There is no single best freestanding gas range for every kitchen. Start by measuring the installation opening and confirming the home’s gas, electrical, ventilation, and clearance requirements; then compare burner layout, oven capacity, cooking modes, cleaning options, and controls against the way you cook. A model that fits your space and installation conditions is a better choice than one selected by feature count alone.
What makes a gas range freestanding?
A freestanding range typically has finished sides and a rear backguard, and is designed to stand alone or fit between cabinets. Controls are often on the backguard, but layouts vary. These are category characteristics, not guarantees for every model; confirm the exact configuration, dimensions, and installation requirements in the selected range’s specifications and manual. Measure the space before comparing features
Record the opening’s width, depth, and height, then compare those measurements with the exact model’s specifications and required clearances. Check where the backguard, controls, doors, and handles sit in relation to counters, walls, and nearby appliances. A nominal width is not a complete installed-dimension or clearance specification.
Whirlpool’s chart includes 24-inch compact examples and 30-inch full-size examples, but those figures describe its product range, not universal fit standards. Verify the chosen model’s installation guide rather than assuming a stated category width guarantees it will fit.

Choose the cooktop and oven for how you cook
Burners and layout
Compare the number and placement of burners, grate arrangement, and how easy the surfaces are to clean. Think about your routine: frequent high-heat cooking may make a larger burner useful, while low-flame cooking may make a smaller burner and its simmer control more important. Whirlpool notes these use cases, but burner output and real-world performance vary by model; compare the specifications rather than relying on a general feature label. Capacity and cooking modes
Match oven capacity to the size of the meals and cookware you typically use. Compare single- and double-oven configurations, convection, and other cooking modes only where they address a real need. Whirlpool’s comparison chart lists different capacities and features for its models; manufacturer feature descriptions are not independent tests of baking or roasting performance. Cleaning and controls
Compare the available cleaning method and control location, and decide whether connected features would be useful in your household. Cleaning labels and marketing descriptions do not establish that one range is easier to maintain in everyday use. Confirm what is included on the exact model, since features differ across product lines.
Confirm installation and ventilation requirements
Before purchase, verify the fuel type and supply, electrical connection, clearances, and applicable local requirements for the selected range. Gas ranges may also require a grounded electrical supply. Whirlpool’s December 2024 owner’s manual specifies proper gas supply, grounded power, unobstructed combustion and ventilation air, and compliance with applicable codes and clearances for the model covered by that manual. Requirements are model-specific, so follow the manual supplied for the range you buy. Read the referenced Whirlpool manual and consult a qualified installer.

Do not install or handle gas connections or lines yourself. LG’s installation guidance likewise warns against DIY work on gas connections. Use a qualified professional and follow the requirements that apply to your home and appliance.
Include ventilation in the installation plan. Whirlpool recommends considering options such as a range hood to help clear cooking smoke, odors, and steam. The appropriate setup depends on the appliance, kitchen, hood instructions, and local requirements; the available guidance does not establish one universal hood size or airflow rating. Make anti-tip protection non-negotiable
Install the anti-tip bracket specified for the range and follow the model’s instructions. Whirlpool’s owner’s manual states, “The anti-tip bracket must be installed.” The bracket is a critical safety measure, not an optional accessory. Use the instructions for the specific model, and confirm with the installer that the bracket is correctly fitted.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reported that its staff was aware of 38 fatalities associated with range tipovers from 1980 through 2008; 20, or 53 percent, involved children aged one through five. The agency also reported awareness of 84 injuries from January 1, 1980, through December 31, 2006, most described as burns from hot liquids spilled when pots or pans tipped as the range tilted.
