Choose a product whose EPA-registered label covers the intended use, surface, and claim, then follow its exact dilution, application, wet contact time, and rinse directions. EPA records include sodium hypochlorite products in several formats and with differing claims, but do not establish a standardized ranking of brands.
Start with the label, not the concentration
For a U.S. facility, confirm that the specific product label authorizes the intended use site, surface, and disinfection claim. The EPA advises that products be used according to their directions, which can specify application distance and dilution. See the EPA’s Selected EPA-Registered Disinfectants guidance and check the product’s current registration record and label.
Active ingredient and concentration are useful identification details, not proof that a bleach is suitable for a particular task. For example, an EPA registration record covers a product containing 7.5% sodium hypochlorite; that concentration alone does not establish its approved uses or make it the right choice for a given surface. Review the record for Sodium Hypochlorite 7.5% (55852-6) alongside the actual label.
Compare products on the factors that affect the job
| What to check | How to use it in the decision |
|---|---|
| EPA registration and use site | Verify the current registration and confirm that the label covers the setting, surface, and intended claim. |
| Active ingredient and concentration | Confirm the ingredient and labeled concentration on the package and registration record. Do not treat concentration as a stand-alone measure of suitability. |
| Format | EPA records include dilutable liquids, ready-to-use liquids, and wipes. Choose a format only after checking that its label covers the intended use. |
| Dilution and application | Follow the exact mixing and application directions for that product. Do not carry a dilution recipe from one bleach product to another. |
| Contact time | Keep the treated surface visibly wet for the full label-listed time for the intended claim. |
| Rinse directions | Check for post-use instructions specific to the surface and application, including any potable-water rinse requirement. |
| Workflow | Once label compatibility is established, consider whether concentrate, ready-to-use liquid, or wipes suit the operation. The cited EPA records do not compare prices, availability, or labor savings. |
The EPA’s sodium hypochlorite registration records and List N Advanced Search illustrate that products and claims vary. List entries can change, so verify the current product record and label rather than relying on a category name or an old listing.

Use dilution and contact time exactly as labeled
Do not apply a generic bleach dilution to a registered disinfectant unless that product’s label directs it. Use the specified water, dilution, and application method. EPA explains that contact time is the period the surface must remain visibly wet: if a label gives a 10-minute contact time for a particular pathogen, the surface must stay visibly wet for at least those 10 minutes after application.
EPA’s Pesticide Labeling Questions & Answers says the agency reviews contact times product by product and, in general, does not accept a hard-surface disinfectant contact time greater than 10 minutes unless the material is immersed in the solution as part of disinfection. This regulatory guidance is not a substitute for the contact time on the selected product’s label.

Check whether the surface must be rinsed
Some directions depend on the surface and use. One EPA label example for Micro-Kill Bleach Germicidal Bleach Solution calls for a potable-water rinse on food-contact surfaces. That example is not a universal instruction for all commercial bleach products; consult the current label for the product and application in use. The EPA record identifies Micro-Kill Bleach Germicidal Bleach Solution as EPA Reg. No. 37549-2 and the cited label as dated 2016-09-13.

- Define the task. Identify the surface, setting, and disinfection claim required.
- Check authorization. Find a current EPA-registered product whose label includes that use and surface.
- Choose the workable format. Compare dilutable liquid, ready-to-use liquid, or wipes only among products labeled for the job.
- Plan the application. Follow the product’s dilution, application, and full wet-contact-time instructions.
- Verify closeout directions. Check whether the label requires rinsing or other steps after treatment.
Because the cited evidence does not provide controlled, comparable testing across brands, it cannot support a universal “best” product claim. Compare products only for the same intended use and let the current label determine whether a candidate is appropriate.
