The best automatic toaster is the one that fits your household’s toast volume, the bread you eat, and the space available on your counter. Without comparable, current independent test results for specific models, there is no defensible universal winner. Use the guide below to narrow the form factor and features that matter, then compare model-specific test results and ownership details.
Choose capacity around household and counter space
A 2-slice toaster is usually the more compact choice for a small household or a limited counter. A 4-slice model can make more toast at once, which may suit a family, but it can take up more room. Capacity labels do not tell the whole story: some 4-slice toasters have four short slots, while others use two long slots. Compare the actual layout and footprint before choosing. Check whether the controls suit your routine
If people want different browning levels or toast different kinds of bread at the same time, look for controls that operate independently for each pair of slots. A shared control may be simpler and sufficient when everyone uses the toaster in the same way. Confirm the control arrangement in the model’s specifications rather than assuming it from the slice count.
Match slot shape and size to your bread
Standard short slots can be awkward for long sourdough slices or larger artisan bread. Wide or long slots can provide more flexibility, but “wide” and “long” are not precise measures of fit. Check the slot dimensions and compare them with the bread you actually buy, including its thickness and length. If your usual slices do not fit comfortably, a larger capacity alone will not solve the problem. The Breville Die-Cast 2-Slice Smart Toaster (BTA820), for example, is a 2-slice model whose US product page describes extra-wide slots; that specification is an example, not evidence that it toasts better than alternatives.

Compare toast quality with independent results
Prioritize test evidence on how evenly a toaster browns, how consistently it repeats results, and how much of each slice it covers. A shade dial or a manufacturer’s claim does not establish that toast will be even. CHOICE identifies evenness and repeatability as relevant comparisons, while Which?’s test description covers evenness, browning coverage, usability, bread fit, and speed. Check that any comparison evaluates the exact models you are considering; there is not enough model-specific independent evidence here to name an overall best toaster.
Assess convenience features and cleaning
Useful features depend on the food you make and how you use the toaster. A high-lift function can help retrieve smaller items; a “Lift and Look” control can let you check browning without ending the cycle; and a frozen setting or bagel mode may suit particular routines. Automated or motorized lowering is another convenience, not a guarantee of better toast. Decide which features solve a real need rather than treating a longer feature list as a quality score. For upkeep, check for a removable crumb tray and consult the model’s manual for care instructions. Unplug the toaster before cleaning and empty the tray regularly. If longevity matters, investigate whether replacement parts are available for the exact model and review the warranty terms. Do not use price as a proxy for performance
Price can reflect features, materials, or positioning, but it does not establish how evenly or consistently a toaster browns bread. CHOICE reported that the models in its latest toaster reviews ranged from AUD $7.50 to AUD $525 and cautioned that price is not always an indicator of performance or product quality. That is an Australia-specific range reported in its guide, not a current price comparison for other markets. Check model-specific safety and availability
Do not assume every toaster has the same safety features. A Consumer Reports search-result excerpt says the toasters it tested had automatic shut-off, but that does not establish that all models on the market do. Check the exact model’s manual and specifications for shut-off behavior and other safety instructions.
Product pages can also change: specifications, prices, and stock vary by market and date. The Breville US page lists the BTA820 and describes features including variable browning control, automated lowering, “A Bit More,” bagel and frozen functions, and a front removable crumb tray. Its displayed US price was $199.95 on 8 October 2026; verify current price and availability before buying. This is a manufacturer listing, not an independent performance result. A practical comparison checklist
- Capacity: Is two-slice output enough, or would four slices save time?
- Counter fit: Measure the space available and compare the toaster’s dimensions.
- Slot layout: Are the slots long or wide enough for your usual bread?
