A HEPA purifier is a category worth considering for particles, but the label alone does not show how much air the unit cleans. Traffic gases and odors require separate consideration: particle CADR does not measure gas removal.
What an air purifier can—and cannot—do about traffic pollution
A portable air cleaner can reduce some airborne particles in the room where it operates. It cannot remove every pollutant, and filtration is not a substitute for reducing pollution sources or bringing in clean outdoor air when conditions allow. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) puts it this way: “The most effective ways to improve your indoor air are to reduce or remove the sources of pollutants and to ventilate with clean outdoor air.” EPA guidance on air cleaners and filters explains these complementary measures.
EPA says people spend about 90% of their time indoors, mostly in homes; it presents this as general exposure context, not a measure of traffic pollution or a purifier’s benefit. Studies of portable HEPA cleaners have found small improvements in some cardiovascular and respiratory health measures, but results are not always noticeable to individuals and do not show improvement in every allergy or asthma symptom. A purifier may reduce particle exposure; it should not be treated as a guarantee of symptom relief or disease prevention. EPA’s discussion of possible health effects describes these limits.
Size a purifier by smoke CADR and room area
Clean air delivery rate (CADR) indicates how quickly a cleaner removes particles from air. For the smallest particles, EPA recommends using the tobacco-smoke CADR as the relevant proxy. Compare that figure with the room’s floor area and ceiling height, rather than relying on a product’s room-size claim by itself.

| Room area | EPA estimated CADR |
|---|---|
| 100 sq. ft. | 65 cfm |
| 200 sq. ft. | 130 cfm |
| 300 sq. ft. | 195 cfm |
| 400 sq. ft. | 260 cfm |
| 500 sq. ft. | 325 cfm |
| 600 sq. ft. | 390 cfm |
These are EPA estimates for rooms with 8-foot ceilings; higher ceilings may call for a higher CADR. The figures are guidance, not guarantees of the same performance in every layout or operating condition. For a larger area, consider whether more than one portable unit is needed. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home provides the sizing estimates.
Match the filter to particles, gases, or both
For particles
HEPA filtration is a reasonable category to investigate for airborne particles, including fine particles associated with traffic. Compare independently reported particle CADR and the settings you expect to use; a HEPA label by itself does not establish the amount of clean air delivered in your room.

For gases and odors
Particle CADR does not tell you whether a purifier removes traffic-related gases. If gas filtration matters, look for a substantial amount of activated carbon or another filter media designed for gases, and evaluate any removal claim for the specific model. EPA notes there is no widely used rating system for portable gas-removal filters, so do not treat a high particle CADR as proof of gas removal. EPA’s health-risk guidance discusses the limits of gas-removal evidence.
Check ozone emissions before buying
Avoid air cleaners that intentionally generate ozone. EPA identifies ozone as a lung irritant and notes that some ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, UV products without adequate coatings, and plasma cleaners may emit it. Check relevant CARB or AHAM listings for devices tested to emit little or no ozone; those listings address emissions, not whether a device has enough particle CADR for your room. See EPA’s guidance on ozone generators sold as air cleaners and the ozone-testing references in its home air-cleaner guide.

Running at maximum wind speed for 24 hours only consumes 0.63 kW·h of electricity
- 𝐐𝐮𝐢𝐞𝐭 𝟐𝟎𝐝𝐁 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐌𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐒𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬: Choose our quiet air purifier for bedroom. Noise is as low as 20dB in sleep mode. Low noise, low speed and no lights make it perfect for a good night's sleep. Even light-sleeping babies or pets can enjoy fresh and clean air on quiet nights
Choose a setting you can live with
Higher fan speed and longer runtime generally mean more air is filtered; lower speeds mean less. A unit’s maximum-speed CADR may therefore overstate what it delivers in everyday use if the loudest setting is uncomfortable. Compare noise, energy use, placement, and intended runtime alongside CADR, and check whether replacement filters are available and compatible. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement schedule: there is no single interval that applies to every purifier, and an overloaded filter does not work well.
Consider HVAC filtration and DIY options
Central HVAC
EPA recommends a MERV 13 filter, or the highest rating the system can accommodate. A filter that the equipment cannot handle may be unsuitable, so check system compatibility and consult an HVAC professional if needed. Central filtration can complement a room purifier when the system supports the filter.

DIY box-fan cleaners
A box-fan filter can be a lower-cost particle-filtration option, but performance depends strongly on design. EPA says commercial cleaners with known CADR are typically preferred. Its DIY air-cleaner guidance explains why construction and design matter.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical comparison checklist
- Match smoke CADR to room area and account for ceilings higher than 8 feet.
- Decide whether you need particle filtration only or also want gas-targeted media; assess those claims separately.
- Confirm the model does not intentionally generate ozone and check relevant low- or no-ozone testing listings.
- Consider the fan speed you will actually use, not only maximum-speed performance.
- Check replacement-filter compatibility, availability, and the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.
- For HVAC filtration, use MERV 13 or the highest rating the system can accommodate.
EPA does not endorse particular brands or models. Without comparable, model-specific testing, it is more useful to apply these criteria than to name a single “best” purifier.
