alkali-activated binders

How to Choose Cement-Free Construction Materials for a Building Project

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a cement-free material by the job it must perform, not by the label on the bag or product page. Define the assembly’s structural, thermal, moisture, fire and service-life requirements; confirm the code and approval route in your jurisdiction; then compare only alternatives that satisfy the same function. Request current, product-specific environmental product declarations (EPDs), align their declared units and life-cycle boundaries, and evaluate life-cycle cost over one common study period. Alkali-activated stabilized earth and lime-based materials can be candidates for particular applications, but neither family is automatically suitable, cement-free, lower-carbon or code-approved for every project.

What “cement-free” means in a specification

“Cement-free” is a project constraint, not a performance specification. It tells a design team to avoid a defined cement constituent, but it does not state how a wall, floor, foundation, plaster or block must carry loads, control heat, resist water, withstand fire or remain serviceable. Two products can both be marketed as cement-free while serving entirely different functions and having very different evidence behind them.

Write the requirement in assembly terms before looking at products. A useful brief identifies the element (for example, a load-bearing wall, non-load-bearing infill, floor topping or internal finish), its required performance, the exposure it will see, the intended service life, the applicable regulations and the evidence needed for approval. The same binder may be reasonable in one controlled interior application and unsuitable in a wet, freeze-exposed or structural assembly.

Also define what “cement-free” excludes. Some lime or hydraulic products are distinct from Portland-cement products, but the term does not guarantee that every formulation contains no cement or that it can replace structural concrete. Ask the manufacturer for the complete formulation and the exact product designation, rather than inferring composition from a family name.

Start with the building function and required performance

Material selection becomes manageable when the design team first states the function that every candidate must meet. Record the requirements in the project specification so a lower-impact claim cannot silently replace a safety or durability requirement.

Structural role

State whether the material is load-bearing, part of a load path, a stabilised fill, a partition or a finish. For a structural application, require engineering calculations and test evidence for the actual product and configuration. A study of an alkali-activated binder in stabilised compressed-earth products demonstrates a research pathway; it does not establish universal structural performance for every alkali-activated product.

Thermal and moisture role

Define the thermal, vapour and water-management functions of the complete assembly rather than relying on a binder description. The 2020 peer-reviewed work on alkali activation and waste materials in stabilised earth included mechanical and thermal testing, but project teams still need evidence for the proposed product, thickness, climate and detailing. Check how the assembly handles rain, ground moisture, interior humidity and drying in the intended exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fire and health requirements

Identify fire-resistance or reaction-to-fire requirements and any restrictions on constituents, emissions or occupant exposure that apply to the building. Test reports must correspond to the product and build-up being specified; a generic material-family statement is not a substitute for an approval route.

Service life and maintenance

Set the intended service life and the maintenance, repair and replacement assumptions that support it. A material that has a low initial impact but requires frequent replacement may not perform better over the building life cycle. Record access, inspection and repair constraints alongside the material choice.

Candidate families that may fit a cement-free brief

The following families are starting points for investigation, not universal recommendations. Their suitability depends on the element, exposure, formulation, installation method and jurisdiction.

Material family Evidence identified What that evidence supports Checks still required for a project
Alkali-activated binders (also called geopolymers in some literature) A 2020 peer-reviewed study examined alkali activation and waste materials in stabilised compressed-earth products, including mechanical and thermal testing and a comparative life-cycle assessment. There is a documented research route for stabilised-earth products and a method for assessing both performance and life-cycle effects. Product-specific formulation, structural and durability evidence, exposure suitability, code acceptance, installation controls, local supply and EPD data.
Lime and other hydraulic binders These are distinct material families that can be considered for particular construction functions. They may be investigated where the specified function and evidence match the project. Whether the exact product is cement-free, its intended function, performance testing, durability, fire and moisture suitability, approval route and compatibility with adjacent materials.
Stabilised compressed-earth products The 2020 study provides an example of mechanical, thermal and comparative life-cycle evaluation for an alkali-activated approach. Earth-based assemblies can be assessed through a defined performance and life-cycle methodology. Site and climate exposure, dimensional and moisture behaviour, load requirements, workmanship, quality control, local code pathway and current product documentation.

Do not treat “lime,” “hydraulic,” “natural” or “geopolymer” as proof of a lower environmental impact. The evidence has to match the product, declared formulation, manufacturing route and intended use.

Build a project-specific evidence brief

Before requesting quotations, issue a short evidence brief to every candidate supplier. This prevents incomparable brochures from driving the decision.

  • Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas
  • One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
  1. Describe the assembly. Identify the location in the building, dimensions or thickness range, interfaces, finish and installation sequence.
  2. List required performance. Include structural, thermal, moisture, fire, health and service-life requirements that apply to that element.
  3. State exposure conditions. Describe climate, rain, ground contact, interior humidity, freeze or thaw exposure where relevant, and any chemicals or salts the material may encounter.
  4. Specify the approval route. Name the governing code, standard, alternative-method process or engineer-of-record review that will be used in the project jurisdiction.
  5. Request product evidence. Ask for current test reports, installation instructions, quality-control requirements, limitations and references to the exact product and configuration.
  6. Request environmental data. Obtain a current product-specific EPD and record its declared unit, life-cycle stages, impact indicators, validity and conditions for comparison.
  7. Request commercial and supply data. Confirm lead time, minimum order, delivery distance, storage, installer competence, specialist equipment and replacement availability.

Reject a candidate when the supplier cannot identify the exact formulation, intended application or evidence needed for the proposed assembly. A generic family description is not enough to support a specification.

Confirm code acceptance before design commitment

Approval is jurisdiction-specific. A material can be technically promising and still lack a straightforward compliance path in the place where the building will be constructed. Ask the building-control authority, structural engineer and design team what route applies before the material appears in tender documents.

  • Determine whether the product is covered directly by the adopted building code or a referenced material standard.
  • If it is not directly covered, identify the alternative-material, performance-based or engineer-reviewed route available locally.
  • Match test reports to the exact formulation, density, curing method, dimensions and assembly proposed.
  • Confirm who is responsible for calculations, site testing, inspection and acceptance records.
  • Document any restrictions on use, such as non-structural applications, protected locations or specified environmental exposures.

Do not assume that evidence from one country, edition or building type transfers automatically to another jurisdiction. The approval decision belongs to the authority and project professionals responsible for the building.

Compare environmental claims with EPDs, not slogans

An EPD is a reporting tool, not a blanket sustainability ranking. ISO 21930:2017 sets core requirements for construction-product EPDs, including life-cycle inventory and impact-assessment information, life-cycle stages and conditions for comparison. ISO reports that this edition was reviewed and confirmed in 2023 and remains current.

Check the declared unit and functional equivalence

Record the declared or functional unit exactly as stated. A result per kilogram, cubic metre, square metre of wall or complete assembly cannot be compared directly without converting to a common functional basis that delivers the same performance. For a wall comparison, include the quantity needed to achieve the required structural, thermal, moisture and fire functions.

Align life-cycle boundaries

Compare the same life-cycle stages. Manufacturing-only information cannot be treated as equivalent to a declaration that also includes transport, installation, use, replacement and end-of-life stages. Note the boundary, reference service life, scenarios and cut-off rules for every EPD.

Read the impact indicators and assumptions

Capture the impact indicators reported, the data period, geographic assumptions, energy mix, transport scenarios and replacement assumptions. An EPD does not prove that one product is better in every impact category. It shows results calculated under the declaration’s rules and scenarios.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use current, product-specific documents

Ask for the current declaration for the exact product and manufacturing route. A family-level document or an old declaration may not represent a changed formulation, plant, fuel mix or packaging system. Keep the EPD with the specification and record its validity period.

Use life-cycle cost on the same basis

Initial price alone can mislead when products have different installation methods, maintenance needs or replacement intervals. ASTM E917-17(2023) describes life-cycle costing as evaluating building or system alternatives over a designated period, including potential future operating, maintenance, repair and replacement costs.

Set one study period for all alternatives and discount or escalate costs according to the project’s agreed economic assumptions. Include the costs that differ between options:

  • material, delivery, storage and specialist equipment;
  • design, testing, approvals and site quality control;
  • installation labour and sequencing effects;
  • operation-related costs where the assembly changes building performance;
  • planned maintenance, inspection and repair;
  • replacement, removal and disposal during the study period; and
  • availability and logistics risks that could affect future repair.

Compare only alternatives that meet the same functional requirements. A cheaper finish is not an equivalent substitute for a load-bearing wall, and a lower-impact binder is not an equivalent substitute if the complete assembly needs a different thickness, reinforcement or protective layer.

Keep the assessment at building level

Product-stage carbon is only one part of a building decision. The European Commission’s Level(s) framework tracks carbon, materials, water, health, comfort and climate impacts across the building life cycle. Use that broader structure to test whether a material choice improves the building as a whole rather than one product-stage indicator.

For each candidate assembly, document effects on:

  • whole-life carbon and other material impacts;
  • water use and moisture management;
  • indoor health and comfort;
  • operational energy implications where the assembly changes thermal performance; and
  • climate resilience and service-life assumptions.

