The examples below are manufacturer-listed models, not independently tested or ranked winners.
What makes a range hood chimney-style?
A chimney-style hood mounts on the wall above a range or cooktop. Its visible chimney section covers the ductwork, making it a natural option for a range wall without an upper cabinet. Because the hood is a prominent feature, consider its finish and shape alongside how its chimney extension will meet the ceiling and surrounding wall treatment. What size range hood do I need?
As a starting point, choose a hood at least as wide as the cooking surface where possible. Broan-NuTone’s suggested width ranges are screening guidance, not a substitute for checking the exact product dimensions or installation instructions.

How high should a wall-mount range hood be installed?
Broan-NuTone gives 24–30 inches above the cooktop as a typical wall-mount chimney-hood range. Use that only as an initial reference: the exact hood’s installation manual specifies its permitted mounting clearance, and local requirements may also apply. Mounting too high or too low can affect capture and usability, so confirm the required height before finalizing the design.
How much CFM do I need?
CFM means cubic feet per minute and describes the volume of air a fan moves. Broan-NuTone offers an approximate sizing rule of 100 CFM per 10,000 BTU of cooking power; its example pairs 40,000 BTU with 400 CFM. The guide notes that local code may require make-up air above 400 CFM, but requirements depend on the jurisdiction and system. Confirm applicable rules with the local building department or a qualified installer rather than treating that threshold as universal.

That rule is not a complete performance verdict. ROCIS’s December 2019 recommendations give 200–350 CFM as a typical-home range and recommend capture efficiency (CE) of 80% or more when a rating is available. These are dated recommendations, not code requirements or a universal formula. They sit alongside—not in place of—the manufacturer’s BTU-based guidance. ROCIS also recommends an HVI noise rating below 3 sones at 200 CFM or more when possible. See its December 2019 ducted-range recommendations.
Frequent frying or searing, wok cooking, and professional-style gas cooking can call for more ventilation. Actual capture also depends on hood geometry, mounting height, duct path, and installation. Compare airflow, capture information, and noise at equivalent fan settings where possible; maximum CFM alone does not establish how well a hood will perform in your kitchen. ROCIS cautions that manufacturer-reported figures may not be comparable and points readers toward third-party certified airflow and noise data.

Is a ducted range hood better than a ductless model?
They address different installation conditions. A ducted hood exhausts air outdoors and is a strong option for frequent cooking, gas or high-heat cooking, and households prioritizing ventilation. A recirculating hood filters air through grease and charcoal filters, then returns it to the room. It can work where exterior ducting is not available, but it does not exhaust air outdoors and its charcoal filters need periodic replacement. A convertible hood may require a separately purchased recirculation kit; check the exact SKU and included accessories before ordering. The listed airflow and noise figures are not directly comparable unless their measurement basis and fan settings match. The product information cited here does not establish equivalent test conditions, capture efficiency, lighting details, filter-cleaning schedules, or complete installation requirements for both models.
What to confirm before purchase or installation
- Dimensions and clearance: Verify canopy width, depth, mounting height, and the exact model’s required clearance.
- Ceiling and chimney fit: Check ceiling height and the hood’s chimney-extension range.
- Duct route: Confirm outlet direction, duct diameter, and whether the planned route can be short and straight; Broan-NuTone notes that shorter, straighter duct runs generally improve airflow.
- Electrical and structure: Check electrical access and whether the wall can support the installation.
- Configuration and accessories: Establish whether the hood will be ducted or recirculating and whether a conversion kit, charcoal filters, or duct accessories must be purchased separately.
- Upkeep and warranty: Confirm replacement-filter availability, cleaning instructions, and warranty terms for the exact model.
- Local requirements: Check applicable code, including any make-up-air requirement, with the relevant local authority or a qualified professional.
