Choose a Milwaukee brushless tool when your work makes runtime, motor life, or performance under repeated demanding use a priority. A brushed tool may still be the better buy when it meets the job’s requirements and its price, battery arrangement, or other practical advantages make more sense. Compare exact models that do the same job: “brushless” alone does not establish that one tool is the right choice, and Milwaukee’s performance figures are manufacturer claims, not independent head-to-head results.

What the difference means when you are choosing a tool

“Brushless” identifies the motor type. In Milwaukee’s product descriptions, the stated buyer-facing advantages are efficiency, runtime, and motor life. Milwaukee says its brushless motors are optimized for efficiency and deliver more runtime and longer life than brushed motors. Treat that as Milwaukee’s claim about its products—not as a guarantee for every model, workload, battery, or job site.

For a purchase decision, the useful question is not whether brushless is universally better. It is whether the particular brushless model offers an advantage you will use often enough to justify its price and fit your work. If a tool runs for long stretches, sees repeated demanding use, or is costly to take out of service, the claimed efficiency and motor-life benefits may matter more. For occasional or lighter work, a brushed option that meets the task may be sufficient. The available product information does not establish a universal price premium, so compare current prices for the exact tools and configurations you are considering.

Also distinguish motor type from Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL name. Milwaukee describes FUEL as a system combining its POWERSTATE brushless motor, REDLITHIUM battery pack, and REDLINK PLUS intelligence. FUEL therefore describes more than a brushless motor by itself. Do not assume that every brushless M18 product is a FUEL tool, or infer that a FUEL label supplies a particular performance figure unless Milwaukee states that figure for the exact model. Milwaukee’s company history dates the introduction of M18 FUEL to 2012; that date explains the product line’s history, not how any particular tool compares today.

Compare the same kind of tool before comparing motor claims

A useful comparison starts with two tools designed for the same task and a similar level of work. A drill and a hammer drill are not automatically equivalent, and a drill’s torque figure cannot be used to rank a circular saw or another tool type. Compare the output specifications that matter for the job, then consider runtime, battery capacity, size, weight, battery compatibility, and total price.

Milwaukee example What Milwaukee lists or claims How to use the information
M18 FUEL 1/2-inch Drill Driver, 2803-20 POWERSTATE brushless motor; 1,200 in-lb peak torque; 0–550/0–2,000 RPM; compatible with all M18 batteries. Milwaukee advertises “Up To 60% More Power” than the competitive set for this model. Use the listed torque, speed ranges, and battery compatibility to assess this drill for your work. The “Up To 60%” statement is Milwaukee’s claim for this model against its stated competitive set, not a general brushed-versus-brushless result.
M18 1/2-inch Brushless Hammer Drill, 2902-20 725 in-lb maximum torque; compatible with M18 batteries. Milwaukee describes its brushless motor as optimized for efficiency, with more runtime and longer life than a brushed motor. Consider this model as a hammer drill for tasks where that tool type is appropriate. Its torque figure does not create a controlled comparison with the 2803-20 drill driver: they are different models and tool types.
M18 Brushless 7-1/4-inch Circular Saw, 2631-20 Milwaukee claims up to 40% more power and up to 30% more runtime than circular saws with brushed motors. Milwaukee also says its motor delivers over 30% more runtime and longer life than brushed motors. These are claims for this circular saw. They do not establish the same percentage advantage for Milwaukee drills or the entire M18 range.

The listed product specifications and claims are Milwaukee’s own. The product pages do not provide a matched brushed-and-brushless test under shared conditions, and the available information does not establish independent test results. Likewise, the examples above are useful for understanding what Milwaukee publishes, not for concluding that one of these tools outperforms another in a direct test.

Decide which specifications matter for your work

Output for the task

Start by identifying the material, task, and frequency of use. For a drill, review the manufacturer’s torque and speed information alongside the application you need to handle. For a saw, focus on the model’s specifications and suitability for the cutting work. A larger number is not automatically a better fit: figures from unlike tool types, or from different models used for different purposes, do not form a fair ranking.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Milwaukee lists 1,200 in-lb peak torque for the 2803-20 drill driver and 725 in-lb maximum torque for the 2902-20 hammer drill. Those figures should not be presented as a direct drill-versus-hammer-drill performance test. The models have different designations and functions, and the listed values alone do not explain how either will perform in a particular application.

