Do not choose from a normal-time map estimate alone. Before leaving, check the responsible transportation agency’s work-zone updates, the region’s 511 service if available, current navigation information, and the signed detour. Compare the entire alternate route—including queues, other construction, events, capacity limits and closure windows—then follow current signs and traffic control when you reach the zone.
Because no origin, destination, departure time or local closure data are specified here, this is general U.S. guidance rather than a recommendation for one particular highway.

Why a normal map route is not enough
A construction zone changes the assumptions behind a route planner. A lane closure can reduce capacity without closing the highway; a full closure can move traffic onto roads that normally carry much less demand; and a detour that works in the morning may be poor later when a new construction stage, crash or event begins. The relevant question is not simply “Which road is shortest?” It is “Which complete route is open, suitable and predictable at the time I will use it?”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFederal Highway Administration (FHWA) work-zone guidance treats advance notice, current traveler information and planned detours as complementary aids. None guarantees that one route will remain the fastest. A signed detour is still important: advance signs give drivers time to choose an alternate, while detour signs direct traffic onto, through and back to the original route.

Use the following process whenever a work zone could affect your trip:
- Establish the current restriction and the time it applies.
- Find the official detour and any local traffic advisories.
- Compare the full signed detour with staying on the highway and with other lawful alternatives.
- Account for vehicle restrictions, road capacity, concurrent work and special events.
- Set navigation before departure, recheck close to leaving and obey the signs you encounter.
Collect current information before you choose
Start with the agency responsible for the road
Look for the state or local transportation department’s construction, work-zone or traveler-information page. Project notices may identify lane restrictions, complete closures, detour maps, expected construction stages, time-of-day limits and the agency’s contact or alert channels. Read the notice for the direction and roadway segment that affect your trip; a closure in one direction does not automatically mean both directions are closed.
Agency information is the appropriate place to confirm a planned closure. It may not capture every incident, so pair it with the region’s current traffic service.
Check 511 and other official traveler information
Many U.S. regions provide a 511 telephone, web or mobile service. FHWA identifies 511 and project-information channels as sources for work-zone and travel-condition information, including closure and detour details where a region supplies them. Coverage and detail vary, so the absence of an alert is not proof that the road is clear. Check the service for the corridor, direction and approximate departure time rather than relying on an old saved result.
Use navigation as a second information layer
Online trip-planning tools and navigation apps can incorporate real-time traffic and suggest alternatives. They are useful for comparing travel times and seeing whether an incident has changed the picture, but an app may lag an official closure notice or route traffic onto a road that is unsuitable for your vehicle. Review the proposed route against agency information and posted signs.
Record the details that affect your decision
Before comparing routes, write down:
- Origin, destination and the highway direction you need.
- Departure time and any hard arrival deadline.
- Vehicle type, dimensions, weight, towing status and any hazardous-load or commercial restrictions that apply.
- Whether you need fuel, charging, rest stops, accessible facilities or a location where a large vehicle can turn around.
- Weather, daylight and road-surface concerns that make a narrow or unfamiliar alternative less suitable.
These details prevent a route that looks efficient on a map from becoming unusable in practice.

Compare the entire route, not just the construction delay
Evaluate each candidate from the point where you would leave the original highway to the point where you rejoin it or reach your destination. Include the approach to the diversion, every connecting road and the return to the planned route. FHWA work-zone planning identifies travel time, queue length and delay as useful measures; a route’s normal distance is only one input.

