Choose its capacity based on both the room’s area and how damp it is, then check whether it can operate at the room’s coldest typical temperature and whether its bucket or hose drainage suits the layout. ENERGY STAR’s capacity ranges are useful general guidance, not a sunroom-specific sizing formula.
What size dehumidifier does a sunroom need?
Measure the room and check its relative humidity (RH) before buying. A digital hygrometer can help establish RH; note conditions before the dehumidifier is running. Capacity is generally stated in pints of water removed per 24 hours, and the needed capacity depends on both area and the moisture conditions. ENERGY STAR advises choosing a unit with more capacity rather than less.
ENERGY STAR’s general chart gives these ranges for portable units:

These are broad ENERGY STAR recommendations, not a calculation for a particular sunroom. Glass area, air leakage, the source of moisture and operating temperature can all affect performance. Use the chart as a starting point and check the current capacity rating and manufacturer’s guidance for the model.

Pay attention to the rating method when comparing capacities. The U.S. Department of Energy’s newer portable-dehumidifier test procedure uses 65°F rather than 80°F, so newer pint-per-day ratings may be lower than older labels. A current rating and an older rating are not directly comparable as if they were measured under the same conditions. See the DOE test-procedure information.
Will a dehumidifier work in a cold sunroom?
It may, but low temperatures can reduce a compressor dehumidifier’s ability to remove moisture. Below 65°F, ENERGY STAR recommends looking for a model specified for lower-temperature operation. Check the chosen unit’s manual for its actual operating limits rather than assuming all models behave alike.

In a cold room, frost can form on the coils. The compressor may then cycle repeatedly without removing much moisture. Some models have an anti-frost sensor that helps manage this condition; confirm whether the model has one and what temperature range its manufacturer specifies.
Which features are worth comparing?
- Capacity: Compare pints per day under the current rating method, accounting for the sunroom’s area and dampness.
- Energy efficiency: Compare integrated energy factor (IEF), measured in liters of water removed per kilowatt-hour. A higher IEF generally indicates greater efficiency. ENERGY STAR says certified dehumidifiers are 20% more efficient than non-certified models. Its current Version 6.0 final specification is dated August 21, 2024, and the program’s version page says the specification is under development or revision; check the ENERGY STAR criteria and version status for current details.
- Low-temperature operation: Check the stated operating range and whether the unit has defrost or anti-frost protection.
- Humidistat and controls: ENERGY STAR says certified units include a built-in humidistat, which lets you set a target RH. Confirm the controls meet your needs.
- Drainage: Compare bucket capacity and full-bucket shutoff with the option of continuous drainage through a compatible hose.
- Fit and placement: Check dimensions, noise information and placement requirements in the model’s documentation; these vary by unit.
How do you drain a dehumidifier continuously?
Some portable units accept a hose that carries water to a floor drain or sump pump. Check the manual to confirm that the specific model supports continuous drainage and which hose fitting it requires. The drain must be reachable, and the hose must be routed safely to its destination. If the model uses a bucket instead, expect it to stop when the bucket is full and require emptying.

Portable or whole-home dehumidifier?
A portable unit is usually the more direct choice when the moisture problem is limited to one sunroom. A whole-home system may be worth considering if humidity remains above 55% throughout a well-sealed home with central air. ENERGY STAR advises that whole-home dehumidifiers need correct professional sizing and installation; they are not simply a larger portable unit.

ENERGY STAR describes 30% to 50% RH as a generally considered optimum range for buildings. For colder climates during heating season, it gives 30% to 40% as guidance to help prevent window condensation.
