How to Choose a Reliable Detour When a River Crossing Is Closed

A reliable detour must be officially open, suitable for your vehicle, and safe along its full length. Learn what to check before setting out—or when to wait.

Choose a detour only if the responsible road authority confirms it is open, it suits your vehicle, and conditions along the whole route are safe. Follow the signed or officially announced alternative, check every road on it for fresh closures and hazards, and delay travel if the route is uncertain or deteriorating. Never drive through floodwater or past a closure.

Why a river crossing closure is a hard stop

A road that looks passable is not necessarily safe or open. Floodwater can sweep vehicles away, while flooding can damage bridges and roads beside rivers. Even after water recedes, a road may remain unsafe; Queensland Government guidance says, “Even if the floodwater has subsided, the road may not to be safe to use.” A temporary road-closed sign means the road is closed to traffic. Follow the barrier and local rules rather than trying to assess the crossing yourself. Queensland Government flood road guidance explains the sign advice; check your own jurisdiction’s rules.

The UK Department for Transport and Met Office also warn that fast-flowing floodwater can sweep vehicles away and that flooding can damage bridges and routes close to rivers. UK flooding and transport guidance

How to evaluate a detour

Confirm the route is officially open

Start with the transport agency or road authority responsible for the area. Check its latest closure notice, live road-condition service, or traffic bulletin, and use the signed or designated detour. A route may change as crews reassess conditions, so an old notice or map route is not confirmation that it remains available. Police or emergency-service notices may also communicate closures; obey signs and barriers at the road.

Check for hazards beyond the closed crossing

Assess the entire alternate route, not just the bridge or ford you are avoiding. Look for flooding, surface water, slips, snow or ice, high winds, other closures, and restrictions. A detour can run through the same weather system or another vulnerable river corridor.

That risk is not theoretical: in a 7 July 2026 South Island flooding bulletin, New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi said an inland route around SH1 would take much longer and could itself face closures or delays from flooding or slips. The agency encouraged people to consider delaying until the weather passed and crews could reassess in daylight. This was advice for that dated incident, not a current route recommendation. Make sure the road fits your vehicle

Check restrictions and road suitability for your vehicle’s weight, height, width, and towing status. A route workable for a passenger car may be unsuitable for a heavy truck, oversized load, high-sided vehicle, or vehicle towing a trailer. Local roads used as unofficial shortcuts may not be appropriate for displaced through traffic. Ottawa describes its emergency-detour design as a way to guide unfamiliar drivers and avoid sending heavy trucks onto unsuitable streets. City of Ottawa emergency detours

Weigh travel time against uncertainty

Compare the added time with the possibility of more delays or another closure. A longer route is not automatically more reliable if it crosses flood-prone roads or passes through an area where conditions are worsening. If the route is officially open but its status or safety is uncertain, waiting for an update may be the better choice.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Verify the closure. Check the responsible road authority’s current notice, an official police or emergency notice, or posted closure signs. Do not approach a barrier to investigate.
  2. Find the designated alternative. Use the signed or officially announced detour, then check the authority’s current road-status service for each major road on it.
  3. Check conditions along the route. Look for flooding, surface water, slips, snow or ice, wind, restrictions, and other closures that could affect any segment.
  4. Confirm vehicle suitability. Check applicable weight, height, width, towing, and road-class restrictions. Do not assume an alternative intended for cars is suitable for a truck or high-sided vehicle.
  5. Decide whether to go now. If conditions are worsening, the alternate route may also close, or its status is unclear, delay travel or use another officially confirmed route.
  6. Recheck before departure and at safe stops. Conditions can change during a long detour. Stop safely before using a phone or checking updates; do not use one while driving.

When waiting is the reliable choice

Delay travel if every available route is threatened, authorities have not confirmed an alternative, or conditions are deteriorating faster than updates can establish what is safe. Recheck official information after crews have had a chance to assess the roads. No universal extra-time threshold or route reliability score can determine the choice without knowing the location, vehicle, and current conditions.