| Factor | Questions to ask | Why it changes the choice |
|---|---|---|
| Expected total time | What is the current estimate for the queue, detour and remaining trip? Is the estimate based on current conditions or normal traffic? | A short detour can lose its advantage if it begins with a long merge queue or ends at a congested junction. |
| Reliability | Does the route have a single bottleneck, a movable work operation or a history of rapidly changing restrictions? | A slightly longer route with fewer failure points may be preferable when an arrival time matters. |
| Capacity | Can the alternate road absorb traffic leaving the highway? Are there bridges, narrow lanes, low clearances or intersections that limit flow? | FHWA specifically calls alternate-route capacity a planning consideration. A road that is open may still become severely congested when diversion traffic arrives. |
| Other disruptions | Is there another construction project, crash, closure, parade, concert, sports event or weather problem on the alternative? | Separate small delays can compound into a longer delay than the original work zone. |
| Vehicle and trip suitability | Are there weight, height, width, turning, surface, seasonal or access restrictions? Can you make required stops? | A route is not viable if the vehicle cannot legally or safely use it, even when a navigation app offers it. |
| Official instructions | Has the road agency published a specific detour or timing instruction? Do signs direct traffic differently from an app? | The signed and officially announced plan reflects current traffic control and may change as work progresses. |
When staying on the highway is reasonable
Remain on the highway when it is open, the agency has not directed traffic away, and current information shows that the queue and work-zone delay are acceptable for your schedule and vehicle. A lane reduction can be slower than usual without making the route unsuitable. Avoid making a last-second exit merely because an app displays a faster-looking local road; abrupt weaving creates risk and can put you outside the planned traffic-control pattern.
When the signed detour should be your first alternative
Use the signed detour when the highway is closed, when an official notice directs traffic off the route, or when signs and current agency information identify it as the controlled path. Detours are designed to connect the closure point with the original route, and the agency may have coordinated signals or temporary controls along it. A detour is not automatically fastest, but it is generally the route you should follow when traffic control directs you there.
When a different lawful alternative may make sense
An unsiged alternative can be appropriate only after you verify that it is open, legal for your vehicle and able to handle the expected traffic. Consider it when the official detour is already congested, when your destination lies before the detour rejoins the highway, or when an agency notice identifies another route for a particular vehicle class. Do not use residential streets, shoulders or closed roads as shortcuts.
A step-by-step route-selection procedure
1. Define the work-zone condition
Determine whether you face a lane closure, ramp closure, intermittent stoppage or full roadway closure. Note the affected direction, milepoint or interchange, start and end times, and whether the restriction is scheduled or incident-driven. If the notice says conditions are subject to change, treat the timing as provisional.

2. Locate the decision point
Identify the last safe place where you can leave the highway without crossing a closed ramp or entering a queue you cannot escape. Advance signs are intended to give motorists time to choose. If you wait until the barricades, you may have no legal or safe choice except to follow traffic control.

This suction phone cradle obtained CP65 / REACH / RoHS safety certifications
3. Map the signed detour from start to finish
Trace every turn, not only the first leg. Confirm where the detour returns to the original route or reaches your destination. Check whether it uses a bridge, tunnel, ferry, low-clearance structure, unpaved segment or road with restrictions that affect your vehicle. Save the agency’s detour map or directions for reference, but do not handle a phone while moving.
4. Build one or two viable alternatives
Use current navigation information and local road knowledge to identify alternatives that avoid the affected segment. Eliminate any route with a closure, unsuitable vehicle restriction or unverified access. A route that merely avoids the red line on a map is not a candidate until its full length is checked.
5. Compare current total times and bottlenecks
For each remaining route, add the expected queue, diversion travel, intersections and re-entry delay. Look for a single point where diverted traffic could overwhelm capacity. If the service shows only normal travel time, label that estimate as incomplete rather than treating it as a promise.

6. Check for simultaneous problems
Search the alternate corridor for other construction, crashes, special events and weather restrictions. FHWA warns that concurrent projects or events can compound traveler impacts. If two routes are close in time, prefer the one with fewer independent disruptions and more opportunities to turn around or stop safely.
7. Apply vehicle and schedule constraints
Remove any route that is unsuitable for your vehicle, cargo or required stops. For a time-critical trip, compare reliability as well as the fastest estimate. For a flexible trip, a longer route may be acceptable if it avoids a fragile bottleneck and offers clearer, more predictable driving.
8. Choose before entering the decision area
Set the selected route while parked or before departure. Tell passengers the plan so they can monitor information without distracting the driver. If you are already driving, continue safely to a lawful stopping place before changing the route or consulting a device.

