Place each leak detector on the floor where water from its most likely source would reach it first: beside the washing machine, under the kitchen and bathroom sinks, next to the water heater, at the base of the toilet, and in the basement near any sump equipment. Then decide how the alert should reach you. A standard detector tells you that water touched its sensing points. Stopping the water is a separate job, handled by a whole-home shutoff device with its own installation and pairing requirements.

What a leak detector can and cannot do

Most consumer leak detectors are contact sensors. Their sensing points or probe must be touched by water before they react. A sensor on a dry shelf, or a few feet away from a leak, detects nothing. Manufacturer guidance from Moen, Cove, and SimpliSafe all makes the same basic point: the sensor helps only when water actually reaches its contacts.

  • It detects water at its sensing points. It does not find a leak inside a wall or under a slab unless an extension cable or probe reaches that spot.
  • It sends an alert through a base station, a Wi-Fi app connection, or a connected alarm system, depending on the model.
  • Most point sensors do not close a valve. The paired shutoff systems described later are the exception, and they work differently.

Where to place sensors

Start at floor level, near the equipment and fixtures most likely to leak, and then work outward. Follow the instructions for your exact model, because some manuals restrict mounting positions and the sensing location can differ from one product to another.

Under kitchen and bathroom sinks

Place the sensor on the cabinet floor where a supply-line or drain leak would run downhill. Moen’s placement guidance and SimpliSafe’s sensor installation guidance both list this location. Pick the lowest open spot. A cabinet base, toe-kick, or pipe bracket can block runoff from reaching the contacts, so check that the water path is clear. That barrier point is a practical inference from how contact sensors work, not a rule quoted from a manufacturer.

  • Real IP66 Waterproof: The Water Alarm Detector is made of ABS & Stainless Steel, helps water sensor keep sensibility during the long time used without rust. Mounting Battery from the front to protect battery from getting wet and safer.

Beside toilets

Moen and Cove both list locations at or behind the toilet. Position the sensor where an overflow or a supply-line leak would flow to the floor and make contact. A spot that water would have to run uphill or around a cabinet to reach is a poor choice.

Near the water heater

SimpliSafe describes placing a sensor in the drip pan under the water heater, and Moen lists water heaters as a common location. Use the drip pan only if your sensor’s instructions allow it. If the manual cautions against metal surfaces, or warns about condensation, mount the sensor on the floor beside the tank instead.

Beside or behind the washing machine

Place the sensor on the floor where a hose or drain leak would collect. Both SimpliSafe and Moen list laundry locations. Washers are a sensible priority because hoses often fail out of sight, behind the machine, where nobody looks until the floor is wet.

Refrigerator water line, dishwasher, and other water-connected equipment

Consider a sensor near a refrigerator’s water line, a dishwasher, a water filter, a boiler, or a water softener, where the manufacturer permits. Moen lists filtration equipment, boilers, water softeners, and appliances as locations. GE Appliances gives laundry and plumbing examples for its SmartHQ sensor. None of the cited manufacturers ranks these appliances by how often they leak, so treat them as sensible additions rather than proven priorities.

GE Appliances describes its SmartHQ sensor on its support page as “a sensor that can be placed in indoor locations where a potential water leak may occur.”

Basements, floor drains, and sump pumps

Moen lists basements, foundation leaks, floor drains, and sump pumps as locations. SimpliSafe also names basements and sump pumps. Place sensors where water would collect first, such as the low point of the floor near the sump pit or drain. Keep the sensor inside the operating environment its manual specifies. Basements can be damp, cold, or prone to condensation, and some manuals set limits for those conditions.

If you can only buy a few sensors

When budget covers only a handful of units, put them where a leak would spread unnoticed for the longest time. In practice that usually means the laundry area, the water heater, and the lowest bathroom or kitchen cabinet. This is a judgment about exposure, not a figure drawn from leak statistics.

