The best self-priming water pump is the one that can deliver your required flow at the total head of your job, handle the water you are pumping, and connect to your hoses and power source. “Self-priming” does not mean a pump can start with an empty casing or run dry: the casing generally needs an initial charge of liquid, and the model’s manual governs priming and operation.
What self-priming means—and what it does not
A self-priming pump uses liquid retained in its casing to help evacuate air from the suction line. That lets a surface-mounted pump draw water from a source below it after the pump has been primed. STIHL notes that “Most surface pumps require priming before operation” in its petrol water pump buying guide.
Prime the pump as directed in the model’s manual before startup. Do not assume it can prime from a dry casing or tolerate dry running; operating without liquid can damage seals and internal parts. Self-priming designs also include a recirculation and separation path that can add hydraulic losses compared with a plain centrifugal pump. If the pump will sit below the water source and the suction line remains full, compare non-self-priming options as well, using manufacturer performance data for the actual installation.
Calculate the flow and total head your job needs
Start with the work requirement
Estimate how much water must be moved and the time available. Then calculate the total head the pump must overcome. As STIHL explains, this includes suction height, delivery height, pipe length, bends, and friction loss. Add any pressure the discharge application requires, such as a sprinkler system. The route through the pipe matters: a long run or restrictive fittings can reduce delivered flow.

Use the curve, not the headline maximums
Ask for the pump curve and locate the operating point where the required flow and total head meet. Catalog maximum flow and maximum head are endpoint ratings, not proof that a pump supplies its maximum flow at its maximum head. Performance also depends on installation and operating conditions, so use the current documentation for the exact model.
For example, the Pump Products catalog lists the Pro-Source EDP55RV at 134 GPM, 135 feet of head, and 25 feet of suction lift. These are catalog specifications, not independent test results; they do not establish that the pump delivers 134 GPM at 135 feet of head. Check the curve and conditions before deciding whether it fits your duty.

Match pump construction to the water
- Clean water: Confirm the pump is intended for clean-water service and that its materials and seals suit the water and operating conditions.
- Water with debris: Check the manufacturer’s stated solids tolerance and the size of solids the pump can pass. A strainer may help keep larger debris out of the suction line, but it must be suitable for the pump and job.
- Muddy or solids-laden water: Look for a pump specifically designed and rated for this duty. An MBH Pumps booklet from 2009 describes a self-priming centrifugal range for muddy water, sewage, polluted liquids, and construction dewatering. It illustrates that pump types vary by application; it is not evidence of current model availability.
Do not infer chemical compatibility from the label “water pump.” Confirm that the wetted materials and seals are suitable for the particular liquid. Chemical service requires specific compatibility information from the manufacturer.
Choose a drive and setup that work on site
Power source, fuel, and mobility
Gasoline engine-driven pumps can suit remote or mobile work where direct electrical power is unavailable. STIHL identifies farms and remote worksites among petrol-pump use cases. Account for fuel, engine operation, transport, and the location where the pump will run; do not choose by horsepower alone.

Connections and hose routing
Match the pump’s inlet and outlet sizes and connection types to the pipe or hose you plan to use. Check threads, adapters, clamps, connectors, and strainer fit before purchase. The Pump Products catalog lists a 15-foot suction hose kit with a screen and a 25-foot discharge hose kit, but buyers should confirm that the kits fit the exact pump and connection standard.
Serviceability
Before committing to a model, check whether its manual, replacement parts, service support, and warranty are available where the pump will be used. A pump that meets the duty point is not a practical choice if it cannot be maintained on your schedule.

How to assess a cataloged pump example
The Pump Products catalog describes the Pro-Source EDP55RV as a 5-1/2 HP engine-driven, self-priming pump with a 4-cycle PowerPro gasoline engine. It lists a reinforced corrosion-resistant thermoplastic body and diffuser, polymer impeller, and Viton seals. Named applications include water transfer, sprinkler turf irrigation, dewatering, fire protection, agriculture, light commercial, and marine use.
Those catalog details are a starting point, not a recommendation for every job: the catalog does not replace checking current availability, the model’s documentation and curve, or suitability for the water and installation. Confirm the exact model and specifications with the seller or manufacturer before buying.

Buying checklist
- Define the required volume and time window for the job.
- Calculate total head, including suction and delivery elevation, pipe length, bends, friction, and required discharge pressure.
- Find the pump curve and verify that it covers the required flow at that head under your operating conditions.
- Confirm the pump is intended for the water and solids involved, and verify material compatibility for the liquid.
- Check suction-lift limits, priming procedure, initial casing charge, and any restrictions in the current manual.
- Match the drive, fuel or electrical supply, inlet and outlet, hoses, fittings, and strainer to the site.
- Check portability, parts and service access, warranty, and current local availability.
