The most sustainable timber is not a species name. It is wood that is technically suitable for its job, comes from a verifiable source, lasts with reasonable maintenance, and can be repaired, reused or responsibly disposed of. Choose the application and exposure first; then verify the forest-origin claim, the supplier’s certificate scope and the paperwork that connects the exact product to that claim. Finally, compare whole-life carbon at product or project level rather than assuming that any timber is automatically lower-carbon.
Start with the job, not the species
Structural framing, engineered beams, cladding, flooring, windows, doors, cabinetry and decorative joinery place different demands on wood. A species that performs well as interior flooring may be unsuitable for an exposed façade; reclaimed boards may be ideal for a feature wall but inappropriate for a load-bearing beam without engineering verification.

Define the application
- Structural work: establish the required strength grade, dimensions, moisture condition, fire performance, connection details and inspection requirements.
- Exterior work: assess rain, splash, sunlight, ventilation, ground contact and the durability class needed for the local exposure.
- Interior finishes: consider wear, movement, moisture, appearance, repairability and the finish system.
- Windows, doors and joinery: account for dimensional stability, coatings, joints and replacement of individual components.
- Engineered products: confirm the product standard, adhesive system, emissions information and design values rather than treating an engineered panel or beam as interchangeable with solid wood.
Your designer, structural engineer, building-control professional or local authority must confirm code, grade, treatment and installation requirements for your jurisdiction. The evidence available here does not establish local engineering or building-code compliance.
Record the exposure and service-life target
Write down where the timber will be used, how it will be protected, the expected service life, maintenance access and whether parts can be removed without destroying adjacent work. Designing for dry details, replaceable boards and accessible fixings can keep timber in service longer than choosing a nominally “greener” product that is difficult to maintain.

What certification can—and cannot—tell you
Forest certification is evidence about forest management and supply-chain traceability. It is not a certificate for the environmental performance of an entire house, and it does not by itself prove the lowest whole-life carbon.
FSC and PEFC are systems, not a single universal claim
FSC and PEFC use different standards, labels and claim rules. Compare the exact claim attached to the product, not just the presence of a logo. PEFC describes audited forest-management systems and chain-of-custody records that track certified material between certified organisations (PEFC UK’s construction guidance). FSC explains project, component and percentage claims and how records are collected across a project (FSC project certification guidance).
A statement such as “sustainably managed” without a scheme, certificate code, product scope and sales-document claim is not enough to verify what you are buying. A mixed or percentage claim may cover only a defined share of the material, not every fibre in the product.
Ask for a documentary chain from product to forest claim
- Ask the supplier to name the species or product, certification scheme, precise claim and certificate code.
- Check the certificate in the relevant FSC or PEFC database and confirm that it is current.
- Read the scope: it must include the product category, material and activities involved in your purchase.
- Require the claim and certificate code on the quotation, invoice or delivery record for the relevant line item.
- Keep those records with the project file, including documents from subcontractors who supply or install certified timber.
FSC’s project guidance states: “Make sure to require invoice including the company’s certificate code and products identified as certified with their FSC claim by line item.” FSC UK likewise advises checking certificate validity and scope and specifying the required claim when ordering (FSC UK construction guidance). A logo on a website, sample or pallet is not a substitute for this paper trail.
Project certification and green-building credits
FSC project certification can be organised for a whole project, a defined component or a percentage claim. Decide the boundary before procurement so every contractor knows which purchases must be documented. FSC UK and PEFC UK describe possible recognition under schemes such as BREEAM or LEED, but eligibility depends on the rating system, project version, credit wording and material scope. Verify the current rules before specifying timber for a credit.

UK public-procurement evidence is context-specific
For UK government supply, Defra recognises Category A evidence from schemes including FSC, PEFC and Grown in Britain, alongside Category B evidence consisting of other credible proof that the forest meets legality and sustainability requirements (Defra’s Category B evidence guidance). This is a UK procurement framework, not a universal rule for private homes or projects in other countries.
Compare candidate timbers using the same decision axes
Put the options in a schedule and assess each against the same criteria. A supplier’s certification may be excellent while the product is wrong for the exposure; a nearby reclaimed board may have low transport impact but fail the required structural grade.
| Criterion | Questions to answer | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Technical fit | Is the grade, size, moisture condition, durability and fire performance suitable for the intended role? | Product standard, grading documents, design values and professional approval |
| Origin and claim | Where was the forest or recovered material located, and what exact claim applies? | Scheme, claim, certificate code and supplier documentation |
| Certificate scope | Does the certificate cover this species, product category and supplier activity? | Current database record and scope statement |
| Availability | Can the required quantity arrive when the project needs it? | Written lead time, allocation and substitution rules |
| Durability and maintenance | How often will it need coating, inspection or replacement? | Durability information, installation details and maintenance plan |
| Whole-life carbon | What boundaries include forestry, processing, transport, use, maintenance and end of life? | Product-specific environmental data or project assessment |
| Cost and rating needs | What is the installed cost and does the project require a particular certification or rating? | Comparable quotations and current rating criteria |
Choose a species only after the requirements are fixed
There is no evidence-based, universal “most sustainable” species. Suitability depends on region, use, exposure, available grades, processing, transport and service life. Ask the designer or engineer to approve alternatives rather than selecting by reputation alone.
Local and lesser-known species
Local timber can reduce lead times and some transport emissions while supporting nearby sawmills and jobs, but “local” does not guarantee responsible forestry or lower whole-life impact. FSC UK gives Douglas fir, oak and larch as examples of UK-grown timber and reports that UK sawmills used 10 million green tonnes of softwood and 1 million green tonnes of hardwood in the annual harvest context stated on its page (FSC UK). The same source reports that 82% of sawmills’ roundwood consumption was certified in 2024. These are UK figures, not a global benchmark and not proof that any particular local board is the best choice.
Lesser-known species can spread demand beyond heavily sought-after tropical hardwoods. FSC points buyers toward such species, but the substitution still needs a check of strength, movement, durability, appearance, supply and code acceptance (FSC International construction guidance).

