The right screen or storm door knob depends first on how you want the door to operate and whether it needs a latch. Before buying a replacement, identify the existing hardware’s mounting style, measure its holes, and confirm compatibility with the door model. Once fit is established, compare knob, push-button, lever, and pull-handle designs by use and appearance.

Choose the operation that suits the door

Screen and storm door hardware is not limited to a conventional knob. The main choices are a knob latch, push-button latch, lever, or simple pull handle. A pull handle may not latch at all, so decide whether the door needs to stay closed by its hardware or whether a separate arrangement serves that purpose.

  • Knob latch: A familiar option when you want a knob-style grip and a built-in latch.
  • Push-button latch: Choose this if you prefer push-to-release operation.
  • Lever: Offers a different grip and appearance; check the lever’s handing and installation requirements.
  • Pull handle: A simple grip for opening the door, but some pull handles have no latch.

Retail categories include replacement storm door handlesets and screen-door pull handles without latches. Treat product names as a starting point, not proof that a set fits your door.

Check fit before choosing a finish

Start by identifying whether the existing set is surface-mounted or mortise-style. These mounting types are not interchangeable by default. Then check the door make and model, door thickness, hole spacing and diameters, swing or handing, and the dimensions and included parts specified for the replacement. A broad “universal” label does not replace checking those measurements.

Surface-mount dimensions are product-specific

For the Ideal Security surface-mount sets addressed in its compatibility guidance, the existing holes should be 1 3/4 inches apart, with each of the three holes 5/16 inch in diameter. Those dimensions apply to the sets covered by that guidance; they are not a universal standard for all screen and storm doors.

Some Andersen doors use mortise hardware, which Ideal Security says is not compatible with its surface-mount sets. If you have a brand-specific door, locate its model information and check the manufacturer’s parts resources before ordering.

Confirm the complete set and its parts

When comparing listings, verify that the product includes the parts your repair needs, such as the strike and spindle. If the handle is broken but the rest of the hardware is usable, look for a door-specific replacement part rather than assuming a complete handle set is necessary. Larson provides manufacturer parts resources that can help identify components for its doors.

Compare appearance after compatibility

Once the mounting and measurements match, choose a design that suits the home and the door. A curved handle can complement a more traditional look; a straight handle can read as more modern. Backplate shape and finish also affect the appearance, and a finish can either coordinate with nearby hardware or provide contrast.

Install a replacement with care

Ideal Security’s installation guide, last updated October 9, 2024, describes removing the old handle, adding a backplate if desired, setting lever orientation to the door handing, sizing the spindle, mounting the interior latch, and aligning the strike so it engages the latch.

  • Elegant Upgrade: This stylish door handle with inside locking latch replaces any standard storm or screen door handle set; pair it with a matching keyed deadbolt to enhance curb appeal and security. Both handles are painted on each side for lasting durability.
  • Storm Door and Screen Door Compatibility: Our handle set designs are compatible with most pre-installed surface mount storm and screen door handles. Note: not suitable as replacements for mortise handles.
  • Convenient Design: This lever handle works with any out-swinging storm or screen door. Includes replacement hardware (spindles and screws) for doors 1 to 2-1/8” thick. Fits 1-3/4 screw hole spacing.
  • Locking Interior Latch: For an added layer of security to your storm and screen door, the inside latch features a night latch to lock the door from the inside
  • Package Includes: Outside handle, inside handle, and all installation accessories for a straightforward installation; all components are the same color/finish
  1. Remove the old handle and note how the existing latch and strike are positioned.
  2. If using a new backplate, check the kit instructions before drilling. Ideal Security says a backplate may require a 1/8-inch hole through only the outer door skin when the old setup did not have one.
  3. Orient a lever to match the door handing, if the set uses a lever.
  4. Insert and size the spindle according to the exact kit. Ideal Security specifies that it extend 5/16 inch past the opposite side of the door and not touch the inside latch mechanism. Its guide says an oversized spindle may be shortened if the particular set allows it.
  5. Mount the interior latch, then position the strike so it meets and engages the latch when the door closes.

These are manufacturer instructions, not a guarantee that every kit installs the same way. Follow the instructions supplied with your exact hardware, especially before drilling or cutting a spindle.