Runtime and battery capacity

Runtime matters most when you work for extended periods between battery changes or need to reduce interruptions. Milwaukee’s brushless-runtime statements are model-specific claims; they do not tell you how long a tool will run on a particular battery in your conditions. When comparing candidates, check the battery capacity included in a kit, whether a battery is included at all, and whether the tool is compatible with batteries you already own.

Both cited drill models are listed as compatible with M18 batteries, and Milwaukee says the 2803-20 works with all M18 batteries. That can be valuable if you already have suitable M18 packs, but compatibility does not mean every purchase includes a battery or charger. Confirm the exact contents of the listing rather than assuming a tool-only product is a complete kit.

Size, weight, and handling

Consider how long you will hold the tool, how often you will move it, and whether its size works in the spaces where you operate. Compare the exact models’ published dimensions and weights, including the battery configuration if the listing specifies it. The product details summarized here do not provide comparable dimensions or weights for the examples, so they cannot establish which is lighter or easier to handle. Check the current exact-model specifications before deciding on that basis.

Battery ecosystem and kit value

If you already own batteries and chargers in the M18 system, a compatible tool may reduce the need to buy another battery setup. If you are starting without batteries, compare tool-only and kit listings separately, accounting for the batteries and charger required for your work. The relevant cost is the configuration you will actually use—not an isolated tool price that leaves out required equipment.

Make the comparison like-for-like: a tool-only price against another tool-only price, or a kit against a kit with equivalent essentials. Check the model number because one product family can appear in multiple purchase configurations. Confirm whether the listing includes a battery, charger, case, or other accessories you need, and whether those items are actually part of the selected offer rather than merely shown in a product image. If you already own compatible M18 batteries and a charger, a tool-only listing may be sufficient; if not, the apparent lower price may omit equipment needed to use the tool.

Price and ownership cost

The available Milwaukee product information does not establish how much more a comparable brushless tool costs than a brushed tool. Nor does it establish a universal saving from longer runtime or motor life. Check current prices, included accessories, battery and charger contents, availability, and any model-specific warranty terms directly for the exact listing you might buy. Do not infer a price premium or payback period from the motor label alone.

To decide whether a price difference is worthwhile, consider the cost of the whole setup and how often you will use it. A claimed runtime gain could be valuable if fewer battery changes would make a busy workday more efficient, but the published percentages do not calculate your time saved or guarantee a result with your chosen battery and task. Similarly, Milwaukee’s longer-motor-life statement is not a service-life estimate in years or hours. Treat both as factors in a practical trade-off, not as a guaranteed financial return.

A practical selection process

  1. Write down the job. Identify the tool type, material or task, how demanding the work is, and how frequently you expect to use the tool. This prevents a motor claim from distracting from basic suitability.
  2. Find comparable models. Compare a brushed and a brushless option only when both are intended for the same kind of work. Verify each model number and tool type; do not treat a drill and a hammer drill as matched alternatives simply because both are 1/2-inch models.
  3. Check task-relevant output. Review the specifications each manufacturer publishes for the exact models. Keep the units and context attached to each number, and do not compare specifications across unlike tools as if they were measured under a shared test.
  4. Assess interruption costs. If you work for long periods, ask whether the brushless model’s claimed runtime advantage would meaningfully reduce battery changes for your workload. Milwaukee’s stated percentages do not predict your actual runtime with a particular battery or application.
  5. Check batteries and kit contents. Confirm compatibility with batteries you own, and whether the listing includes the battery, charger, or other equipment you need. Compare like-for-like configurations.
  6. Compare handling and price. Review dimensions and weight for the exact configuration, then compare current tool-only or kit prices. If this information is absent from a listing, verify it before relying on it.
  7. Make the trade-off explicit. Choose brushless when its claimed advantages address a real need in your work and the exact tool fits your budget and battery setup. Choose a brushed option when it meets the task and the brushless benefits do not justify the difference for your use.