Reclaimed timber
Reclaimed wood can retain material value and extend the useful life of an existing product. Before specifying it, establish its previous use, source, dimensions, moisture and damage, embedded metal, coatings, preservatives, pests and any contamination. Confirm whether it can be graded or tested for the proposed structural role. A reclaimed board that is excellent for a non-load-bearing finish is not automatically suitable for a joist, rafter or stair component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDesign the installation so future owners can remove and reuse it: use accessible mechanical fixings where practical, avoid unnecessary composite bonding and keep a record of species, dimensions and treatments.
Evaluate carbon over the whole life
Wood stores biogenic carbon absorbed during tree growth and may keep that carbon in use. PEFC UK cautions, however: “This does not mean that every timber product or building automatically has a lower carbon footprint” (PEFC UK). Forest management, kiln and panel manufacturing, transport, material efficiency, building design, service life, maintenance and end-of-life treatment all affect the result.
Use comparable product or project data
Request an environmental product declaration or other appropriate environmental data for the actual product. Check the declared unit, life-cycle modules, system boundary, assumed service life, allocation method, recycled or recovered content and end-of-life scenario. Do not compare one product’s factory-gate number with another product’s whole-life result, or compare a lightweight efficient design with a heavier design that uses more material simply because both are labelled timber.
Account for durability and maintenance
A timber element that lasts 60 years with modest maintenance can outperform one that needs frequent replacement, even if the latter has a lower manufacturing figure. Include coatings, preservatives, replacement boards, access equipment and disposal in the project assessment. Keep water out through roof overhangs, drainage, ventilation, capillary breaks and correctly detailed joints; durability is often determined by design before it is determined by species.

Plan for reuse and end of life
FSC Malaysia describes reuse as a way to keep carbon stored for a building’s service life and potentially longer when wood is reclaimed and reused (FSC Malaysia). Treat this as a potential benefit tied to continued use, not as proof that every wood building is carbon-negative. Record dimensions, fixings and treatments so future recovery is practical, and distinguish clean untreated wood from painted, glued or preservative-treated material when planning disposal.

1. Create a timber schedule
List every timber package separately: framing, roof members, floor structure, cladding, windows, doors, flooring and joinery. For each, record quantity, dimensions, grade, exposure, treatment, finish, required date, acceptable alternatives and the professional responsible for approval.
2. Issue a clear supplier request
Ask each bidder to state species or product, country or region of origin where available, certification scheme and exact claim, certificate code, product scope, moisture and grade information, treatment, lead time, price basis and environmental data. Require proposed substitutions to be approved in writing rather than made at delivery.
3. Validate the claim before ordering
Look up the certificate, check its expiry and scope, and ensure the supplier’s legal entity matches the document. If the supplier is not certified, ask what credible evidence supports the forest source and whether the material is sold under a certified claim at all. Keep a copy of the record you checked; certificates and product availability can change.

5. Protect the timber on site
Store it off the ground, covered but ventilated, and protected from driving rain. Follow the manufacturer’s moisture, acclimatisation and treatment instructions. Poor storage can cause movement, fungal damage or waste that erases the benefit of a well-chosen source.
6. Close out with a material record
Keep invoices, certificates, product data, treatment records, as-built locations and maintenance instructions in the handover file. This supports future repair, certification audits and reuse.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
- Choosing by logo alone: obtain the claim, code, scope and line-item paperwork.
- Assuming certified means low-carbon: compare whole-life data with consistent boundaries.
- Calling a species sustainable everywhere: assess local availability, use, exposure and technical data.
- Using “local” as the only environmental test: verify forest origin, processing, efficiency and durability as well as transport.
- Specifying reclaimed wood without testing: document former use and treatment, then obtain grading or engineering approval.
- Accepting substitutions at delivery: require a written technical and environmental review before installation.
- Ignoring maintenance: detail water management and budget inspections, coatings and replaceable parts.
- Mixing certification records: collect documents from every contractor and subcontractor inside the defined project boundary.
A concise buyer checklist
- Have the structural or finish role and exposure been defined?
- Has a qualified professional confirmed grade, treatment, fire and code requirements?
- Is the species or product named, with acceptable alternatives listed?
- Does the supplier provide a current FSC or PEFC certificate, exact claim, code and matching scope where certification is specified?
- Will the claim appear on the invoice or delivery record by line item?
- For reclaimed wood, are previous use, contamination, dimensions, treatment and suitability documented?
- Are local availability and lead time confirmed without assuming that local equals sustainable?
- Are product-level carbon boundaries, service life, maintenance and end-of-life routes comparable?
- Does the design allow inspection, repair, removal and future reuse?
Frequently Asked Questions
Is FSC or PEFC automatically the greener choice?
Neither scheme is a universal carbon ranking. Certification provides audited forest-management and chain-of-custody evidence; compare the specific product claim and whole-life environmental data for the project.
Can I use reclaimed timber for structural work?
Possibly, but only after its former use, condition, dimensions, treatment history and structural capacity have been assessed and approved for the intended application.
Does buying local timber guarantee sustainability?
No. Local supply may reduce lead time and some transport emissions, but forest origin, certification or other credible evidence, processing efficiency, durability and maintenance still matter.
What should appear on a timber invoice?
Where a certified claim is specified, request the supplier’s certificate code and the certified product claim identified against each relevant line item, then retain the invoice with the project records.