Extending coverage with a cable or remote disc

Moen’s installation guidance contains a detail that changes how you should place its detector. When the mounting base and an accessory are attached, the sensors on the back of the detector become inactive. In that configuration, a remote sensing disc or cable must be installed for detection to work. Moen’s app guidance says the cable is sensitive along its length, and the disc is intended for hard-to-reach places.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm that the accessory is compatible with your exact detector model before you buy it.
  2. Decide whether the disc or the cable fits the spot. Use the disc for a tight, hard-to-reach point. Use the cable where water could travel along a run of floor, such as under a line of cabinets.
  3. Lay the cable along the path water would take to the lowest point, not across a dry section of floor.
  4. Check the manual to confirm whether the detector’s built-in contacts are disabled. If they are, the accessory is the only sensing path.

Choosing a detector

The products below are examples drawn from manufacturer documentation. They are not tested or ranked recommendations, and specifications change, so confirm them against the current manual before buying. “Not stated” means the manufacturer material reviewed for this guide does not give that detail.

Two details in this comparison need care. Cove’s June 2024 Gen 2 manual lists a temperature alert below 41°F, while Cove’s current installation page describes a trigger below 45°F. The difference may reflect model or version variation, or a change in the support content, so check the manual for your unit rather than assuming either number applies to every Cove device. Battery type is also model-specific: Cove’s Gen 2 uses a CR2450 battery, but no comparable battery-life figure is given for the other products.

When you compare models, answer these questions in order:

  1. Where does the most likely leak point sit, and can a floor sensor physically reach it?
  2. Does the model need a hub, base station, or Wi-Fi network, and is that equipment already in place?
  3. Will you be notified by phone, by an alarm system, or only by a local sound, and does the model support that arrangement?
  4. Do you need a freeze or temperature alert, and does the model’s stated threshold match your climate and the location?
  5. Do you want the water stopped automatically, or only alerted? If the answer is automatic, go to the next section.

Alerts versus automatic shutoff

A point sensor tells you, or a linked system, that water reached it. It does not stop the flow. A whole-home flow-based device works differently. Chubb describes it as installed in-line on the main pipe, which means a plumber must cut into the supply line. A paired system can then close the shutoff valve, but the response depends on how the product and valve were set up.

Moen describes the same kind of linkage: its detector can close a shutoff valve when paired with the Flo Shutoff. If you go this route, confirm three things before purchase: the valve type and its compatibility, whether the system needs a professional installer, and what it does during a power or network outage. Those details are specific to each product and setup, and the manufacturer documentation should describe them.

Setup, testing, and upkeep

  1. Read the sensor’s mounting and setup instructions before you drill, stick, or place anything. Accessories can change how the sensor works.
  2. Pair the sensor with its required equipment. For GE’s SmartHQ detector, that means connecting through the SmartHQ app over Wi-Fi. For SimpliSafe, it means pairing with the Base Station.
  3. Turn on notifications and confirm that alerts reach the phone or alarm system you rely on. Check that the sound, app message, or alarm works as intended.
  4. Test the sensor with the method in its manual. Do not assume it works because the status light is on.
  5. Name each sensor by location in the app if the platform allows it, so an alert identifies the room and not just a device number.
  6. Write down who responds to an alert, and locate the main water shutoff valve for the home so responders know where to go.
  7. Check the battery type and replacement schedule for your model. Cove’s Gen 2 uses a CR2450 battery, and battery requirements differ across products.

Check each product’s manual for what happens during network or power loss. Some alerts depend on Wi-Fi or a base station, and that dependency should be part of your decision.

What the evidence does not support

The manufacturer material behind this guide does not establish a reduction in water damage, a claim-cost figure, a leak-frequency ranking for appliances, or an insurance premium discount. The sources describe earlier warning as the intended function of a sensor. Whether a detector prevents damage in practice depends on where it is placed, whether the alert is delivered, and how quickly someone responds. If you want an insurance discount, ask your insurer directly whether it recognizes a particular device and what documentation it requires.

This guide relies on manufacturer support pages and product manuals, not on independent laboratory testing, and it does not include current retail prices.

A leak sensor is most useful when it sits where water will actually reach it, sends an alert to someone who can act, and is maintained like any other safety device in the house.
