison.
What ENERGY STAR certification tells you
For compact refrigerators and refrigerator-freezers under 7.75 cubic feet, ENERGY STAR’s criteria require at least 10% less measured energy use than the federal minimum standard. The compact criteria were changed August 5, 2021; see ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator criteria. The program also says certified refrigerators overall are about 9% more energy efficient than models meeting the federal minimum standard. That broader figure is not a compact-only result.
Certification is an efficiency screen, not a complete quality rating. It does not establish a refrigerator’s noise, durability, service quality, fit in your room, or whether its freezer suits your needs. Verify the specific model’s current certification and specifications when you shop.

Configuration can affect consumption
ENERGY STAR says top-freezer models tend to use less energy than bottom-freezer or side-by-side models, and that fewer doors reduce air leakage. These are general tendencies, not guarantees for every compact refrigerator. Compare annual kWh within similar size and configuration groups, then weigh the layout against your needs. See ENERGY STAR’s refrigerator buying guidance.
Energy-cost examples for full-size refrigerators should not be applied directly to compact models. DOE FEMP’s illustrative calculation, updated December 2023, uses an 18.1-cubic-foot automatic-defrost top-freezer refrigerator, a federal-site electricity cost assumption of $0.099 per kWh, and an assumed 16.2-year product life. It estimates $45 in lifetime savings for an ENERGY STAR model when its price is no more than $45 (2022 dollars) above a less-efficient model. Those assumptions do not make it a compact-fridge savings estimate.
Will a small refrigerator fit under a counter?
Only if the exact model’s dimensions and installation instructions allow it. The product’s height is just one part of the fit: airflow clearance, counter overhang, door swing, and whether the refrigerator is approved for built-in installation also matter. Check the manual for that model rather than relying on a universal clearance number; the official guidance does not establish one clearance dimension for all refrigerators.

For a freestanding unit, ENERGY STAR advises leaving a few inches behind the refrigerator for air circulation and keeping it away from heat sources such as an oven or direct sunlight. Follow the manufacturer’s placement instructions if they specify different clearances. Poor placement can make cooling less efficient. ENERGY STAR’s guidance also recommends checking door seals and consulting the manual before cleaning coils.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How cold should a compact refrigerator be?
For food safety, the FDA says the refrigerator should be at or below 40°F and the freezer at 0°F. ENERGY STAR recommends a refrigerator operating temperature of 35–38°F. These recommendations serve different purposes: 40°F is the FDA’s maximum for refrigerator food safety, while 35–38°F is ENERGY STAR’s recommended operating range. Use a freestanding refrigerator thermometer to check the actual temperature, since few refrigerator controls display it.
What model information should you verify?
Use official model-level data to check fit and efficiency rather than relying on the words “mini” or “compact” in a product listing. For example, ENERGY STAR’s record for the Comfee CRR16S3ABB lists a 1.7-cubic-foot compact refrigerator with a manual defrost system, annual energy use of 208 kWh, and dimensions of 19.4 inches high by 18.6 inches wide. The record shows certification dated December 13, 2022, and markets of the United States and Canada. View its ENERGY STAR record. This is an example of the information available in a certified-model record, not a recommendation or a claim about current availability.
Before buying any model, confirm its current product specifications, certification status, installation type, clearance requirements, door swing, voltage, temperature controls, freezer arrangement, and warranty terms directly with the manufacturer or retailer. Availability, prices, rebates, and certification status can change.
Quick Recap
How to place and maintain a compact refrigerator
- Keep the refrigerator away from heat sources and provide the clearance specified in its manual.
- Check that door seals close properly; damaged or loose seals can let cold air escape.
- Consult the manual before cleaning coils. Some refrigerators may require different care, and the manufacturer’s instructions take precedence.
- Use an appliance thermometer to verify safe operating temperatures rather than assuming a dial setting corresponds to a particular temperature.
