Choose a plastic food strainer by matching its openings to the food, its capacity to your usual batch, and its handling and cleaning features to your kitchen. A perforated colander is suited to draining larger foods such as pasta; a fine-mesh strainer is the better fit when small grains or finer particles might pass through larger holes. There is no evidence here for a hands-on ranking, so the options below are matched to documented specifications and common kitchen needs.
Colander or fine-mesh strainer: which type do you need?
These tools are not interchangeable. A colander has larger perforations and is designed to drain foods that will not slip through them. A fine-mesh strainer has a finer opening pattern for smaller ingredients and finer filtration. Match the openings to the food rather than choosing by the word “strainer” on a listing. The comparison source explains these use differences but does not report hands-on testing: comparison source.
- Pasta and other larger foods: A perforated colander is the natural choice for draining pieces that are larger than its openings.
- Rice, quinoa, and smaller ingredients: Check the opening size carefully. If grains could escape through a colander’s holes, choose a fine-mesh strainer instead.
- Fine filtration: Use fine mesh when the task requires catching small particles that a perforated colander would let through.
What to check before buying
Capacity and batch size
Choose a bowl size that can accommodate your usual quantity without making draining awkward. A compact model may suit a small household or limited storage, while larger batches call for more capacity. Check the stated dimensions and capacity on the individual listing; the sources do not establish a single ideal size.
Stability and handling
Look for a shape and support that let you hold the strainer securely or rest it over a sink or bowl. The comparison source identifies stability and handling as selection criteria, but does not establish that any one listed product is more stable in use.

Storage footprint
Consider where the strainer will live between uses. Compare its dimensions with your cabinet or drawer space, and check whether its shape can nest or stack with your other kitchenware if that matters to you.
Cleaning directions
Follow the care instructions for the exact product. Do not assume a plastic strainer is dishwasher-safe if the manufacturer does not say so. For example, Brabantia specifies top-rack dishwasher cleaning for its Tasty+ Salad Spinner; that direction applies to that product, not to plastic strainers generally: Brabantia Tasty+ Salad Spinner.

Material and food-contact information
Treat material, BPA-free, temperature-range, and food-contact statements as product-specific. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the item you are considering rather than applying one product’s claims to an entire category.