This step can reveal trade-offs that a single EPD number cannot show. For example, a material with favourable manufacturing results may require additional layers, protection, transport or replacement that alter the building-level outcome.

Integrate environmental data into the digital model

When the project uses building information modelling (BIM), structure the environmental information so quantities and specifications remain connected. ISO 22057:2022 addresses structuring EPD information for use in BIM and supports data integration into life-cycle assessment workflows.

At minimum, link each modelled element to the exact product or generic scenario used in the assessment, its declared unit, life-cycle stages, reference service life and EPD identifier. Record assumptions separately from verified product data. This makes later design changes traceable and prevents a generic material name from being mistaken for a completed environmental calculation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Evaluate supply, installation and workmanship risk

A material that meets paper requirements can still fail as a project choice if it cannot be delivered, installed or repaired reliably. Compare the practical conditions alongside technical and environmental evidence.

A step-by-step selection workflow

  1. Define the no-cement boundary. State whether the restriction applies to the binder, the whole product, the complete assembly or only a specific project credit. Require disclosure of all constituents.
  2. Write the performance schedule. Record structural, thermal, moisture, fire, health, durability and service-life requirements for the element.
  3. Map the jurisdictional route. Confirm code coverage, alternative approval procedures, responsible professionals and required tests.
  4. Screen candidate families. Consider alkali-activated stabilised earth, lime or other hydraulic-binder solutions only where their function matches the assembly.
  5. Collect evidence. Obtain product-specific test reports, installation controls, limitations, current EPDs and supply information.
  6. Normalize environmental data. Align functional units, quantities, life-cycle stages, reference service lives and impact indicators.
  7. Model life-cycle cost. Use one study period and include initial, operating, maintenance, repair and replacement costs.
  8. Assess the building-level outcome. Review carbon, materials, water, health, comfort and climate effects using a whole-life framework such as Level(s).
  9. Check constructability. Verify suppliers, installers, storage, sequencing, interfaces, inspection and repair provisions.
  10. Document the decision. Keep the requirements, evidence, assumptions, calculations, approval correspondence and selected product designation together.
  11. Specify and verify on site. Put the exact product, preparation, curing, testing and acceptance criteria in the contract, then record compliance during construction.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Choosing by the label alone

Problem: “Cement-free” is treated as proof of suitability or environmental superiority.

Correction: Start with the assembly’s function and require evidence for the exact product and exposure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming all lime products are cement-free

Problem: A lime or hydraulic label is taken as a complete formulation disclosure.

Correction: Request the declared composition and verify whether the exact product meets the project’s no-cement definition.

Using a research result as a product approval

Problem: Findings from the 2020 stabilised-earth study are generalized to every alkali-activated material or building type.

Correction: Treat the study as evidence of a research pathway, then obtain product- and jurisdiction-specific structural, durability and approval evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparing unmatched EPDs

Problem: One product is compared per kilogram at manufacturing stage while another is compared per square metre of finished wall over a different life cycle.

Correction: Apply a common life-cycle-cost period and include future costs described by ASTM E917-17(2023).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring local delivery and skills

Problem: A technically suitable material is selected without a reliable supplier or trained installer.

Correction: Confirm availability, lead time, equipment, workmanship controls and repair capacity before specification.

What a defensible specification should contain

A procurement-ready specification should identify more than a material family. Include:

  • the exact product name, formulation or approved equivalent process;
  • the building element and required performance;
  • exposure limits and protection details;
  • required tests, standards, sampling and acceptance criteria;
  • mixing, placement, compaction, curing, drying and storage instructions;
  • permitted substitutions and the evidence required before approval;
  • the current EPD, declared unit, life-cycle boundary and reference service life used in assessment;
  • life-cycle-cost assumptions and the common study period; and
  • responsibilities for design approval, site inspection, records and defects correction.

If the project cannot yet state these items, it is still at the investigation stage rather than ready for an unconditional cement-free product selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final decision test

Select the candidate only when all five questions have documented answers:

  1. Does the complete assembly meet the required function and performance?
  2. Is there an accepted code or approval route in the project jurisdiction?
  3. Do current, product-specific tests and EPD data support the exact product and use?
  4. Does the life-cycle-cost comparison use the same study period and equivalent functions?
  5. Can the project obtain, install, inspect, maintain and repair the material reliably?

A “no” answer is a reason to keep the option in evaluation, not to force it into the design. Cement-free construction can be a sound project requirement when it is translated into measurable assembly performance, verified evidence, whole-life comparisons and a realistic delivery plan.