Recheck close to departure
Conditions can change between planning and leaving. Recheck the agency notice, 511 service and navigation view shortly before departure, especially for a trip that crosses a major interchange or has a fixed arrival time. FHWA’s alternate-route guidance states: “In planning alternate routes, work zone planners and incident responders should realize that the suitability of selected alternate routes may change over time.” That applies to a route you selected earlier in the day as well as to a long-term project.
Recheck only when it is safe
Do not manipulate a phone in moving traffic. If a passenger is available, have that person check updates. Otherwise pull into a legal parking area or rest area before reviewing a new route. A car phone mount can make directions visible, but it does not make handheld interaction while driving safe or lawful.
Respond to a new closure
If signs announce that your planned route is closed ahead, follow the instructed diversion rather than attempting an improvised U-turn or shoulder maneuver. If the route is merely slower, remain predictable and follow lane-control directions until you reach a safe decision point. Navigation should support, not override, traffic control.

Large, heavy or towing vehicles
Check clearance, weight, width, turning radius and posted restrictions before choosing a local alternative. A detour designed for ordinary passenger vehicles may not accommodate a truck, trailer or bus. Use an agency-designated commercial or heavy-vehicle route when one is published, and allow extra time for turns and merges.
Time-critical travel
For an airport connection, medical appointment, work shift or delivery window, select for reliability rather than the smallest displayed number. Leave enough contingency for a queue that grows after you check. If no route has a dependable estimate, contact the relevant facility or dispatcher and revise the schedule instead of assuming the app’s best case will hold.

Night, weather or unfamiliar roads
Darkness, rain, snow, flooding or poor visibility can make a narrow, winding or poorly lit alternative less suitable than a slower but better-controlled route. Check current conditions and whether the alternative remains open. Never bypass a barricade because the detour appears inconvenient.
Common mistakes and practical fixes
- Using an old screenshot or yesterday’s travel time. Recheck official and current traffic information immediately before departure.
- Comparing only the construction segment. Measure the entire route from your actual origin to destination, including approach and re-entry queues.
- Assuming the signed detour is always fastest. Treat it as authoritative traffic guidance, then assess its current congestion and suitability.
- Assuming an open local road has spare capacity. Look for other work, events and bottlenecks that diverted drivers may also encounter.
- Letting an app send a large vehicle onto an unsuitable road. Verify clearance, weight, width and turning restrictions independently.
- Changing lanes or exits at the last second. Use advance signs and make decisions at a safe, legal point.
- Interacting with a phone while moving. Set the route before leaving, delegate checking to a passenger or stop legally.
- Treating a closure notice as permanent. Construction stages and incident conditions change; confirm the current status each time you travel.
Illustrative decisions
Lane reduction with a stable queue
You find that two lanes remain open, the queue is short and the official notice gives no closure window during your departure. The signed route continues through the work zone. Staying on the highway may be preferable because leaving would add unfamiliar intersections without a demonstrated time benefit. Continue to monitor signs and maintain the required lane position.
Full closure during your departure window
The agency and 511 service report a complete closure and publish a detour. The detour is the default choice. Before leaving, check whether a separate event or project affects its central junctions. If an agency-approved alternate is available and legal for your vehicle, compare its complete current time; do not drive toward the barricade hoping the closure will lift.

What the FHWA figures do—and do not—tell you
FHWA’s Work Zone Intelligent Transportation Systems: Technology Supplement reports that 98 percent of studied agencies were included in a 2021 survey of transportation-department maintenance leaders. The same supplement reports a study-specific finding that 40 percent of drivers identified real-time information as the most highly sought-after type used in trip decisions. These are reported study figures, not universal current estimates for every driver or agency. They support using timely information, but they do not identify a particular route or guarantee an accurate travel-time prediction.
Final pre-departure checklist
- Confirm the work-zone location, direction and restriction type.
- Read the current state or local transportation-agency notice.
- Check the region’s 511 service, if available.
- Find the official signed detour and trace its full path.
- Check navigation for current queues, crashes and alternate travel times.
- Look for concurrent construction, closures, events and weather problems.
- Verify vehicle, cargo, clearance, weight and turning suitability.
- Choose for total time and reliability, not distance alone.
- Set the route before moving and identify a safe place to stop if conditions change.
- Follow temporary signs, flaggers, signals and other traffic control over an app’s earlier instruction.
When information conflicts, use the current on-road signs and lawful traffic-control instructions, then verify updates from the responsible transportation agency when you can safely stop. That combination—official information, whole-route comparison and disciplined driving—gives you the best chance of avoiding a construction-zone surprise.
