No single frame, suspension, cushion fill, or color is right for everyone: the useful test is whether the sofa suits your posture, care habits, household, and space.
Start with fit: room, route, and circulation
Measure the sofa’s full footprint and the path it must travel before you shop. A couch can fit the room on paper and still be impossible to bring through a doorway, turn in a hallway, or place without obstructing movement.
- Measure the intended location, including the sofa’s width, depth, and height, and account for nearby tables, doors, windows, and fixed features.
- Measure doorways, hallways, turns, and other narrow points on the delivery route. Check the product’s delivery dimensions and whether the legs or other parts can be removed.
- Mark the footprint on the floor with painter’s tape or a similar marker. Check that people can still move around the sofa and reach adjacent furniture comfortably.
Which? recommends measuring both the living room and the route into it in its sofa buying guide. If buying online, confirm the retailer’s delivery requirements and return policy before ordering; product dimensions alone do not establish that delivery will work.
Check the seat proportions against how you sit
Overall dimensions do not tell you whether a couch will feel comfortable. Seat depth, seat height, back angle, and arm height work together to shape your posture. Compare these measurements with a sofa you already find comfortable, and consider whether you mostly sit upright, lounge, or share the couch with people who prefer different positions.

Ethan Allen lists seat depths from 19 to 26 inches across its living-room furniture. That range illustrates how much proportions can vary; it is not an industry standard or a recommendation for every person.
Deep, soft seats may suit lounging, but can be difficult to rise from, especially for someone with mobility issues. Which? sofa and home improvement expert Hannah Healey notes that a deep, soft sofa “can be very difficult to get up from.” If standing up easily matters, pay particular attention to seat height and depth, and try the sofa in person if possible.

Ask how the frame and seat foundation are built
A couch’s construction is a system, not a single feature. Ask what the frame is made of, how it is joined, how the corners are reinforced, and how the legs are secured. Check whether the seat foundation is supported and ask what type of suspension is used.
The Washington Post’s guide to buying a couch identifies reinforced corners, securely attached legs, and seat foundations as useful things to investigate. It gives eight-way hand-tied springs and sinuous springs as examples of foundations to ask about—not proof that one system is automatically better.

Interiors expert Alex Dauley advises, “Look for strength, good construction, and stability.” She also cautions against judging a sofa by one suspension feature alone: “I’m less interested in saying one system is universally better than another and more interested in how the whole sofa has been engineered to work together.” Ask how the parts work together rather than treating a premium-sounding specification as a guarantee of quality or lifespan.
Choose cushion fill by feel and upkeep
Cushion fill affects how a sofa feels and how much routine care it needs. Which? describes foam, feather, fiber, and blends as common options. Try the exact sofa, if possible, and consider whether you will keep up with the plumping or turning its cushions require.

There is no universally most comfortable fill. A softer cushion may feel inviting but need more fluffing; a firmer one may hold its shape better after use. The right trade-off depends on your preferred feel, posture, and willingness to maintain the cushions.

Think about who and what will use the couch: children, pets, sunlight, frequent entertaining, or everyday lounging. Check the manufacturer’s care instructions and ask how stains should be treated before choosing a fabric. Which? recommends prioritizing durability for homes with children or pets and names microfiber, polyester, and olefin among durable synthetic options.

Do not assume faux leather will avoid wear. In Which?’s 2025 survey of sofa owners, 57% of faux-leather sofa owners said their sofa had been damaged within 10 years of purchase. That is a reported survey result, not a universal failure rate for every faux-leather couch.
Choose a color for the room and the reality of marks
Use the room’s fixed elements—such as flooring, wall color, and built-ins—as the starting palette. A neutral couch can be layered with cushions and throws as tastes change, but light or plain upholstery may make stains and marks more visible. A saturated color can make the couch a focal point; a pattern can connect colors already in the room and disguise everyday marks.
Chess Darby, co-founder and designer at Darby Holmes, says, “Neutral sofas always feel timeless and can be layered with lots of other shades and textures in cushions and throws.” She also points out that neutrals “do tend to show stains and marks more easily — especially if you’ve got pets and children.” Treat color as both an aesthetic choice and a maintenance decision: consider how often you want to change accessories and how noticeable ordinary wear will be. Compare your shortlist on the same terms
When two or more couches look promising, compare their specifications and policies side by side rather than relying on appearance alone.

If you cannot try a sofa in person, reduce uncertainty by checking detailed dimensions, asking for the seat measurements and material specifications, reviewing care guidance, and confirming the return terms.