How to interpret Milwaukee’s percentages

Percentages are easy to overgeneralize. Milwaukee’s M18 brushless 7-1/4-inch circular saw page says up to 40% more power and up to 30% more runtime than circular saws with brushed motors. Those are claims for that saw and its stated comparison, not a promise that every Milwaukee brushless tool is 40% more powerful or runs 30% longer than its brushed equivalent.

Milwaukee also says the 2803-20 M18 FUEL drill driver offers “Up To 60% More Power” than the competitive set. That comparison is not described as a brushed-versus-brushless test. Keep the claim attached to the 2803-20 and Milwaukee’s stated comparison scope; it cannot be used to infer a 60% advantage over a particular Milwaukee brushed tool.

The product-page statements do not give a general independent test protocol or establish how the claims translate to every battery, material, or workload. The careful reading is the narrow one: Milwaukee advertises these benefits for identified products, while a buyer should evaluate the exact tool for the actual job.

There are two different comparison questions here. “Does this named brushless tool have an advertised advantage over a brushed comparison?” is the scope of the circular saw’s claims. “How does this drill compare with the competitive set?” is the scope of the 2803-20’s power statement. Neither answers the other question, and neither proves that every brushless product offers the same gain.

Common buying mistakes to avoid

  • Treating brushless as a complete performance rating. Motor type does not replace task fit, output specifications, battery needs, handling, or price.
  • Applying a model-specific claim to the whole line. The circular saw’s percentages are not general M18 brushless guarantees, and the drill driver’s competitive-set claim is not a brushed-tool comparison.
  • Comparing unlike models by one number. The 2803-20 and 2902-20 have different tool designations. Their torque figures do not constitute a controlled comparison.
  • Assuming a kit includes everything. Tool-only and kit versions can differ. Check exactly which batteries, charger, and accessories are included.
  • Assuming FUEL is another word for brushless. Milwaukee describes FUEL as a combination of motor, battery, and electronic technologies, not merely a motor label.
  • Assuming higher upfront cost automatically pays back. No comparable current prices or independent life-cycle results are established here. Base a decision on the current price and the value you expect from the exact tool.
  • Reading a percentage as a guaranteed job-site result. The saw’s “up to” claims are not a promised improvement for every cut, battery, or user. Actual runtime and output depend on the tool and work conditions; the product pages do not quantify a universal outcome.

When each type is the more sensible choice

Favor a brushless model when

  • You use the tool repeatedly or for extended stretches, so Milwaukee’s stated runtime advantage is relevant to your workflow.
  • You place a high value on the longer motor life Milwaukee claims for its brushless motors, while recognizing that the available material does not quantify service life under your conditions.
  • The exact brushless model has specifications and handling that suit the task, and it fits the battery system and budget you intend to use.

A brushed model can still make sense when

  • It meets the requirements of the job and you do not expect to benefit enough from the claimed runtime or motor-life advantages to justify choosing a different model.
  • The specific brushed option is more practical for your budget or purchase configuration after comparing current, like-for-like listings.
  • You have a straightforward or occasional-use need and the exact model’s capability, battery arrangement, and price fit that need.

These are decision conditions, not claims that every brushless model costs more or that every brushed model is adequate for light work. The exact product specifications and current configuration determine whether an option fits.

What is established—and what is not

Milwaukee identifies brushless efficiency, runtime, and motor life as advantages, and publishes quantified claims for specific products. It also describes M18 FUEL as a three-technology system. The figures available for the named drill and circular saw are attributable to Milwaukee and apply only within their stated scopes.

The available product information does not establish a general Milwaukee brushed-versus-brushless price difference, an independent head-to-head result, or a universal percentage improvement across the tool line. It also does not provide a matched brushed counterpart for the named Milwaukee examples. A sound purchase decision therefore rests on the exact model’s task fit, published specifications, battery compatibility, configuration, and current price—not on an assumed line-wide result.

Choose by exact model and workload, not by the brushless label alone. Milwaukee positions brushless motors as offering efficiency, runtime, and longer motor life, but quantified advantages apply to particular products and remain manufacturer claims. Compare tools built for the same job, verify battery and kit contents, and check current like-for-like prices. Brushless is most compelling when those claimed benefits solve a real need; a brushed tool remains a reasonable choice when it meets the job and makes more practical sense for your budget and setup.
