The most energy-efficient way to heat a home depends on its climate, insulation, existing ducts or radiators, local energy prices, and the cost of installation. For many U.S. homes, a properly sized heat pump is worth comparing first: it moves heat rather than generating it directly, can provide both heating and cooling, and comes in ducted and ductless configurations. But it is not automatically the cheapest option for every home. Use the guide below to compare systems against your house and local conditions.
What makes a home heating system efficient?
Efficiency describes how well equipment turns energy into useful heat; it does not, by itself, tell you which system will cost least to buy or run. The answer also depends on your local electricity and fuel rates, outdoor temperatures, the home’s heat loss, equipment sizing, and installation quality. A system with a strong efficiency rating can underperform if it is poorly matched to the house or installed incorrectly.
Start with the building as well as the heater. Air sealing and insulation can reduce heat loss, while a thermostat schedule can limit unnecessary operation. The U.S. Department of Energy’s home-heating overview and consumer guide discuss ways to improve heating efficiency.
Compare the main types of home heating
| System | How it works | Often worth considering when | Key points to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air-source heat pump | Moves heat from outdoors into the home in heating mode; can also provide cooling. | You want heating and cooling, have suitable ducts, or need a ductless option for zones or a home without ducts. | Cold-weather performance, climate-appropriate rating, distribution needs, sizing, installation, and local electricity costs. |
| Furnace | Burns fuel such as natural gas, oil, or propane to produce heat. | The home already has compatible ductwork and fuel service, or a furnace fits the home’s heating and cost requirements. | AFUE, regional ENERGY STAR criteria, equipment sizing, duct design and sealing, and installation quality. |
| Boiler | Heats water and distributes heat, commonly through radiators or similar systems. | The home already uses hydronic heat or a boiler fits the distribution system. | Compatibility with existing distribution, fuel and installation costs, and qualified service. The DOE overview does not establish a universal cost or efficiency comparison. |
| Wood or pellet heater | Burns wood or pellets for heat. | The home and local conditions make this type of heating appropriate. | Equipment, fuel supply, installation, maintenance, and safe venting. Suitability and comparative costs vary. |
| Active solar heating | Uses solar energy collected by equipment to provide heat. | The home’s design and site make an active solar system practical. | Site and system requirements, installation, and how it will work alongside other heat. The DOE overview does not establish universal costs or suitability. |
These options are identified by the Department of Energy in its overview of home heating. The available guidance does not establish a single lifecycle-cost winner across them.

When a heat pump is a strong candidate
An air-source heat pump transfers heat rather than creating it by burning fuel or using electric resistance. The Department of Energy describes heat pumps as an option for all climates and notes that newer air-source models can serve colder areas. If your winters regularly fall below freezing, DOE advises considering an ENERGY STAR-certified cold-climate model.
Ducted and ductless systems
A ducted system can use existing ducts, but their condition and design matter: leaks or poor distribution can reduce comfort and performance. Ductless systems, including minisplits, can heat specific zones or homes without existing ductwork. The right configuration depends on the building and how many areas need heat.

What the savings figure does—and does not—mean
DOE says air-source heat pumps can reduce electricity use for heating by up to 75% compared with electric-resistance heating. That is an upper comparison against electric resistance, not a promise of a household bill reduction or a comparison with gas, oil, or every existing system. Your bill depends on local rates, the home’s heat loss, system selection, and operation. See DOE’s heat pump systems guidance and its air-source heat-pump purchasing guidance, updated in December 2024.
When a furnace may fit better
Furnaces burn fuel such as natural gas, oil, or propane. Their efficiency is commonly expressed as AFUE, the proportion of fuel energy delivered as useful heat. ENERGY STAR furnace criteria differ between northern and southern U.S. markets, so check the criteria that apply to your region rather than assuming one label requirement applies nationwide.

DOE notes that condensing furnaces with sealed combustion recover heat from flue gases and do not use indoor air for combustion. A high AFUE rating alone cannot guarantee good results: sizing, duct design, duct sealing, and installation all affect efficiency, comfort, and equipment life. Consult DOE’s residential furnace purchasing guidance for regional criteria and efficiency considerations.
How to choose a system for your home
- Address heat loss. Look for drafts, inadequate insulation, and other weatherization needs. Air sealing and insulation may reduce the amount of heat the home loses.
- Identify the existing distribution system. Note whether the home uses ducts, radiators, or another system, and whether it also needs cooling. This helps narrow down compatible options, including ducted or ductless heat pumps.
- Ask for a home-specific assessment. Have qualified professionals assess the home’s heating load and recommend appropriately sized equipment. Ask how duct condition, layout, and installation details affect the proposal.
- Compare relevant ratings and complete costs. Check climate-appropriate heat-pump criteria or the furnace AFUE and regional ENERGY STAR criteria. Compare complete installed quotes and estimate operating costs using local electricity and fuel rates.
- Check current local details. Verify current ENERGY STAR criteria, utility incentives, and contractor availability before choosing. These vary by location and time.
No single system is established as the lowest-cost choice for every household. A fair comparison uses the same home’s needs, local rates, and complete installation costs—not an efficiency figure in isolation.

Use portable heaters only for limited supplemental heat
A portable electric heater can warm a room, but do not assume it is an efficient whole-home replacement. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises placing heaters on a stable surface, keeping them at least three feet from combustible materials, plugging electric units directly into a wall outlet—not an extension cord or power strip—and turning them off when sleeping.
“Keep portable heaters at least three feet away from drapes, furniture, bedding and other combustible materials to prevent fires.”

The CPSC’s January 23, 2026 release estimates that portable heaters, including electric space heaters, were involved in an average of 1,600 fires per year, with an average of 70 deaths and 150 injuries annually from 2020 to 2022. These are estimates for portable-heater incidents, not a complete safety comparison among heating systems.
In that release, CPSC also recommends smoke alarms on every level and in every bedroom; carbon monoxide alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas; monthly alarm tests; and annual professional inspection of fuel-burning heating systems, fireplaces, chimneys, flues, and vents. Never use an oven or stove to heat a room. See the CPSC’s winter heating safety guidance.
